As the person was there and behind the camera I can assure you that this market is, in fact, a pet market. The Chinese market for Pets has exploded in recent years. Yes, the Chinese do eat animals and animal parts that we in the west do not but I think that says more about our inconsistancy than theirs - cow is OK but donkey and horse are not? Regardless, these creatures were being sold as pets, with the correponding price premium, and I saw no indications otherwise.

Years ago was a series called China Beach about army nurses in Vietnam. Newbie nurse was in what she thought was a pet shop in Saigon market. She fell in love with a puppy. i went to egypt and there was exactly the same thing going on... i bought all 26 turtles from the street and took them to the hotel and they were put in a beutiful pond with other turtles....there's another 26 turtle lives saved!! ;)
