  • Proud Pentecostal here! :)

  • Being a Unitarian Universalist makes these problems much simpler.

  • As of now, im atheist-but i respect everyone elses religon.

  • I hate it when theologically misguided "christians" give the true Bible following ones a bad name. I don't think I'm perfect, and I am NO better than anyone else. The Bible says that all have fallen short. I know I'm messed up which is exactly why I need Jesus. Love God, love people. Relationship with the living God, not religion.

  • Dancing to corn dogs in the background! LOL

  • I was raised baptist since I was a baby. In my early teens I went through an agnostic/atheist stage. I felt sort of hopeless. I wanted to believe in god, not some book the church threw in my face. A book that could have easily been rewritten and mis-translated over the years. I don't believe in the bible. My god is exactly what I want to believe in. Some people may think I'm stupid but it works for me.

  • The VB are very very good at avoiding questions. Discussing how difficult religion, belief, and God are to define is interesting, but not an answer. Yes, there are many questions and opinions that are more important that whether you believe in God or what religion you belong to. My question is not either of those, but: What (if anything) do you believe in?

  • @zach6670 I don't think it nulls his previous statements; Obama is not Muslim for 1) not following the five pillars and 2) for not BEGINNING to believe or think that this is something that he should be doing in order to fulfill his duty as a Muslim-- which he clearly is not. Accepting that these are certain rules to follow in the first place is what separates the not-Muslims and people who claim to be Muslim but are, technically, not.

  • i believe in god but not religion if you are in any denomination of christian then watch "why i hate religion, but love Jesus"

  • @vlogbrothers In a previous video, you stated that President Barack Obama wasn't Muslim because he didn't follow the 5 Pillars. In this video, you state that not all Muslims follow these 5 Pillars. So, does that null out your previous argument on why President Obama isn't a Muslim?

To clarify, I am not saying President Obama is Muslim, I am just asking if that nulls out your previous reasoning towards the argument.

  • @zach6670 personalty i dont know why people even care about religious views when someone is running for president i mean the greatest boxer of all time was Muslim. i dont know why someones belief on god or gods is immediately a model for how someones personality is, especially on the internet its either your a idiot for believing in god or your evil for not or in some cases "all muslims and/or jews are terrorists or everything Cartman says. dont get me wrong here you said your not saying he is 1

  • I spent most of this video being confused as to why Buddhists disagree with Nirvana, as I thought Nirvana were a band. Apparently I am wrong. Who knew? (Or maybe Buddhists just don't like that kind of music?)

  • @phaabpheebz197 To put it simply, Nirvana is like the Buddhist equivilant of heaven, I guess. I'm sure there is someone much more educated about this than I am. I suggest consulting your local library. Many answers are to be found in those temples of knowledge!

  • @Thisismyusername1010 Nirvana is a heaven like place that Hindus and Buddhists believe in. After many reincarnations, if your achieve total enlightenment, you stop reincarnating and go to Nirvana and live happily ever after :)

  • @Thisismyusername1010 Or google it :P

  • @MidPOPO Well, yeah, you COULD do that, but when you look something up on the internet, you either find exactly the information that you're looking for, or none at all. This process greatly decreases the amount of extra information about that particular topic that would otherwise be gleaned from reading a book. Therefore, the library wins.

  • cool. now your thoughts on abortion.

  • The fundamental problem is not that there are (various) Christians, Mormons, Muslims, and whatever, but the fact that the belief systems they uphold divide people based on the imagined. And at the same time they glorify ancient books and moral guidelines that are always prone to give birth to more divisions, accompanied by a chance for a glorification of martyrdom, due to a reward waiting in the speculated afterlife they uphold. This is,in a nutshell, why there need to be a discourse on religion.

  • I am disappointed in the amount of people who say their respect for the vlogbrothers has been lowered due to the mere possibility they may hold a religious faith. Yes, some Christians have burnt witches at the stake. History has shown that atheists are capable of genocide (Stalin and his gulags for example). Just because a few people who subscribe to that school of thought have behaved badly does not justify the slating of everyone else who may also be Christian, atheist, Jewish, Muslim, etc.

  • @BringBRToTheUK No, Hank's an atheist, John is a Christian.

  • Hank's a christian? Respect lowered.

  • ouch!

  • "my fellow Christians" My heart = slightly broken. I thought you were non-religious.

  • @artemisrain After saying that, you should watch the previous video.

  • i got my beliefs and everyone else gots theirs. lets all hug and dance!

  • Caramelldansen John and Hank? Wow, everything exists on the internet.

  • You guys are great and I highly respect your ability to deliver knowledge and concepts in easily digestible yet robust helpings. My next point is in no way a commentary on your, his, or anyone else's beliefs: I can't help but notice that John has a speaking mannerism and tone that is uncannily similar to the pastor Rob Bell. I regularly attended his church growing up, and it's wild how similar you sound. That is strictly complimentary, for the record; you're both excellent orators.

  • My roommate just walked in and asked if the guy in the video was John Green. #win.

  • Thank you. Every time people ask me this question, I simply say 'religiously confused,' because the actual answer is 'sorta kinda christian, but not really' and the proper answer is too long to put in a youtube comment. but this video made me feel better about it.

  • You talk way too fast.

  • you forgot hinduism...

  • CARAMEL DANSEN

  • CARAMEL DANSEN!!!!!!

  • Many people call me crazy but honestly, I believe all religions come down to the same, basic, core principal. Love others, love yourself, be kind to all, respect all and to leave this world a better place than when you arrived. And that is how I live my life.

  • @prettywoman94 Is that why they say homosexuals will burn in hell?

  • Comment removed

  • @BringBRToTheUK What do you mean?

  • @prettywoman94 Please name every religion that has every existed.

  • @theelephanttaco I can't. I know major religions but not every religion that has ever existed. Why do you want me to name them all?

  • @prettywoman94 You deleted your comment, but it said something along the lines of in my opinion every religion is about.....

  • @theelephanttaco Oh, i said that i believe that the at the core of all religions (excluding cults) are the same, basic principals. Those are to love others, love yourself, be kind to all, respect all and to leave this world a better place than when you arrived. And many people call me crazy for thinking like that, but when I look at all religions, that's what I see.

  • Caramelldansen immediately started playing in my head and now I can't make it stop...

  • are u christian

  • It disturbs me that the adverts for both of the vlogbrother religion videos i have watched are those for scientology....

  • @littlelostnell but also AWESOME! Because I find Scientology (which is one of the worlds youngest religions, with it being founded in the 1950's) absolutely fascinating. Because it costs a follower an average of tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year! Personally, if I have to buy forgiveness or acceptance, it probably isn't worth it.

  • Blarghhhhhh.

I know what I said was controversial.

I was still trying to figure things out.

I haven't read any replies to my comment because I don't want to know, and I don't think I even meant it.

SO STOP REPLYING TO IT ALREADY FOR FUCK'S SAKE I DON'T WANT TO KNOW.

  • @MissiCupcake553 I know how you feel, especially since I have been to a two week summer college program and a church that hit you upside the head with their conservative agenda. (If fact the concussion is permanent.) I believe if a church has an agenda other than to 'love thy neighbour', I don't want to be involved or associated with it. (And that's also the reason why I have no political affiliation. And a few other reasons as well.)

  • I call myself a Unitarian Universalist with Humanist ideals. Therefore, I can believe in what I want and don't subject myself to others scrutiny.

If I take from all major religions what I deem important (morals), and take from those points and create a version of a good life that transcends all religions...

Would God really be so spiteful as to say, "Hey you've been good, but not good enough to pray to me specifically. I'm sending you to Hell, Diyu, or I'm keeping you in gehinom or jahannam."

  • (continuation) But this hasn't been easy for me. Sometimes I fear that I'm wrong about everything, that God is angry with me for being some sort of hypoctrical heathen, and that I'll end up going to Hell. Then again, I don't believe in Hell or that God would let me, a good person, go to Hell for not believing in Jesus. But I could be wrong. That's what kills me everyday, that I could be wrong and I'll never know if I'm really on the right path. Unfortunately, this is the only path I can take.

  • Why does the belief in a creator have to be tied to any religion. I grew up as a Christian, and now I have come to disagree with most of what religion says. It simply doesn't make sense anymore. But I still believe in God. I still very much believe in God. I think now God seems more beautiful to me than he did before. I'm don't wish that I was never Christian, because it taught me a lot. I just don't like being forced into thinking and feeling a cerain way. I can't make myself think that way.

  • It's almoust like every individual has their own idea of god and their own seperate religion along with it.

  • OMG I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THE DANCING

    dance, dance, dancey dance

  • @chexmixultimate CARAMELL DANSEN

  • @Missicupcake553 I don't think Hell is a never ending burning abyss of torture, but more like spending eternity compleletly seperated from God, which would be kind of like torture, because through our lives he's always right there with us

  • @Xair1926 I understand what you are saying and I mostly agree but please remember that nothing can exist without God, and while we are separated from God's grace in hell we are not fully separated from him I do not think. The only part of God seen in hell however is his wrath and judgement.

  • the only religion I would be able to believe in/practice would be Jedi.

  • You all need to watch the why i love jesus but hate religion video.

  • Dance... Dance... Dance... Dance...

  • @ThatOneAtheist

    Okay, I sounded stupid there.

I DO believe in the Bible. There are just some stories in the Bible that don't seem all that truthful to me, that people have said have been rewritten over time so the stories seem misleading.

If these few stories have been rewritten so much by seriously biased Christians, maybe they've changed over time?

Not all of the stories, but a few.

I don't want to argue about this, let's just leave it at that.

  • @MissiCupcake553 I don't mean to intrude in your arguement, but if you realize that "some" stories in the Bible my have been "rewritten", what makes you think that any part of the bible is reliable?

  • @MissiCupcake553 this is a long debated topic that scholars have found evidence in and, yet, no one seems to want to agree on this. it's best not to worry yourself too much. it's unlikely that this will be resolved any time soon, if at all. there is evidence to support your claim and i think you're about right on this but you must know that not everyone will agree with you.

  • Do good, be good, live your life to the potential you seek, and you will be rewarded in an eventuality (not necessarily in an afterlife). Religion never appealed to me because all of them have lost sight of their original beliefs and seem to only exist to make people feel comfy in their own boxes, so I put myself in the "spiritual" box for the nosy-nosies who feel that categorizing yourself is the best way to understanding yourself.

  • anyone know what that dance is originally from?

please tell me i'm not alone.

  • @rainydayz247 The Carameldansen

  • Thank you for pulling out the Pentacostal church on that one lol Made my day

  • feh. there are three kinds of gods, first there are the kid gods (zeus, odin, ra) that are so easy to prove wrong a kid can do it, then there is the teen gods, gods so easy to prove wrong a teen could do it (the abrahamic gods), then there are the adult gods, evolved forms of the latter, which are basically just unfalsifiable hypothesis, and might even be easier to disprove then the kid gods. you cant prove god exists anymore then i can prove there is a mini dragon sitting on my shoulder. DUH.

  • I like cake.

  • Why are you and Hank caramelldansen?

  • Which I why I kind of take little things from each religion (practices) that I agree on and mush them all together to make my own sort of "religious" path for my life, which in truth is more like a set of morals taken from people much wiser and older than myself. Then I debate and think about all of the unicorn and mystical beings stuff as ideas and thoughts, which personally I think is how we should view religion (as ideas and thoughts). Which creates my view on religion..?(yes I said Unicorns)

  • In the area where I live, cultural diversity is determined by if you are Lutheran, Methodist, or Presbyterian, but two of my best friends are a Jew and a Wiccan. We love cracking jokes about how they ought to show up at an FCA (fellowship of Christian athletes) meeting and see what happens!

  • Don't believe in a God. Believe in yourself.

  • I love your discussions on religion!

  • ok all religion is is a belief made up centuries ago by people who wanted to explain the things they didnt understand about the universe

  • awesome hank and john doing the caramelldansen dance ^u^

  • surely you need to define the word "awesome" if you are going to remember to be it

  • I have to show my dad these videos that you've done in your religion week as we've been having this conversation for a while now. He wants me to read the book that defines his beliefs (Zhuan Falun is the title for the practitioners of Falun Gong if anyone is interested). I know a lot of his fellow practitioners and they are great people but I haven't read the bible because my mum and brother are christians so don't think it's fair.

Is it wrong not to want to stick myself to a belief?

  • @scififreak1992 Absolutely not. In fact one of the reasons I had so much dought growing up and eventually became an atheist is because of the fact that their are so many religions. Just the fact that every one had a different god had always clued me in that no one really knew what they were talking about but somehow everyone else wrong. My arguements and education on the subject has evolved and become much more advanced but just wanted to share my similar story with you.

  • I love most of the videos you post, but this one is awesome. Partly the way the subject is approached but also the caramelldansen :D

  • remember that one time when my world religions teacher showed this video during class, and me and the other nerdfighter in the class got really excited and everyone else was like, what the hell.... any ways, nerdfighter teacher FTW!

  • HE SAID MY NAME!!!....

  • CARMALLDANSEN!

  • Destroys the LIKE button!

  • As amazing that this video is, I just have one thing to say: Caramelldansen!!

  • Once i so the movie of gladiator life dont seems to matter no matter who die and a hiden hope that grow within the arena and that is the negative are gaining strenght towards the positive hope of a new beginning just as one magnet can pull in others to fallow the positive or negative. Just as the bible said there is a devil and angel. Time is the dust within us all.

  • Did you know that all thing is like a tree the way that all thing grow, spread just as creature blood bain grows within the body just as crystal grow within the earth just as supernova spread its dust so in time the small dust will become strong enough to build a new paradise but only now and then life is always just one step towards negative or positive.

  • Christ visiting America. I believe that's a reference to the Mormon faith (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, technically, but Mormon is way easier to say). Still, despite being part of that faith, I do agree that I have more in common with other religious opinions (if there's such a thing) than some of my fellow Mormons. Well put, sirs.

  • @simsxD I'm not sure. How do you speak proper English?

  • I dont know if you caught it but he said what he believes in... but I am not going to say what it is.

  • ok so im showing mom these videos and this is what she thinks

please feel free to destroy all her religious arguments i could use a laugh John 3:5 Jesus answered: I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. I do like your nice book shelves.

  • It bothers me that John now knows the existance of that dancing gif. I've seen it too many times and now it's been done to the Vlogbros.

  • Umm. Is anyone going to point out that John and Hank both have very feminine bodies in that cartoon?

  • @SlytherinOreo Effeminancy is required when Carameldansen.

  • @SlytherinOreo its caramel dansen. All the cartoons like that they make people have very feminine bodies.

  • @SlytherinOreo Someone took a pre-existing carmalleldansen (sic) dance and photoshopped in the Vlogbrotherness, so yeah XDD

  • I am a Catholic.

But I don't believe what the Bible says about God because how do the people who have written that know exactly what God is like?

Also, I don't believe in Hell.

Why would God damn someone to a never ending burning abyss of torture?

He wouldn't hurt any of his people, and I have confidence in that.

Also, I find nothing wrong with homosexuality, atheism, etc.

(My best friend is an Atheist. So.)

  • @MissiCupcake553

    "I am a Catholic."

"I don't believe in the Bible."

    ...then you're not a christian.

  • @ThatOneAtheist not true at all. John, like myself, is a cchristian and don't believe the bible is "divinely inspired". Read some John Shelby Spong. The bible still has tremendous importance theologically within communities. By your comment I can tell you completely missed the point of this video!

  • @MissiCupcake553 I am an atheist and I respect people like you who respect other people's sexual orientation and beliefs because that's what's important, not religion.

  • @MissiCupcake553 I am proud of you. You stand up for what YOU believe. I think you should stop calling your self a Catholic, instead call yourself a theist.

  • @MissiCupcake553 then the question is simply how much of the bible can you ignore and still be a catholic?

and what's the point in believing in god anyway?

  • @4LackOfaBetterNam3 I believe the point he/she is making is that at the end of the day it should matter what is in your heart, as opposed to what you believe in Scripture or what you practice or follow.

As to what's the point in believing in God, that's much too long a debate really.

  • @Gwarthie no, it should matter what the objective truth on the matter is, not what is in your heart.

  • @MissiCupcake553 same, i think hell could still be a thing though......it kinda sucks if it where true but, i donno. anyways, yeah as christians we dont have the right to discriminate people (gays, atheists..etc.) as jesus said one of his most important rules is to treat their neighbor as you would treat yourself. so basically i wanted to say thanks for not being a steriotype because christians sometimes make themselves look bad to other people, and thats really discouraging

  • Comment removed

  • @MissiCupcake553 i agree with supergiraffeelphant aren't you just ignoring what the bible is stating to you and substituting your own ideas in their place? what is the point in you believing in god then?

  • @jess3336677 Why does the belief in God have to be tied to the Bible or any religion for that matter? There are many, many people who are theists but have no religion nor subscribe to any particular religious work.

  • @jess3336677

not necessarily. The bible is old, and has probably changed a lot from what it originally was. You need to discern for yourself what is true or false.

  • I believe what the Bible says about God, because I believe that God revealed Himself to the authors in various forms (prophecy, personal experience, etc.)

I believe that hell is merely experiencing God's creation without God's protection.

God doesn't choose to damn those people, but rather those people choose not to accept God's gift of love.

I find that Christians are frequently worse people than atheists. We should all be on the same decreasing-world-suck team.

  • @Preds7thMan You are very right indeed :D

  • @Preds7thMan *sigh* Just, just no.

  • @MissiCupcake553 So why are you Catholic? If so much of the bible is incorrect why hold on to any of it? What makes the Bible credable(sp) at all? :-) Sorry. I just don't understand.

  • @MissiCupcake553 If god exists then you are going to hell for thinking that way...thank jebus that is all man made

  • Comment removed

  • @MissiCupcake553

Many people share the thought you have, but I would just like to question it in hopes that you would think and pray about what i have to say because I say this with gentleness and respect for you. I am a Christian and I believe that Jesus had to come to earth as fully man and fully God and live a perfect life and die for me so that I may accept and worship Him in heaven when I die. I also believe the Bible is 100% accurate because of several reasons I would love to give you!

  • @MissiCupcake553

Exactly. Why would got send people to hell for not believing in Jesus? Why would God create humans to worship him? That just sounds arrogant to me.

And nothing is wrong with homosexuality. It's happens. It's natural.

  • @MissiCupcake553 Don't listen to all of the people responding to you negatively, they're just mad that you don't believe what they do. And I see what you're saying, you classify yourself as Christan but who have formed your own beliefs off of that, most people do that, in fact if you ask people little known beliefs from the bible without telling them it's from the bible, most will probably disagree, so that's the same thing as your beliefs, so commenters shouldn't be mean :)

  • Awesome video, but a quick note: it's KEEPING kosher, not PRACTICING kosher. Speaking as a Jew who is asked constantly whether she is kosher and is forced to reply that, according to Kashrut, humans are not edible, I felt obligated to mention that.

  • be a man, say what you believe.

  • wow. I love watching vlogbrothers videos and they relate so much to my current problems or discussions in latin class, and i feel like someone who cares and is very intelligiable is telling me deep and meaningful truths and nontruths and i just love nerdfightaria <3

  • A joke I heard from a Presbyterian reverend: "There is a town in the Highlands that has three chuches but is populated by two old ladies and a three-legged dog. Visitors often remark on how religious they must be, but the old ladies answer that they just love to argue."

  • Personally I believe that there are so many schisms, not because the central idea of Christian faith is bad, but because it is inherent to human nature to argue and quibble over every little detail.

You mentioned Paul the apostle who constantly tried his best to stop congregations from branching of. This was in a time that Christianity was a new religion and was being persecuted left right and center. If it happend way back then, it should be no surprise it's happening now.

  • A little know fact about the Christian Religion in the US is that, unless you specifically demand it, you remain in the particular parish you were brought up as. Which means that even though I became an Atheist I still am listed in the Catholic Church. And if you move to a different parish, you are listed on the new AND the old. So do not trust that the religious majority is as big as it claims, it is very exaggerated.

  • John, there was a Golden Age. It was the late 1930's to mid 50's. It began with Superman's first appearance in Action 1. Wait, you're talking about religion not comics. Nevermind.

  • @Jonisdaman That's a new one. Are you really taking yourself seriously?

  • Ahhh, that was that one dance that I can't remember the name to! Is it the popcorn dance? The leek dance? I don't know, I can't remember. Grrrr

  • I'm a Muslim Nerdfighter & I absolutely love how you actually know about Islam before saying anything. I love that. John Green, I have so much respect for you.

  • i'm an atheist so i don't care

  • I like the dancing :)

  • I just ate an apple piece with a fork. It looked like the fork was riding my apple, the each tine acting as a leg. (For some reason my fork only has two tines instead of the usual three).

This is my third time watching the series of videos on religion. Vlogbrothers pwn!
