You are most welcome. I am launching a new project, if you will, in January. Hush hush for now, but be sure to check back with me, I should have an announcement on this channel by then!
amazing information, when the student is ready the teacher appears. thanks for being a guru in this speciality and actually sharing your tips, resources and speciality knowledge......
i've been scouring the internet for a video just like this! i practice brazilian jiu jitsu and one of the key parts of my game is having a nearly unlimited range of motion in my hips, knees, and legs. your attention to detail really helped me improve the way i stretch, both in its safety and effectiveness!
Doc. Thanks for these amazing videos. I'm one of the founders of our Ultimate Frisbee club in India. We play on both the beach as well as on gravel. We've had a number of injuries related to the sport. Mostly muscle tears. For the last 4-5 months we've been diligently following a number of your stretches. We really like the way you explain the mechanics behind the stretches. It helps us understand the importance of these stretches as well as where our body is limiting us.
Thanks for posting this, Dr. I have a question, though: you mentioned that one can stretch for a few minutes, but I have heard (without evidence) that stretching for more than two minutes at a time can be damaging to the muscles. Is there any grounding to that, or is it just a myth? Thanks a lot! ~Faissal
If someone stretches incorrectly, without attention to details and posture, they could hurt themselves in less than two minutes!
I hold stretches for a long time: the goal is not only to lengthen the muscle, but to allow full contractile control over the length of the muscle at the limit of my stretch. To achieve that, I hold stretches for several minutes, and have taught thousands of folks to do the same, You need to know what the sensation is that they are feeling: is it pain or not?
Thanks a lot for your response Dr. I was told that long stretches were bad as a general statement, with no context. I think I know, from experience, what you mean by incorrectly done stretches being painful and hurtful. I used to hold horse stands for five minutes without hurting myself, so I had to ask because I suspected that what I was told was wrong. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "allow full contractile control over the length of the muscle at the limit of my stretch," though.
What it means is to have the same power and control over your limb (in this case, my leg) regardless of the height of the kick. So, I have as much power in my side kick whether I kick to someone's stomach (my leg perpendicular to the ground) or their head.
cool
