German Af Tornado IDS s 45+53, call sign 'RETRO 52' diverted to Shannon wed evenin last suffering in flight engine shut down.The aircraft was 1 of 4 being ferried east across the NAtlantic. A 2nd aircraft c s 'RETRO 51' acted as shepherd til 45+53 was on the ground but didn't land, instead carryin on to Germany. d 2 remainin aircraft were noted passing tru England and Holland with c s 'RETRO 53' ,the tornado 45+53 is parked on Taxiway 11 awaiting the arrival of some spares.

sadly i couldn´t find any videos about their little "Zaunkönig"-competition they have over there...

as my brother told me (he was on duty at the GAFTIC for a year, but only in admin), the flyboys had a bet who could land with the minimum runway usage. So they come in as low as possible, but unfortunately there is some fence (Zaun) at incoming flight path. The Zaunkönig is the guy who manages the shortest deceleration way WITHOUT taking the fence with him with the landing gear...

Yes the Tornado has a Terrain Following Radar (TFR) which keeps the plane automatically 60 metres above the ground (and hopefully under the enemy radar) whilst the pilot drinks his beer^^

There are lots of different versions of the plane IDS strike-fighter, RECCE reconnaissance (6 of em in Afghanistan atm) or ECR which can locate enemy radar emitting anti-air systems and destroys em with HARM missiles (they protected other NATO planes during the Kosovo War).

The green round display is the german ESRRD (E-Scope and Radar Repeater Display).

In the video you can see the E-Scope mode. It is some sort of side-view, where the radar returns from directly before the aircraft within the range up to 6 nautical miles (together with some calculated flight path information) is shown.

In Repeater mode, the ground mapping radar picture can be shown. (This is a wide angle radar scan presented as seen from gods-eye-view.)

The Tornado is just a piece of shit compared with the F-16 or even the Mirage 2000

as a fighter yes... thing is though its a bomber. At low altitude it will out run just about anything, M2K and F-16 included. As an Interceptor it has greater endurance then both the F-16 and M2k and outguns the F-16. So considering the IDS/Gr.1-4 are bombers and the ADV a dedicated interceptor it is not "shit", in its intended roles it is far superior. If you want to go hunting migs however then you really dont want to get WR in a Tornado.

granted, though it was never intended to be used for mig hunting, BVR yeah it'll compete just as well as anything else but WVR no sane pilot would take an F.3 within 20 miles of a Mig/Su.

My poit was though that it is not a "shit" aircraft, used as intended it will outperform most western fighters. Only real competitior as an interceptor is the F-15.

Try not to think of it as a fighter, more a flying SAM site.

during sea trials the germal air force decided to do high speed passes and turns in thier panama tornados

it was fucking awesome
