When I saw the police on the "Ghost" tour they played this song over the PA after the band did their final encore. I could tell it was Sting, but I had no idea where it was from until I later saw the movie and the promo clip.
Pretty much the hottest man alive, back in 1982-1984. He is so beautiful in Brimstone and Treacle, it's almost a little distracting. I mean, he is *beautiful* to look at.
@monkey1poison Very cool. If you've seen the movie Brimstone and Treacle, the use of this song is painfully ironic - an evil man unintentionally "spreads happiness".
Aaaaaagh jammy git, if I'd ever had had the fortune to have been born with his looks then the girls around the world wouldn't have been safe beleive you me.
Ah, some cheerful words of encouragement from the na-baron Feyd Rautha himself. If I had had to cast a musical version of "A Clockwork Orange" back in the 80s, guess who I would've cast in the lead? (And anyone who said "Rod Stewart" knows what they can go do with themselves.)
@postingoldtapes I've added subtitles with the lyrics. Hopefully they'll show up soon. Then, you can select them and they will show up in any language Google knows how to translate.
No that is NOT sting dancing in the video!! his head was superimposed over the body of Wayne Sleep using state-of-the-art "cardboard cutout" technology!
I also met sting when one of my shortlistings was up for musical of the day. I gave him a lesson in how to play the spoons with his toes and mouth organ with his butt cheeks!
he was very impressed!!
The world is still a very big place if you'r a fairy fly!
This song is by Vivian Ellis from the musical Mr Cinders. I met the guy in the early '90's as my own musical was shortlisted for that year. And I gave Sting a piano lesson once. Small world!..
By the way this video is not actually in the movie BRIMSTONE AND TREACLE. It's Sting's own video independent from the actual movie. The goings on here seem a little too lighthearted whereas the movie is a bit more serious and menacing.
One of my favorite Sting songs, but I can't find this in any digital form, neither MP3 download nor compact disc. Been looking for it for years. If anyone has any information, let me know.
Sting has one of the most unique and yet beautiful voices of all time. There could never be a voice that could even come close to copying his. Love this song, it is one of his hidden treasures
Sting has been my #1 idol since May, 1981 when I first saw The Police on Kasey Kasim's top 40 hits (Don't Stand....) I've worn my hair and dressed like him during high school- '82-'86!!
I tried to wear my hair like him and dress like him during those years in high school also. Failed miserably!! I was just a skinny 155 pound twerp then.
My brother took me to The Police concert in 1982-83 in Denmark copenhagen-Brøndby Hallen. They played this song after the concert:I was 11 years old.Love the song.Gordon do a great Sting version of the song.
I remember watching a video for this song on Frid*y N*ght Vid*os back in 1982(?) on N B C. I've searched high and low to find the name of this song, and couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks for posting it. It is a true gem!
Please, don't mention the names of networks on YouTube comments, or at least not mine. They search for their names and delete every video where they appear. Thanks.
I love the look on Sting's face at the end! This song means the world to me, whenever I'm sad, this is what I think of.... I can't seem to find it on any music sites so thank you for posting it! xoxo
I've drunk after time with his brother in Whitley Bay, thats Phil Sumner. In a pub called Dunes. Whitley Bay is absolutely fuckin awesome and Phil is a nice bloke as well
Bloody hell - I haven't heard THIS song probably since about 1983!!!! But what a stomping tune! I see that it was made in to the UK charts in the top 40, but didn't do that well. Sting does a half-decent job of the dancing and he's voice is perfect for the song. Ah! Where have the years gone...
makes me a little sad, funnily enough. they played this at assembly on my first day at high school when it was number one in the charts. makes me nostalgic.. it was just at the end of the police's career and the start of stings solo career I remember.
yes, especially when you realize it's sarcasm and you find out he's the devil at the very end when he turns and looks at you like he's wishing you all the contrary he's singing during this clip :D ..cute. you've seen the movie?
How true about short-sighted record companies! How Ironic that the music industry is murdering music...
If they don''t consider a song commercially viable, why don't they club together and start a "20cent download" site? For the sake of 25mb server space [for a lossless track] they could keep profitting from it forever.
Janis Ian said it very well, that it's "...easier for the record companies to sell a million copies of one recording than to sell one copy each of a million recordings". Never mind that iTunes has proven that the latter is a viable business model.
Pure nostalgia! Thank you! If any1 knows of a decent quality torrent for the audio, please gimme a shout - then again I could record this and add some gramaphone style crackles to give it the feel of the original lol.
yep.I saw police in Brønbyhallen Denmark 82.And after the show they played this charming song.I was 12.15 years later.I was in tely sang stings englishmann.Life is strange.Check it out
oh yes. Between the last Police record and his first solo Dream of The Blue Turtles he had some nip & tuck, and has done some since, including removing the tiny mole under his mouth! Sad what money can buy. Other than that, he still has a great voice and seems to have mellowed out a lot.
Holy, his expression is a little creepy there at the very end-what did he put in that coffee, cyanide? Makes the whole thing look a little like The Priest of Fleet Street lol Good song though, maybe Tim Burton can make a movie out of it lol
I just bought this movie on DVD - and watching the closing credits and listening to the song - brings this vid to mind. It is a great video and I like Sting's last look at the end - reminds me of the movie.
Great song, great performance, how true the words are.
What is the use of being miserable? there are always someone worse off than yourself. so lets take a leaf out of this song and make 1 person happy a day.
I have followed his career since he very first began, way back in 1978 or 79. I would say that he was one of the most intelligent artists' around [from any era.] The main character for Martin {Brimstone and Treacle} was offered to David Bowie. He turned the part down, for one reason or another. They then went to Sting. He turned out to be absolutely perfect for the part. He brought the right amount of innocence and menace.
funny to read comments about how cool sting was in this video. he's playing a part. the movie this comes from has him f*cking parapalegics. i like the underlying shitty looks he's giving while pretending to be innocent.
I am a choreographer and am in the process of creating a dance for circle dance groups to "Spread a Little Happiness". Sting's voice is just right for this song.
As difficult as it may be for people who have grown up with the stiff, self-important, middle-of-the-road Sting, once upon a time Sting used to be a very cool guy, the songwriter of a truly great band. But then he had that pickle installed in his butt...
Sting was the lead singer of the Police. The band members kept fighting. Just like the Beatles kept fighting. MONEY and EGO clouds creativity and unity. Sting hungered for JAZZ music and other forms of creative music outlet--even eastern music--Desert Rose. The Police are back together--Surprise? I studied in Ireland and did not like the weather either! Escape!
I agree, completely. Sting WAS very very cool in his younger days. I think that, as he has got older, he has become too self-important now. Much more so now, then when he was with The Police, or as an actor. I have gone off him a lot now, because of his attitude. But, one time, he was the king for me.
Positive philosophy. Dark clouds and rain must fall in everyones life. Work with the negativity. Sting uses rain alot as a symbol of negativity in his songs. Thousand rainy days since we first met! Big enough umbrella but its always me that ends up getting wet! It might be good to live in a arid, warm desert environment. Sting hears music in his head, natural talent-divinity?
Sting is a genius. Most intelligent artists have a capacity to reason which is far greater than politians. Politicians only have to know how to speak and smile - something they pick up by the age of 3. Artists, on the otherhand must develop their God-given talent - so they inspire us.
Nothing like the creepy movie from which the song comes --Brimstone and Treacle. For some reason, when I was young they always played this song at Christmas time. I have associated it with the holidays ever since. A beautiful tune that I finally found on CD after 25 years!
I bet he cringes at this now...not so much the song as its not bad, but the buttock clenchingly embarrassing dancing lol.

I really love Brimstone. Cool, albeit twisted, movie. I've never seen this video though, so thanks for bothering to post it.
I love Sting to bits.

The film could not have worked without Sting. The part required a mixture of charisma and repulsiveness.

I am a choreographer and am in the process of creating a dance for circle dance groups to "Spread a Little Happiness". Sting's voice is just right for this song.

This is rare footage of Sting actually being really cool.

Escape!

Read Andy Stewart's recent biography to get an overview of how the band happened and how it fell apart. A good read.

What's the name of the book?

He didn't write this song.

Sting is a genius. Most intelligent artists have a capacity to reason which is far greater than politians. Politicians only have to know how to speak and smile - something they pick up by the age of 3. Artists, on the otherhand must develop their God-given talent - so they inspire us.

I watched the film yesterday and the irony of this song is really devastating.

Shame as with the soundtrack Sting did for Brimstone.. it's all lost. I had so much hope for Sting at this point. Sigh.

Nothing like the creepy movie from which the song comes --Brimstone and Treacle. For some reason, when I was young they always played this song at Christmas time. I have associated it with the holidays ever since. A beautiful tune that I finally found on CD after 25 years!
