Im 54 years old and a rock and roller from way back but I never heard this song until it was played on "Coast to Coast " with George Nori. the other night. Good song....
@cbimbi You're wrong. The Tremeloes were given the song and they recorded it but had second thoughts about releasing it. So the writer, Jeff Christie, recorded it along with the Trem's instrumental backing. This then became a multi-million seller all over the world. The Trems later released it on an album.
@cbimbi So far we have learned it was originally recorded but not released by The Tremaloes, then recorded and released by its writer, Jeff Christie under the name Christie. It was also recorded by Middle of The Road and in Australia it was covered by Jigsaw to try to get sales by a local band. This was a common practice in the late 60's and early 70's
Saw them in '74 in Dublin with a roll on by Steve Harley performing " Sebastian" .S.H. nailed it with only a small echo box.Had my Yamaha 350 rd stolen that night never to see it again.Thank God for 'Ryan Adams' .
Reminds me of someone who cared for me and who I loved very much for his paternal caring of me and my brother as we grew up apart from our father...My late Uncle Chris will always be a special man and I regret not spending more time with him..even though I spent a LOT of time in his company as I grew from a young man into an adult. Thank you Uncle Chris for being the great man you were in our lives! These songs bring back beautiful memories of our times together back then.
Incredible memories - I can associate so many marvelous memories to every musical gem from those days. This song was so overplayed that I disliked it in those days, but have rediscovered it and LOVE it now! Thank you.
@JettRink50 It was their only hit in the US, but like many other groups, they had mjor other hits in the rest of the world. Check out the website and thisyoutube channel.
@wreehill And you are living in the past with your anti-Communist paranoia. As the Vietnam war was raging, this song was always taken by everyone I knew as meaning that the guy was ending his tour of duty and was going back to the states to live in a town called Yellow River. I didn't even know it was written by an English person. It just seemed to fit the "leaving Vietnam" idea so well. Only a right-wing tosspot (now THERE'S a tautology) could see any Moaist propaganda in it.
@MusicMadMaurice Something tells me your left-wing paranoia is cauaing you to insert politics into a song which contains none. It is simply the statement of a soldier who has successfully completed his military obligation and is happily returning home to the girl he loves in Yellow River. The song makes no reference at all to the Vietnam War. And even if it did, remember that a Democrat (JFK) got us into it, another Democrat (LBJ) escalated it and it took a Republican (Nixon) to end it.
@horarwgt I think you need to read my comment again, and this time do it carefully. I was rebutting the comment of wreehill who had posted a political comment. My text about the song itself is completely free of politics. I know the song makes no reference to the Vietnam war specifically but living in those times, that association was commonplace. In fact, your synopsis of the song's meaning is exactly the same as mine.
DAMN THIS WAS THE FIRST EVER VINYL 45' I GOT FROM MY DAD WHEN I WAS 8, I SUPPOSE HE THOUGHT THATS WHAT THE KIDS WERE LISTENING TO. WHAT GREAT MUSIC, I STILL LOVE IT.

It is a commonly held misconception that the pop/rock video age did not begin until November of 1975, when the outstanding single by Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody" - was released.
Well, this video by Christie - which was made to promote their debut single (the excellent "Yellow River") - predated Queen's "Bo Rhap" vid by approximately five-and-half years!
@TheEctomorph And before that Martha Reeves & the Vandellas shot a music video for "Dancing In The Street" (1963). If you check movie history, you'll discover one reel musical shorts -- sometimes shot like impressionistic music videos -- from the '50s, '40s, '30s and earlier! Check out the history of Vitaphone musical shorts, Soundies, Scopatones, the Hal Roach studio, etc. One song long musical performances were among the earliest of all sound movies! some are here on YouTube.
there was another video where they were going down the Thames River ....and the drummer was scary as hell...lol...anyway i love this song....takes me back to my childhood....thanks for posting

Didn't know 2 groups did this song till now. I have to give Christie the edge(rocks harder) but both are great. When this song came out some of the best music ever was being produced and this is no exception. This man fought for us in Vietnam and got pretty close to the Yellow River. The sacred bathing grounds in the Himilayas. Either that or he was well versed in India's geography.

This is a great song. My parents obviously thought so because they named me after the band. Unfortunalty im a man and its a girls name when used as a christian name so i dont really like it but its cool to know its origin.
Also im a guitarist so to know my name came from a fantastic band has helped.
1970's beautiful, favourite part of my life. Music then far better than garbage written and played today. 40 years ago. I was 12 and still in school. Travelling UK at this time and getting about a lot, not much travelling these days. Music was brill and life was too. Wish I was back there again.
@MrDayday58 Totally agree 40 years on and this is still classic, how many songs of this 21st century will still be that good that many years later, i ask.
This song is so funny. I always thought they sang "yellow nigger" and that it was a song about a man who saw a yellow nigger and couldn't get him out of his head LOL
Me trae buenos recuerdos.
At 1:03, it sounds like they're singing "Can I find ni****s in my mind"... LOL

This is a great song. My parents obviously thought so because they named me after the band. Unfortunalty im a man and its a girls name when used as a christian name so i dont really like it but its cool to know its origin.
Also im a guitarist so to know my name came from a fantastic band has helped.
@Mobyboy I totally agreed, an awsome song :)
Rock hard people!! The days of good bands will return :)
