Hey Doug, I have recently completed Grade 10 of high school and I have done quite well in art class but i do not think I can draw homes/ buildings well...Should drawing (in general) be a talent of someone even before they go to post-secondary, or is it something I will be able to build on and eventually be great at? The reason I am asking this is because I would enjoy pursuing a career in architecture and I want to know if I will succeed, even though my drawing skills are not amazing. Thanks.
@howtoarchitect Did you do them at random because the drawing program had nothing to measure with? That's why it looked squashed. I never place my vanishing points at random, I place them according to a specified angle, 90 degrees at the station point. I'm not an architect though, but I found the video interesting just the same. Cheers.
Let's say that you're trying to build a roller coaster track in 2 point perspective using the floor plan and elevation as you have done here. Since roller coaster tracks are rather organic in shape, is there a preferred view to create the elevation plan from, before tackling the 2 point perspective? It just seems like it'd get very confusing to build.
I guess if you practice enough, you get proficient at it... But i still think that doing all these renderings by hand is a waste of time... CAD software does a very good job at generating 3D models, perspectives and views. Leave it to the computers to do the tedious work.
well at least in my country you do take an exam with 4 drawn subjects, one calculate perspective (as shown in this video) one descriptive geometry (hope that's how it's translated) problem, one freehand perspective after an important/relevant building from the history of architecture (they supposedly give you a list) and one isometric composition, all to be done in 5 hours, usually including color
CAD looks synthetic...I'd only use computer-generated models for presentations, in which case I'd probably try something more like 3dsmax or cinema 4d for a realistic texturising. Traditional drawings still look ten times better than CAD generated. They have a certain feel to them.
I remember when i had to do a perspective by hand it is really draining work. i did a whole plan once by hand first time i did it took me 2 days 20 hours!!
@DickKnowsBest An anticipated, typical, but valid argument. However, enjoying my job won't cater to my hobbies, finance long term goals like designing and building a house to live in, and other extracurricular endeavors.
hi can you make a guide on cad please for newbies ? thank you

Hi Doug,
DId you scan the perspective to get it into Illustrator and Photoshop?
Also are your vanishing points at random or is there a method to choosing them?
Thanks.
Great vids btw.

@caramel07 yes. and yes. random. the original was too squashed, so I stretched in photoshop.

Do you focus on the outward appearance of your drafts first, or do you start with the floor plan and work your way to the exterior looks?

it's not that much work, you just need practice..studying to get into architecture so I am facing it and I find it fun personally

nothing is a waste of time if you enjoy it

or learn from it

That is very true.
The only concern I have over becoming an architect is do you need to be a good drawer?

@DickKnowsBest It was a facetious understatement. I guess I should have kept my description consistent.
I concede to that point -- money won't buy me happiness. But you can't say it doesn't buy opportunities in this materialistic world.

@fefaleite93 i'd love to be an architect but from what i've heard its job prospects are not good. An architect's wage is also not too appealing.
