  • Whoa, after all the conventional talking-animal crap dreamworks gives us and the brilliant-but-not-quite-ground­breaking gems Pixar did, this movie will be good for the soul.

  • Animation isn't just for kids. It started out for everybody and with 9, this is definitely projected for a more "aged" audience.

  • Yes, animation is not just for kids, I actually always stress that out to people. But when people see a trailer for a cgi full length feature in theatres, they instantly assume that it is, which gives those kind of movies a nasty little stereotype in my opinion.

  • Beowulf tried to be far too real to be considered 'animated'. It also failed at being both realistic and animated.

  • We have come to the point in film and animation, that an animation can look very real. In Beowulf's case it was pushed to a point where it would have been easier to focus on if it had been more of a real piece and less animation or vice versa. Good movie, but it could have done better.

  • Look up the Uncanny Valley principle. Basically a way of measuring how realistic something is. Most animations sit on one side of the 'valley' where they're clearly fake, allowing the human subconscious to recognize it isn't meant to be real. Ambitous animations like FF:SW and Beowulf fall into the valley because, despite looking realistic, they lack key qualities that allow the subconscious to identify it as fake or real, which leads to an immediate, instinctive negative reaction.

  • So yes, it was faking realism to the point that it couldn't be considered animation, nor realistic. It doesn't fit into either category. As powerful as animation is today, mature/R-rated photorealism is not the direction it should go in. It should take advantage of the fact it can do what the real world can not (read: More movies like 9).

  • It'll be competing with the remake of Plan 9 From Outer Space, which comes out on the same day. This should be MUCH better though, considering Plan 9's reputation as arguably the worst movie ever made XD
