I remember the first time I played this tape I was driving on the freeway and the car horns at the beginning had me looking around to see who I had cut-off!
The first use of the (now overused and abused) 8 finger/two handed tapping technique that Eddie VH exploited to it's fullest - IMHO - is to be found on Jeff Beck's version of the Freddie King classic, I'm Going Down'
@PromoterRalph Really? Which part on "I'm Going Down"? Probably something I'd have to listen with headphones; I'm not sure I could pick that out. Similar to Holdsworth's "Tokyo Dream(s)" in which if I hadn't seen it, I'm not sure I would have realized he was fretting with the right hand the last couple of notes in that first chord and those that followed. Hearing stuff and deciding what it is, is an art unto itself! ;)
Beck's phrasing is very authoritative here, just kicking ass... I prefer this live version to the studio version. I also like the unified band sound here w the JH Group.
I seen this concert at the auditorium theater in chicago with tony smith on drums jan hammer and i forget the bass player and Jeff of course it was awesome and so was the pot i smoked that night those were the days what a concert Jeff Beck is not God but God sure gave him the talent you dont play like him without some divine intervention!
This is one suave rock'n funky tune from a total powerhouse LP. Unfortunately, beck and what ever band he has with him never seem to be able pull off any of the tunes on this album the same way again, they sound disjointed and awkward in all recent takes I've heard.
I agree.. I think the fact he was playing with Jan Hammer's group on this tour and not just assorted session players might have made that difference. They are more focused and tight with the tune, not trying to "showcase" themselves. IMHO
My Uncle turned me on to Jan Hammer...said he was "OG" psychedelic....then of course I fell in love and then found out he and Jeff Beck were together on several jams....WOW.....too perfect...I imagine that Jeff Beck loves Jan Hammers style because hes partially deaf...lots of overtones in JH's style, perfectly compliments JB's style...Cheers!
As a kid I thought Eric Clapton was God...or Jimi Hendrix...and The Beatles were more popular than Jesus...which was true, btw...or Dennis Bergkamp...Maradona...Johan Cruyff...(the Savior) Anyway, aren't we all God's children? Wich means that a part of God resides inside of us...some are able to express that piece of the divine through some sort of medium...music, art, literature, sports...etc...but God is God, I agree ...antropomorhp...the Alpha & the Omega...the Oroeboros...:-)
I hate that Jan Hammer became something of a punchline after the "Miami Vice" fame... He was a brilliant pioneer in 70's rock keys.
Most players of the era did solos in a classical/ jazz rooted style- His "I can do a rock guitar solo as well as you can" style was one of the most amazing things I had heard at the time- The combination of playing skill with subtle manipulation of the minimoog controls was just astonishing. JH deserves a lot more historical credit than he ever got. /cheers
keep up? man, I'm a guitarist 1st and a keyboardist 2nd, and I love mclaughlin, but hammer never had to 'keep up' with anyone. His solos on the lost trident sessions for example, the best guitarists in the world would have to play perfectly to keep up w/ that shit! damn.
Goddamn right! The only keyboardist that could make his keyboard sound like a Fender Stratocaster on distortion mode, fed through an Echoplex. My God, that's awesome!
Seen them perform this rendition back in 77 some of the best guitar and drumming chops ive ever seen Jan Hammer also just blew everyone away Thanks for the tune alot of good memories
Yeah, the guy could play drums too like nobody's business. Listen to him playing keys AND drums on Jeff Beck, 'There and Back,' "Star Cycle." Man, does he have chops!
@tapeatsbill I can tell you lots of people try to copy him. I can't think of a whammy-bar "dive bomb" before Beck. EVH, never cited Jeff as an influence but I hear it.
@tapeatsbill Well, EVH imitated him all the time but never cited him as an influence. Hitting the pickup poles with the strings to make the "mousy" sound, G-string dive bombs, etc, etc... but they are good friends. Imitation is the best form of flattery.
Minute ago was listening to the greatest guitarsolo's ever....missed this one from Jeff Beck...this is an incredible, new way (1977)of touching strings...and LIVE!...
The best version by far!

At 16 years of age, I used to listen to this song over and over and over again...at full volume...with head phones on.
I still get a charge out of it. However I turn the volume waaay down. Don't want to make my tinnitus any worse then it is already.:)

I was at the JB gig in Vicar St. Dublin last Wednesday, and even though JB performed like the God he is, I miss the presence of Jan Hammer.
Tal played a bass solo and in one section, JB fingered the notes of Freeway Jam on the neck of her bass while Tal plucked.
