I remember watching this video in the 5th grade. The funny part is that some jerkoff wrote and produced this and thought "This'll get through to kids!" Either that or they just figured idiot elementary school principals would think that and buy it and give them money. I don't know which is worse.
lol we were watching this in my class a week ago (highschool) and my teacher said that Lil wayne Tupac and all those other stars were in it so they'd watch it and shutup
For years, my older sisters have been singing 'Give me that headband.' I mean, for YEARS. They told me once 'it was on some after school special back in the 80's.' Two years of searching, and I've found it.
the lead kid looks way out of place. should have found better actors for the other kids. not even realistic,. patronising for kids in general. especially nowadays. more kids would believe it if it was more realistic. the message is good but kids from where im from would take the piss out of it. i love lou goss by the way.
and fyi maybe kids should be learning to not trust creepy dressed black guys telling them to get into some sketchy looking elevator he calls "the fate elevator"...just saying...
oh wow i have not seen this video since the fifth grade and even then i was smoking pot regularly please half of the ideas in this video seem like they came from the mind of a pothead
I, myself, have never used pot. However, as a psychology major in college, and the psychopharmacology classes I had to take, I would say, with confidence, and objectivity, that there really isn't a lot of scientific data to support most of the claims made in this film. Not once in the film was the illegality of either of the drugs in question mentioned, and that, technically, is what can put a real damper on a kid's future. A criminal record, a urine test showing up positive, etc.
The fact that these videos are still being shown in public school classes, decades after they were made, go to show just how out of touch adults and teachers are with what kids and adolescents respond to.
I was shown this video in the 5th or 6th grade. All it did for me was educate me on which drugs are the best..........SERIOUSLY. This grass is great sue!!! Smokes??? That's all you got?? Yeah, pot is waaaayyy better. I was so naive about this stuff at that age because I wasn't subjected to it until.... hhmmmmm, yeah this video. Also, all we did was make fun of it from then on and even now today. It's mostly trash that should never be shown to children, leave the no drugs shit to the parents.
Fantastic video. I'm definately going to pass it on to other moms, teachers, etc. Infact, every one should pass this on to at least 1 person. Unlike some other educational videos I've seen, this one really does make you wanna keep watching. Kudos to the producers, actors, etc.
MY 5TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE WATCHING THIS RIGHT NOW!!!! I'm having the HARDEST time trying to get them to stop singing "Gimme that Headband". this film is almost as old as I am and it is AMAZING to see how attentive they are to it I mean they are REALLY paying attn. to it!
Hi there! I wrote the music and songs for this mini series. It was fun to write songs from the drugs POV! Sorry for the late response but I just saw this post.
@tyrus95 NICE! LOL... Every year my students watch this on VHS. They laugh at the size of the "tape" and almost need coaching as to how to insert it into the player! Today we went on a field trip and needed to take an elevater and some sang "... just take the elevator up..." Ahhh, kids. LOL! :-D

@raypeezy this is brain washing material...i heard this song 11 years ago in 5th grade and sing it until this day ...i even tried to recreate it from memory( i make music) crazy!
@raypeezy The reason they keep going around singing that is because they're making fun of you and this idiotic movie. When they grow up they'll realize that not everyone who drinks and/or smokes pot and/or cigarettes is a worthless wreck. When they realize you were lying to them, they'll no longer think drugs are a big deal. The truth is that some of your students will grow up do be drug users and some won't. It's out of your hands. I applaud your good intentions, though.
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA LOL! Feel better? Been holding that in for YEARS and simply couldn't wait 'till you could get your rocks off on ANY random teacher? I hope you do indeed feel better. LMAO at "when you realize you are lying to them..." Really? I am lying to them? Oh, this film states (and offers as fact) the EVERY one is on drugs? No, wait- YOU were there when I lied and told them that.
@raypeezy No, I have no hostility toward teachers. I was saying that the effort put into making this movie is more or less wasted. Not completely, of course, but I remember seeing this movie in elementary school and my friends and I laughing at it. And yes, we did go around the school for days singing this song--and making fun of it. We weren't singing it because we had had some kind of epiphany. What amuses me is that people actually thought this was going to get through to someone.
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA Fine, but that has NOTHING to do with me, or does your now stated rationale relate to your choice to attack, accuse, and single me out for "lying" based of YOUR erroneous assumption as to why I showed my (former) students this. How you abstracted my "intent" from my initial post is beyond me. Oh wells, I'm off to enjoy a Virginia Slim and a glass of wine... DAMN THAT FAILURE HEADBAND AND LOU GOSSETT JR!
@raypeezy Okay, I get it, but I feel compelled to clear something up--very basic: the movie is made to be shown to kids of about the age you stated, for a very specific purpose. So when you say you showed it to a bunch of kids, I think almost everyone would assume you showed it for its intended purpose. Like when you say you're going to enjoy a cigarette, I assume you're going to smoke it. But who knows, maybe you're going to eat it. Assumption is a natural instinct.
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA LOL! I too feel compelled to clear something up: whereas assuming may very well be a "natural instinct", being a douche to attempt to make a point is not. Comments directed at me such as, "The reason they keep going around singing that is because they're making fun of you..." or, "When they realize you were lying to them.." and, "I applaud your good intentions, though." warranted and deserved all the replies you received from me. DEFENSE is a natural instinct.
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA You stated you gripe was at the film for various reasons, then your comments would be more duly directed at it,not an educator using it for educational purposes- as it is [also] intended as noted in its title. There can be a difference between intent and objective for use as well. If I ate the cigarette and enjoyed it then I did what I SAID I was going to do albeit not the [very specific] intended method for use. BTW I purposely used "enjoy" opposed to "smoke" for that reason.
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA LOL! Thanks for affirming the obvious in your statement, " The truth is that some of your students will grow up do be drug users and some won't. It's out of your hands. YOU DONT SAY!? Hell, I thought I had headband powers to prevent EVERYONE from drug use. FML that I would car that 12 y/o make fun of me! OF COURSE they make fun of the vid- Its older than me!
@YourDogIsDeadHAHA BTW: the INTENT was to compare the quality of VHS to DVD for a technology timeline over the last 100 years- NOT drug prevention. This was the ONLY VHS we could find. Thank you applauding what you ASSumed were my "good intentions" unfortunately, you were erroneous in assumptions.
It's amazing how much effort was put into anti-drug campaigns and so many MANY people become recreational drug users. It's so sad and it makes me so angry that people do drugs regardless of knowing the consequences. Can someone please tell me WHY?
Sorry guys, but I don't want to be involved in dangerous behaviour like drugs. You just go ahead while I let a total stranger lure me into a dark abandoned warehouse
On a serious note, videos like these had the best intentions, but I can't remember a time as a kid no matter what age when we didn't make fun of these videos, and I was their target audience back in the 80s. They went over the top with demonizing every drug the same and presenting implausible situations with hokey solutions that there isn't a person on this planet that could relate to them. Drugs are bad, but so is walking alone in a dark alley with a talking rainbow headband.
although, to a degree I do miss being bombarded with the "Education can be fun!" lessons when I was little. Today, it's all about "That's why they call it work! If it was fun you wouldn't get paid!" And they wonder why we grew up to do drugs.
I actually bought the original vhs off ebay a year back and it's one of the best buys i ever made! This is pure 80's gold and as long as i live i'll never get the elevator song outta my head! Damn i gotta get one of those Lou Gossett Jr. robes! XD
i cant believe i was brainwashed by this in middle school. i also notice miss pot's head looks like a bud.
