This is Mimi is great, but I don't like her portrayal of the character. My fave willl always be Daphne. She had the right voice for the music (exactly the kind of voice Jonathan Larson wanted, a slightly raspy, Janis Joplin-like voice).

Well, cinema and musical theatre are different media. I also loved Rosario, and I doubt any theatre Mimi could have matched her (except perhaps for this Mimi, Renee Goldberry, who is also a TV actress). But at the same time I don't think Rosario could have done such a perfect sequence live.

Well, that's why musical theatre actors get paid: they are supposed to reach all the notes their character requires, and if they can't do that, then they are not cast in that role. In movies it's different, because they don't do it live and making a movie is really expensive, so what matters most is that the actors will benefit the producers by attracting audience to the theaters. In fact, that was the most important reason Rosario was chosen (not her musical skills).

We just did RENT at our school (HERH). One of the 4 in Canada who were privledged enough to do it. The only one outside of Ontario. Personally I played Benny, and I'm white (And for the record, NOT bald!) Well sometimes in Broadway its not always about the skin or ethnicity/nationality that counts. I love dark-skin-toned Mimi's for some reason. But yeah, Latina's come in different colors and besides, Rent cast members have different colors. When I saw rent in February Angel was Asian(played By Telly Lueng)..so Yeah it doesn't really matter. Renee is definitely the best Mimi ever..you gotta love her!
