There was a recording of the entire opera on Cappricio. But I have to tell you that fredigundis (dot com) is a much better opera. Sadly there has never been a commercial recording. The last concert performance I know of was in 1979.
I bought a recording of "Notre Dame" many years ago and was very disappointed by it. The Intermezzo is wonderful and very beautiful, but I found the rest of the opera surprisingly dull and the libretto very static, which is a shame, given that "The Hunchback of Notre Dame/Notre Dame de Paris/Der Gloeckner von Notre Dame" is a wonderful story and source.
I must say that I completely disagree with you about the opera Notre Dame. I found it to be a tightly knit and very effective opera with affecting, first-rate music. The Carnival music, Dungeon scene and other things come to mind immediately. A near great work.
It's because of his evident Nazi past and dedication, sadly. I agree the Metropolitan should have his operas - though, it will take some severe "maturing" from the public, in order to do so.
@NnFfBb It;s important to remember that Richard Strauss and Carl Orff also worked for the Nazis and yet their reputation seems to have survived unscathed.
I don't think the fact Schmidt was associated with the Nazi regime is the reason his work is not better known today.
I think the worst that could be said about him was that he was a bit naive politically at the very end of his life. The Nazi's used him (the completion of Deutsche Auferstehung) and probably frightened him. But it didn't take much for composers to be tarred like that.
reminds me of Korngold's music. The same passion so to speak, beautiful !!

What can we learn about this interesting man, Franz Schmidt? What a lush sound.
Quite popular.

I wish they would perform this opera at the Met in NY! I can not understand why they don't warm up to a composer as wonderful as Schmidt...

eines der schönsten und eindrucksvollsten Musikstücke für mich, leider selten zu hören

All of Schmidt's music is too seldom heard.
And if you think this is good, just listen to the symphonies!
