@chiblackhawksfan8819 ive always wanted to get an opinion from someone in the midwest or east coast... what do you think about oregon always changing uniforms? i hear a lot of good and bad things from around the country
@Workin0nit umm personally i think it's strange. I feel like once you find a uniform that fits you should keep it. A lot of my favorite teams have had their uniforms for a long time because they work. But again this is just one persons opinion. The teams i'm talking about are the Blackhawks, Cubs, Bulls....etc. But i mean if that's what they want to do then that's cool.
I'm 31 yrs old and this is my favorite Iowa game of all time. Just because of everything that was going at the time. Watching the game at my friend's with his wife that doesn't drink that much. Didn't know it at the time but we were pounding UV shots in the second half which was a huge mistake for her. My little brother was at the worst wedding he'd ever been to so he was talking to me on the phone when that kick went through. I gave play by play to 20 people on that kick that i will never see
@TornadoesNMusic At least this had a (sort of) happy ending, as we went on to crush Indiana 34-7 like they were nothing (not as close as the score) and then really mashed Michigan State 49-18 (again not as close as the score) with an outside chance at the AP national title. Then we blow that happy ending by choking at the Rose Bowl. But know what? As far as I'm concerned, the Rose Bowl that year was the true national championship and the 2008 Lions were national championship runner-ups.
@Plattinumstatus And I suppose you'll never forgive Iowa for what they did a year later...and then again the year after that...Oh, and all those things Iowa did in the previous years. The Hawkeyes have won 8 of the last 9 meetings. Hard to forgive. :)
@geoffds Well, to be fair, 2003, 2004, and 2010 weren't that surprising because PSU was awful those years, as in Syracuse under Greg Robinson awful, 2002 and 2009 weren't surprising in retrospect because Iowa had dynamite teams those years, but 2008 was a shocker. Kirk Ferentz seems to be outcoaching Joe Paterno like Glen Mason repeatedly did, although IMO Mason was even more impressive because Ferentz gets more star players than Mason did. Even when PSU beat Minnesota under Mason, it was close.
Good video. Kinda funny that the most dramatic moment... the game winning field goal was played as the video faded out. But then, this is a PSU-made video. Although for the sake of journalism and good drama... the FG should have been emphasized. It was after all the happy ending. ;)
@ignatiusreilly1994 Well, for Penn State it was a sad ending, but what I love about these guys is that even though it has a PSU slant to it, they show both teams' big plays and even some of their small plays to paint a truthful picture of the game. Which is why as a PSU fan, I even find the highlight losses enjoyable (in a tragic type of way). But this didn't hurt as much as 1999 Minnesota, this was more "NO! DAMMIT! NO!" while 1999 Minnesota still gives PSU fans indigestion 11 years later.
@Hawkeyesownyou1 Well, for my Lions this was a painful loss (but at least PSU bounced back to rout Indiana and Michigan State and gave USC a game, who as far as I'm concerned is true national co-champions with Utah in 2008, nobody will ever convince me otherwise), but I know that for Iowa it was the magical turnaround that the 2004 goal line stand at Indiana was for PSU. Ever since then, close games that previously eluded your Hawkeyes have mostly gone your way since that.
Now the 95 Hawkeyes against the 95 Huskers? It depends upon which Hawkeye team shows up. The one that went down 56-0 in the second quarter vs Ohio State or the one that crushed the Pac Ten champion Washington Huskies 38-18 (we were up 38-6 after 3 and held Washington to 90 yards until we called off the dogs.)
We lose no matter what but our best effort would make it a three TD loss vs a 7 TD loss
BTW I have a memory of Bobby Engram from our 1995 game. I sat in the endzone right next to where he made an incredible diving catch for a 13 yard touchdown to put Penn State ahead 34-27 in the fourth quarter. He caught it on his fingertips and I simply had to stand up, decked out in full Hawkeye attire, applaud him and yell out: "Hell of a catch Bobby." Such an underrated receiver.
I think if any year is your year, 2010 is it. You have most of your guys coming back, and in the last two years your losses were by a combined 22 points, not many teams can say that. Also, Vandenberg showed his true potential when Iowa very nearly beat Ohio State. But next year should be a good one for Iowa. Penn State, not so sure. I'm a Penn State fan but I still see PSU only finishing 6-6 or 7-5 next year. I say that because after PSU has a great year or two years, they have one bad year.
On paper it looks great. But I think we might be a lot like your 2009 Penn State team. Lots of people returning BUT we lose quite a bit on the offensive line which might keep us out of the BCS race. Of course being as successful in 2010 as you were in 2009 is nothing to sneer at and I would be overjoyed.
Also remember that we were close to losing quite a few games against lesser teams. Nothing will come easy.
Is there any other reason you think Penn State will slip so much?
As you said, our 2009 team was pretty good. And if Wagner made that long FG in the Iowa game and they made some ST stops of Ohio State's Ray Small, PSU might have been unbeaten, so if you're a lot like our 2009 team, that's really nothing to worry about. What worries me about the 2010 team of Penn State's is that the Nittany Lions are relying on a so far unimpressive quarterback Kevin Newsome, we lose most of our front seven, especially the most talented members, and we also lose a good corner.
I do have to say, regarding MOV, was despite the fact that we had an awful defense in 1994...
that Penn State team that killed us that year was simply incredible.
We had a damn good team this year. We were a lot like your 1987 NT team though. We play an opportunistic bend don't break D and made timely plays on offense and special teams. Statistically we weren't dominant but we kept opposing teams scores low
That Penn State team in 1994 certainly was an amazing team, the best team to be ripped off as far as the NC goes. Completely agree about the parallels between the 1986 Nittany Lions and the 2009 Hawkeyes, I kept saying that all year. Had Stanzi not been injured, you would have beaten both Northwestern and Ohio State and possibly advanced to the national championship game, or at the very least, the Rose Bowl to take on the Oregon Ducks. I believe that Iowa could have beaten Texas or Alabama.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who saw that similarity between the 86 Lions and 09 Hawks teams. The only differences I know of, besides the national title, is we probably had a better QB and you had a better RB in DJ Dozier.
I also noticed a few parallels with how Iowa seemed to save their strength for big games, knowing their defense would do enough, just like Penn State. Penn State almost lost to a horrible Cincy team, winning 23-17, beating an awful Maryland (who we have never lost to) 17-15, and barely scraping by a 5-6 Notre Dame I think 24-21, but on the other hand, beating a great Bama squad 23-3 and beating Miami 14-10, who blew out many teams Penn State looked merely okay or even vulnerable against.
Our season almost mirrored that. I still remember that Fiesta Bowl. That game is a textbook on how to play bend but don't break and be opportunistic on D. You gave up well over 400 yards but didn't give up an offensive TD and forced 7 turnovers. Your QB (Shaffer) just didn't make mistakes and he just won.
That is what we model after. The 09 Hawkeyes are the model Ferentz team and likely one that made Paterno smile outside of that 21-10 affair.
This will not soothe any bitterness about that year but knowing what we know of Tom Osborne, he likely felt robbed as well. He would have preferred to settle it on the field with the winner take all. A winner, a loser, no tie.
Finally we the fans were robbed of a great matchup.
Unfortunately, he had no reason to feel robbed, because Penn State was not even granted a dual national championship, which is all Nittany Lions fans would have needed to feel like we got our due. But they looked for any excuse to drop us, and so they used a not as close as the score game against a good Indiana team that had Trent Green at QB as their reason. But I agree, that would have been an awesome matchup. I say Penn State would have won that one by a score like 28-21.
I am not trying to diminish your robbery in any way shape or form. Certainly he wasn't as robbed as the 1994 Penn State team was. But knowing Tom Osborne he would have preferred no controversy and would have preferred to give his kids the challenge of that Penn State team with only one winner. Just like he refused to accept the tie vs Miami in the 1984 Orange Bowl and a CERTAIN TITLE, he wanted one winner and one loser. Yeah he was robbed of a chance to win it legitimately vs those Lions.
Completely agree, I'd have loved to have seen those two play each other. I've heard people who played on both teams saying that they'd have liked to play the game somewhere, anywhere, even out in some corn field just to see which of the two teams is better. That and the 1997 split national title led to what developed into the BCS. But in the end, I think what we really need is a playoff system.
Oh yeah. That Nebraska defense (hell the whole team) would remain largely intact the next year when it absolutely destroyed the fun-n-gun and became the first team to shut Steve "Superior" up. Their defensive line had four men who wuld be consensus All Americans at one point in their career. Then they had the best option QB ever in Tommie Frazier and a killer offense themselves.
Then there is Engram, Collins, Carter, Brady and that Penn State offense.
The most intriguing matchup would be Nebraska's defensive line vs the Penn State offensive line (which is simply the best O-LIne I have seen in the Big Ten in my lifetime.)
To be honest though I would favor the 94 Nebraska team. Your defense was questionable that year and that offense moved the ball well against Sapp, Lewis and that Miami defense in that year's Orange Bowl.
Well, to be fair, although Penn State's defense wasn't as good as the 1986 defense, it was pretty underrated, because I remember Penn State would get a huge lead, say 45-10 at halftime, and then the backup defense would give up some touchdowns to finish with a score like 59-31, which made the defense look worse than it really was. However, I think the Huskers' defense that year was really good, even better than the underrated Oregon "Gang Green" defense that year that shut down most everyone.
The 1995 Huskers are probably the best team I'd ever seen in my lifetime, with a real balance of offense, defense, and special teams. Beating Florida 62-24 in a national championship game was enough of a one-sided rout that we wouldn't see a NC blowout of that magnitude until the 2004 Trojans pounded Oklahoma 55-19 in either the Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl (I know it was 48-10 after three, so USC went pretty easy on the Sooners at the end). Like that game, even the backups scored against Florida.
Absolutely. Peeple forget how dominant that Florida team was. They were favored to win. No game was closer than ten points and they routed three top 10 teams. More amazing was the boneheaded coaching by Spurrier. He had to know about Nebraska's defensive line and he kept running five wide no back sets, even on his own goal line and couldn't figure out why Nebraska sacked Danny "Woeful" nine times and picked him off repeatedly? Joe Pa or KF would have gone to protective formations.
To be honest, by the way the Florida team played, I bet the 1995 Nittany Lions could have given them a better game. Not saying the 1995 Lions would've won, but I think it'd have been more like a 42-14 game, which is hardly anything that could be remotely called a good game, but it'd have looked a lot better than what Florida did. If you remember, that Penn State team crushed #16 Auburn 43-14 in the Outback Bowl, and it wasn't even that close, it was 43-7 after three.
I haven't seen Iowa dominate too much at the line of scrimmage in most recent games except in the fourth quarter of 2009 when Penn State had all the piss knocked out of them from that interception and that let Iowa put it out of reach with a field goal. However, Iowa did a great job overall in 2002 against a great Nittany Lions team (the only year of the dark years we didn't suck) and that was mostly because Iowa of 2002 was one of the best Big 10 teams of the 2000s, I'd put them in the top 10.
In 2008, other than that first drive, you didn't really do much to Darryl Clark, and Penn State recorded more sacks on Stanzi than Iowa did on Clark. If you rememer, Penn State had a huge TOP advantage and other than two drives, dominated Iowa at the line of scrimmage. However, I know you're not mostly referring to 2008. However, I'd say outside of 2007 and 2008, you did dominate at the line of scrimmage.
Northwestern ruins your seasons actually, if you're talking football. Penn State in 2000-2004 wasn't really all that good except 2002 (but you were out of this world good that year) so I wouldn't really brag about those seasons, they were ruined long before Iowa simply added another log into the fire. 2008 was probably your best foil of our season, I don't consider 2009 a true upset because you were 10 points away from playing for the national title. You were just simply better than us in 2009.
I think what happens with Penn State-Iowa is that Joe Paterno does the same thing against Kirk Ferentz that he did against Lloyd Carr. It's almost like he wants to beat Ferentz at his own game, if you notice, there wasn't much of the Spread HD offense in the games against Iowa. The only reason that Penn State won in 2007, and by a blowout no less, is because JoePa realized that an 0-3 hole would be impossible to climb out of. I think if PSU played their own game, it'd be more back and forth.
I've made the same observation. I've noticed that Joe Pa, in big game,s seems to let it loose until he gets a lead and then gets very conservative. Now conservative isn't a dirty word in my book and it has obviously worked for Joe Pa for decades....
but that style of game is right up our alley. We like to keep it close and then force a big turnover or make a big play on special teams.
That's exactly what's hurt PSU against Lloyd Carr's Michigan and now Kirk Ferentz's Iowa team. Penn State tends to play conservative in big games, and although that works for us against Jim Tressel (like in 2001, 2005, and 2008, and it almost worked in 2009 except our special teams failed us, also almost worked in 2006). I wouldn't even go so far to say a "big lead", I think he likes to just get any lead whatsoever and nurse that lead, thankfully he stopped against Michigan State after 2007.
According to the video, the windchills were in the 20s. I thought that it was much colder than that from the information that I was given from others pertaining to this game. I was told that the temperatures were around 0 and the wind chills were in the minus-20s. Until hearing that it wasn't as cold as I previously thought, I feared that the players on both teams risked frostbite just to play this game.
Penn State Football Story does a fantastic job of showing both sides of the game equally, giving a fair picture of the entire game story, no matter the opponent or result, wouldn't you agree?
Go Iowa, ranked 6th now, but wil probably not move till Florida, Alabama, and Texas all get beaten, or if Iowa wins the conference and goes 12-0. Damn BSC and their dumb conference bias.
To be honest, I'm cheering for you guys to win out the rest of the way, although the Arkansas State game worried me. I think if any team has a chance to win out, it's the Hawks. This year is kind of a "what if Iowa had won all those close games they lost last year?" scenario it seems. I'll be pulling for you the rest of the way out, I think a PSU and Iowa fan can agree on one thing, we DON'T want Ohio State to get the B10 championship AGAIN! I hope Iowa beats them in the Shoe in November.
Fuck all u iowa bitches. u get lucky every year, your a shitty fluke team. When's the last time you hicks went to a rose bowl? 91? Let me know when you faggots come even close to a national championship or rank in the top 5. It will never happen. fuckin losers
Why brag over beating a cupcake team then? It makes you sound like Indiana bragging over beating Akron. Either Penn State is a good team that Iowa toppled or Iowa isn't that good for needing a comeback to beat Penn State, down 10-5 early in the fourth.
the only thing thats keeping iowa from truly becoming a dominant team is stanzi's inconsistency. i dont think iowa can depend on its defence all season, sooner or later they have to score points.
What doesn't make sense is that both teams were 3-0, Iowa has beaten better teams (Arizona, Iowa State), yet Penn State is ranked 5th, and Iowa isn't ranked? Makes sense to me. Ahh well, FUCK Penn state, we took em down AGAIN, LOL, 7 OUTTA 8.
Remember, PSU is 1-2 vs Iowa since 2005, each time we met both teams had at least six wins. Most of your wins over us were in 2000-2004, and 2002 was the only worthwhile year (you were B10 champs that year anyway). Although it seems lately you've become the Bengels to our Steelers, the balance could shift again. In the 80s and 90s, Penn State owned Iowa, only losing twice in the series (1983 and 1996, although your 1996 win over us was huge since we were 11-2 and #7 at year's end).
1-2. You were favored in all three games. Twice you were a top five team losing to unranked Hawkeye teams.
2000-2004 we were undefeated against you, twice while being underdogs and BOTH on the road.
In the eighties we went 1-1, beating you once again on the ROAD setting a record for points scored in Happy Valley that still stands today. And yes we were underdogs.
The 90s? 1-4 but we were underdogs in every game and beat you in 96 in Happy Valley when you were top ten.
Admit it: Every team, no matter how good, has a perfect foil. Usually due to the style of play and the schemes. The Hawkeyes under Ferentz are yours. One commonality though is we have dominated the line of scrimmage.
Northwestern is starting to become quite a foil for us.
In 2000-2004, Penn State was mostly awful, so that's more why Ferentz owned Penn State in that time. But for the modern era, he's doing pretty good as well I'll admit. I think what it really comes down to is that the last two games were played in awful conditions. Iowa plays better in slop than Penn State does almost always. By contrast, 2007 was a beautiful day and Penn State won in an epic blowout (both teams finished with non-losing records and were tied for 5th in the Big 10 that year).
So why were you favored in two of those five games if it was only because you were so "awful?" We were unranked in 02 with a loss to ISU when we beat you on the road and we had an absolutely awful team in 2000.
Awful conditions actually favor Penn State as they play a more fundamentally conservative game than we do.
I don't really have a clue why we would have been favored in a year like 2000 when Toledo absolutely beat the crap out of us and we were humiliated 45-7 by an Ohio State team that wasn't even that good. In 2002, you were only unranked because of lack of prestige at the time, but that huge 2002 year really looked to change that. If you remember, you were late in the season ranked #3 and finished Big 10 cochampions with Ohio State, so I wouldn't put much stock in your underdog status in 2002.
And in the 90s, only one time did you beat a HAwkeye team with a winning record and that was when we were in the middle of a four game losing streak in 1995.
I think the most impressive thing about Penn State's 90s wins over Iowa is the margin of victory. However, I'd say that Iowa upsetting a Penn State team that was one of the best Big 10 teams of the 90s that ultimately kept them from a 3 way conference title tie, especially in Beaver Stadium, was certainly impressive. I think what's really amazing is that most close games go Iowa's way, and that goes back to what I said, the Hawks seem to be better at keeping their focus in inclement weather.
The only games that I'd call Iowa a true underdog (I know, hindsight is 20-20, but perception is not everything, and Iowa was disrespected most of those times) were in 2007 and 2008, maybe 2000. Because, for example, would you really say that the 2002 Penn State team, that finished 9-4 (5-3) and lost the Capital One Bowl was better than the 11-2 (8-0) Orange Bowl team that played USC close for the first three quarters? However, 2008 was certainly a big upset for Iowa that helped set up 2009.
Like you said, hindsight. Yeah 2008 was definitely a huge upset. I don't argue that any other of those games were BIG upsets. 2002 I would call even enough and you had it at home. We were a better team at the end of that season than the beginning. That Orange Bowl ticked me off. We were flagged for five offsides in the 2nd quarter after we already made three sacks. Prior to the game the refs made it clear they were going to protect the QBs. It hurt us more because Banks was mobile.
More importantly about the refs decision was our defensive line was our strength and we knocked out 9 quarterbacks that year. Banks never had to worry about being sacked with his mobility. Basically the refs took away our strength. Rarely do I blame the refs for a game but the way they called it helped USC out a great deal. We didn't get another sack after all those egregious flags. All of them were piddly to flat out terrible calls. But they had to protect the prize QB
I completely agree about that Orange Bowl. There are very few games that I actually say were crooked, but that one was sure one of them. Another was in 2005 PSU vs Michigan (and ironically later on, Michigan got robbed in the Alamo Bowl). I think that Iowa was a better team than USC that year, because if you remember, USC couldn't do anything on offense until late in the third quarter once the Iowa defense had been messed with enough by the refs that it altered the gameplay.
That game in 1984 didn't quite set a visitor score record in State College, that dubious honor goes to Lehigh's 106-0 win on the lawn of Old Main (although that's when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), but with Penn State as more of an unofficial home team in the kickoff classic, Nebraska beat Penn State 44-6. That game you refer to was a shootout 42-34, more an oddity. 2008 you were true underdogs, but 2009 I don't get why Iowa was unranked (you guys turned out to be great and us just okay).
Nebraska beat Penn State in East Rutherford and most people realize that I most clearly said a record in Happy Valley which is most decidedly not East Rutherford NJ.
last time i checked were 4-0 and you are 3-1 and last year we let you guys get to the rose bowl somehow and you got embarrassed by USC...... haha and we won the only big ten bowl game. Nice try with calling us a nobody. 04 beat florida in outback, 05 beat LSU in capital one, shared big ten title in 05 and went to alamo in 06 and raped in outback in 09. You never had a shot at national title last year or this year with Tim Tebow still in college so eat shit and get outside more
a nobody? Kid how dumb are you were one of top 3 teams in big ten, don't be mad that you cant compete with the top teams. Your pathetic, darryl clark is a joke heisman my ass. Your a nobody kid and your looking at the new big ten champs this year Suck it you fucking loser, get yours facts right before you talk. Penn State is a disgrace who makes the big ten look like shit, learn some football kid
I like it when the fans of the losing team refer to the winning team as a "nobody" team. The goal in football is to win. Iowa has done that 8 of the last 9 outings against Penn State. So if Iowa is a "nobody" team, what does that make the repeatedly losing team?
Iowa has been the better team, and Penn State was overrated. Pretty simple. Any doubts, read the score board.
IOWA is gonna come back and be ready for this we know that you guys will want revenge but we ALL know that you will not get that today freshman Wegher and he will run over, around, and through Penn St.
GOPSUWOOO ok first of all we did not cheat YOU guys killed yourself in the late 4th quater maybe you should go choach your corners to not to be so happy to touch the wide out and btw i still want to know how we cheated and for all PSU fans i respect yall but there something called never shake hands with losers and i still hate how you guys think you the hard asses in the big 10 IOWA has had the best big 10 defence every year so far that counts BIG GO HAWKS
this was a bitter pill to swallow last season however, saturday is two days away. and when we played michigan brandon minor gained 100 yards against our defense.
I can tell you why you lost... IOWA PLAYS DEFENSE AS WELL AS ANY TEAM!!! Plus, we love the fact that Joe Paterno hates us so badly. We love beating Penn State. We have your number and it shows in the games!!! Iowa is always gonna be an enema in Penn State's ass, lol.
iowa only won bc they new that they wer goin 2 lose with PENN STATE so they cheated 1 again how many times they cheated 2 billiion times well heres someth 4 iowa WE .... ARE....PENN STATE PAY BACK IS A B!TCH HA HA HA WE ARE MOUNTAIN LIONS U BIRDS U FREZEE R BUTTS 2 WIN A GAME WITH US WE KILL
the game im most worried about for psu is not iowa or osu but rather illinois for 3 reasons.. 1. its on the road and 2. i thought we would dominate them last year and they played very well and couldve even won that game with a few breaks here and there and 3. wed be coming off an emotional win vs iowa the week before... juice benn and dufrene are scary and that game scares me
Even though Illinois hung around for three quarters, Penn State took control of that game from the second quarter onward, so I'm not too worried about that one. I predict that Illinois will surprisingly implode like in 2003. The game that worries me is at Michigan State. Northwestern also concerns me a bit.
illinois has too much talent to do that bad.. they will win at least 4 games and i think theyll win 8-9.. nw doesnt worry me that much simply bc they dont have the athleticism to compete with us for two halves.. now mich st maybe if and if were undefeated better not be cuz that would put a dagger in our program.. however i think them losing ringer will hurt a bit but theyll be better on d.. im worried a lil but not a lot about that game
One thing I'm going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction about is the general prediction that Ohio State will win the conference. I have a feeling they'll go 8-4 (5-3) and lose in Beaver Stadium by two touchdowns or better.
I meant to say "One thing I'm going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction about is the general prediction that Ohio State will win the conference is wrong". Ohio State will finish 4th or 5th in conference.
Even though this video is a highlight video of a game Penn State lost, this has to be one of my favorite highlight videos because of how well made it was. It showed the highlights of both teams and gave better pictures of their drives than the other highlight videos. Also, the music is a little too perfect for the mood. Including the dreamlike, slightly sad music at the end. It also shows that although Penn State dominated the game, some bad luck did them in, and how things don't always work.
I think what did us in was that series of penalties at 2nd and 1 within field goal range near the end of the game. Without those penalties, the game would have been 30-21 and out of reach.
In 2007, Penn State beat Iowa 27-7, and it wasn't as close as the score, the lone Iowa touchdown was from an interception at Penn State's own end zone. That game was never in doubt. I think Iowa had something like two first downs and eight total yards all game.
While I do think Iowa will be good next year, the loss of Shonn Greene will put a huge damper on your offense. I predict Penn State to repeat as Big 10 champs in 2009, and Iowa will probably finish 10-2.
10-2 is my prediction for Iowa, too. I think the Hawkeyes lose at Beaver Stadium and at East Lansing, but finishes undefeated at home and beats the Buckeyes pretty convincingly on the road. I have Iowa picked to finish 2nd in the conference after Penn State (who I think will go 12-0 and 8-0 in conference play), then Michigan State, then Ohio State will finish 4th. It'll be a weird year with neither Ohio State or Michigan finishing in the top 3 of the conference.
i have to disagree, shonn greene wont be a HUGE loss, we have hampton and the guy behind him. i dont remember his name but i think it started with a D. but anyway, 10-2 is a good prediction BUT the year after next year we are going to be amazingly good. our d-fence is going to be great next year and the year after that
I think your tandem of Jewell Hampton and Paki O'Meara will make a great combination, and together might be able to do the work of Shonn Greene. Kind of like how when Tony Hunt graduated from PSU after 2006, a combo of Royster and Kinlaw worked pretty good in 2007.
well pakies not great we have a guy that i belive is coming in as a freshman who is great. but i might be wrong about pakie, but last year he didnt do great
If I remember right, Paki was the starter before Shonn Greene ran all over Maine. I expect a huge improvement from Paki but I think Hamptom will be the main running back. Your incoming freshman could be amazing like Stephon Green was for Penn State last year.
Anyways, about Ohio State, I expect Iowa to win solidly but pull away huge late to make it look like a rout. Maybe something like 35-14.
I think the best way for Iowa to get a nice win there is to take the crowd out early. I picture Iowa taking a lead early enough to take the crowd out of it. And Ohio State sholdn't be much trouble since all of their skill players except Pryor graduated (and if you remember, Pryor always struggled against stout defenses like Penn State and USC).
I think in 2010 it'll be a battle between Iowa and Ohio State for Big Ten supremacy. I see Ohio State in 2009 losing to USC, Penn State, Iowa, and someone else. I'm not sure who I think Iowa's second loss will be to, but I know one will be Penn State (according to the spring practice results, the Penn State defense is downright SCARY), the other may be a "WTF" loss.
yea it would be nice to beat ohio state for once, lmao. but with us early in the season you never know how things are going to go, the iowa state game in my eyes is the scariest game of the year. thats their only game that counts.
I noticed that for you guys Iowa State is like how Minnesota is for us, a perpetual thorn in the side. For example, PSU finished Big 10 #2 in 1997 but barely beat a 3-9 Minnesota 16-15, beat Minnesota in 2006 only because of a penalty that really was a bad call (even though I'm a Penn State fan), and they began the dark years with a win in 1999 at Beaver Stadium. But I think in 2009 Iowa will handle the F0 Cyclones with no problem.
yea i think we will win with no problem, but that game allways scares me. lmao that wont change after what i saw in 02 with brad banks dallas clark bob sanders fred russle and robert gallery and that was the only game that kept us out of the national championship. even though we got killed in the orange bowl by usc it would have been nice to get second place lol. but iowa state wont even give us a ticket for the game up there with out buying season tickets from them. its ridiculous.
I still don't know how Iowa lost to Iowa State in 2002. Iowa looked like the best team in the Big 10 that year based on winning more impressively overall than Ohio State (for example Iowa beat Northwestern 62-10 while Ohio State beat them 27-16 and Iowa beat Minnesota on the road as impressively as Ohio State did at home). As far as USC goes, I think they could have beaten Ohio State or Miami that year based on their Orange Bowl performance (that Iowa team also could have beat Miami or OSU).
Great video. Hawkeye fan here, but it was a great game played by both teams. I must admit, I was pulling for you guys in the Rose Bowl. Seriously though, great video.
Given the wind, I think it would have been best to have the punter walk out the back of the end zone on a fake punt for a deliberate safety early on, that would have given them 2 but we would have kicked off from the 35, and not the 1. That's one of many things I'd have done different.
the only loss of the season is always tough but this one was even more tough to swallow. we played aweful in the red zone all day. before the last iowa TD we dropped a pick. and d-will was open on the int across the middle and clark overthrew him. but still hell of a season boys. when all we heard @ the beginning of the year was OSU OSU OSU blah blah blah. this season will be a huge building block for a future nat'l champ. WE ARE.......PENN STATE
Bad redzone playcallin is what did it. If we wanted to, we could have gone into Kinnick and smashed them. At least this wasn't 1999 Minnesota all over again though.
I've read a lot of really dumb posts on Youtube, but this has to take the cake. You do realize you are saying PSU didn't want to win this game, right? The refs handed you two terrible calls (that fumble should have been an Iowa TD, and the punter wasn't touched) and you still lost.
So my post is the dumbest you've ever read because it disagrees with you? Perhaps you'd better forget the hyperbolic humor that's about as funny as stepping on a rusty nail and reread the post. What I said was although Penn State wanted to win, they played flat. If you honestly believe that Penn State was playing a good game for them against Iowa, then that's the only PSU game you watched. And that "fumble that should have been an Iowa TD" became one anyway two plays later, so who cares?
And actually, that fumble should have been a safety, giving you only two points, not six. That may have changed the game had it been called correctly. The roughing the punter one I'll give that to you. Had Penn State played to their capabilities, they'd have won the game and by a large margin, too. That and the Indiana game were the worst I'd seen Penn State play all year.
The first three quarters were as poorly as the Iowa offense played all year. If Iowa's offense had shown up earlier in the game it wouldn't have even been close. Bottom line, Iowa won the game, even if PSU "wanted" to lose.
Iowa's offense was pretty much bottled up for three quarters, but Penn State played horribly. I don't think they wanted to lose, they just played like they expected Iowa to just roll over and let them score style points left and right. But late in the 4th quarter, the wheels came off Penn State's flimsy gameplan thanks to a "for want of a nail" type of progression, beginning with a holding penalty that negated a 2nd and 1 conversion.
what are you saying if we where number 2 we would beat the number one team becasue WE ARE PENN STATE WE ARE PENN STATE WOOOOO WOOOOO OOO OOO OO. WE ARE PENN STATE. it sucks we lost is hars conditons like wiind very cold weather no heaters like iowa had. dont get me wrong we didnt play that good but heaers had and affect.

@Workin0nit umm personally i think it's strange. I feel like once you find a uniform that fits you should keep it. A lot of my favorite teams have had their uniforms for a long time because they work. But again this is just one persons opinion.

As far as I'm concerned, the Rose Bowl that year was the true national championship and the 2008 Lions were national championship runner-ups.

geoffds 7 months ago
@geoffds Well, to be fair, 2003, 2004, and 2010 weren't that surprising because PSU was awful those years, as in Syracuse under Greg Robinson awful, 2002 and 2009 weren't surprising in retrospect because Iowa had dynamite teams those years, but 2008 was a shocker. Kirk Ferentz seems to be outcoaching Joe Paterno like Glen Mason repeatedly did, although IMO Mason was even more impressive because Ferentz gets more star players than Mason did. Even when PSU beat Minnesota under Mason, it was close.
MVillani1985 6 months ago
Good video. Kinda funny that the most dramatic moment... the game winning field goal was played as the video faded out. But then, this is a PSU-made video. Although for the sake of journalism and good drama... the FG should have been emphasized. It was after all the happy ending. ;)
ignatiusreilly1994 1 year ago

He caught it on his fingertips and I simply had to stand up, decked out in full Hawkeye attire, applaud him and yell out: "Hell of a catch Bobby." Such an underrated receiver.
mongoose704 1 year ago

Is there any other reason you think Penn State will slip so much?
mongoose704 1 year ago
As you said, our 2009 team was pretty good. And if Wagner made that long FG in the Iowa game and they made some ST stops of Ohio State's Ray Small, PSU might have been unbeaten, so if you're a lot like our 2009 team, that's really nothing to worry about. What worries me about the 2010 team of Penn State's is that the Nittany Lions are relying on a so far unimpressive quarterback Kevin Newsome, we lose most of our front seven, especially the most talented members, and we also lose a good corner.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
I do have to say, regarding MOV, was despite the fact that we had an awful defense in 1994...
that Penn State team that killed us that year was simply incredible.
We had a damn good team this year. We were a lot like your 1987 NT team though. We play an opportunistic bend don't break D and made timely plays on offense and special teams. Statistically we weren't dominant but we kept opposing teams scores low
mongoose704 1 year ago
That Penn State team in 1994 certainly was an amazing team, the best team to be ripped off as far as the NC goes. Completely agree about the parallels between the 1986 Nittany Lions and the 2009 Hawkeyes, I kept saying that all year. Had Stanzi not been injured, you would have beaten both Northwestern and Ohio State and possibly advanced to the national championship game, or at the very least, the Rose Bowl to take on the Oregon Ducks. I believe that Iowa could have beaten Texas or Alabama.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
Glad to see I'm not the only one who saw that similarity between the 86 Lions and 09 Hawks teams. The only differences I know of, besides the national title, is we probably had a better QB and you had a better RB in DJ Dozier.
mongoose704 1 year ago

The 09 Hawkeyes are the model Ferentz team and likely one that made Paterno smile outside of that 21-10 affair.
mongoose704 1 year ago
This will not soothe any bitterness about that year but knowing what we know of Tom Osborne, he likely felt robbed as well. He would have preferred to settle it on the field with the winner take all. A winner, a loser, no tie.
Finally we the fans were robbed of a great matchup.
mongoose704 1 year ago
Unfortunately, he had no reason to feel robbed, because Penn State was not even granted a dual national championship, which is all Nittany Lions fans would have needed to feel like we got our due. But they looked for any excuse to drop us, and so they used a not as close as the score game against a good Indiana team that had Trent Green at QB as their reason. But I agree, that would have been an awesome matchup. I say Penn State would have won that one by a score like 28-21.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
I am not trying to diminish your robbery in any way shape or form. Certainly he wasn't as robbed as the 1994 Penn State team was. But knowing Tom Osborne he would have preferred no controversy and would have preferred to give his kids the challenge of that Penn State team with only one winner. Just like he refused to accept the tie vs Miami in the 1984 Orange Bowl and a CERTAIN TITLE, he wanted one winner and one loser. Yeah he was robbed of a chance to win it legitimately vs those Lions.
mongoose704 1 year ago

We were all robbed
mongoose704 1 year ago
The most intriguing matchup would be Nebraska's defensive line vs the Penn State offensive line (which is simply the best O-LIne I have seen in the Big Ten in my lifetime.)
To be honest though I would favor the 94 Nebraska team. Your defense was questionable that year and that offense moved the ball well against Sapp, Lewis and that Miami defense in that year's Orange Bowl.

mongoose704 1 year ago
Well, to be fair, although Penn State's defense wasn't as good as the 1986 defense, it was pretty underrated, because I remember Penn State would get a huge lead, say 45-10 at halftime, and then the backup defense would give up some touchdowns to finish with a score like 59-31, which made the defense look worse than it really was. However, I think the Huskers' defense that year was really good, even better than the underrated Oregon "Gang Green" defense that year that shut down most everyone.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
The 1995 Huskers are probably the best team I'd ever seen in my lifetime, with a real balance of offense, defense, and special teams. Beating Florida 62-24 in a national championship game was enough of a one-sided rout that we wouldn't see a NC blowout of that magnitude until the 2004 Trojans pounded Oklahoma 55-19 in either the Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl (I know it was 48-10 after three, so USC went pretty easy on the Sooners at the end). Like that game, even the backups scored against Florida.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
Joe Pa or KF would have gone to protective formations.
mongoose704 1 year ago
To be honest, by the way the Florida team played, I bet the 1995 Nittany Lions could have given them a better game. Not saying the 1995 Lions would've won, but I think it'd have been more like a 42-14 game, which is hardly anything that could be remotely called a good game, but it'd have looked a lot better than what Florida did. If you remember, that Penn State team crushed #16 Auburn 43-14 in the Outback Bowl, and it wasn't even that close, it was 43-7 after three.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
Agreed. You would have given them a better game due to superior coaching.
mongoose704 1 year ago
I haven't seen Iowa dominate too much at the line of scrimmage in most recent games except in the fourth quarter of 2009 when Penn State had all the piss knocked out of them from that interception and that let Iowa put it out of reach with a field goal. However, Iowa did a great job overall in 2002 against a great Nittany Lions team (the only year of the dark years we didn't suck) and that was mostly because Iowa of 2002 was one of the best Big 10 teams of the 2000s, I'd put them in the top 10.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
We've dominated, especially on the defensive line. We absolutely beat the piss out of Zach Mills and harassed Daryl Clark two years in a row.
We protect our QBs and harass yours.
mongoose704 1 year ago
In 2008, other than that first drive, you didn't really do much to Darryl Clark, and Penn State recorded more sacks on Stanzi than Iowa did on Clark. If you rememer, Penn State had a huge TOP advantage and other than two drives, dominated Iowa at the line of scrimmage. However, I know you're not mostly referring to 2008. However, I'd say outside of 2007 and 2008, you did dominate at the line of scrimmage.

iowa's national pastimes are hawkeye football, wrestling, drinking, and ruining penn states and northwestern's seasons. yup, we have five.
wesleyt105 1 year ago
Northwestern ruins your seasons actually, if you're talking football. Penn State in 2000-2004 wasn't really all that good except 2002 (but you were out of this world good that year) so I wouldn't really brag about those seasons, they were ruined long before Iowa simply added another log into the fire. 2008 was probably your best foil of our season, I don't consider 2009 a true upset because you were 10 points away from playing for the national title. You were just simply better than us in 2009.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
Oh I wouldn't say Northwestern ruined the season of the Orange Bowl Champion Iowa Hawkeyes.
The point is that they seem to play the style to beat us.
We play the style that beats you.
mongoose704 1 year ago
I think what happens with Penn State-Iowa is that Joe Paterno does the same thing against Kirk Ferentz that he did against Lloyd Carr. It's almost like he wants to beat Ferentz at his own game, if you notice, there wasn't much of the Spread HD offense in the games against Iowa. The only reason that Penn State won in 2007, and by a blowout no less, is because JoePa realized that an 0-3 hole would be impossible to climb out of. I think if PSU played their own game, it'd be more back and forth.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
I've made the same observation. I've noticed that Joe Pa, in big game,s seems to let it loose until he gets a lead and then gets very conservative. Now conservative isn't a dirty word in my book and it has obviously worked for Joe Pa for decades....
but that style of game is right up our alley. We like to keep it close and then force a big turnover or make a big play on special teams.
mongoose704 1 year ago
That's exactly what's hurt PSU against Lloyd Carr's Michigan and now Kirk Ferentz's Iowa team. Penn State tends to play conservative in big games, and although that works for us against Jim Tressel (like in 2001, 2005, and 2008, and it almost worked in 2009 except our special teams failed us, also almost worked in 2006). I wouldn't even go so far to say a "big lead", I think he likes to just get any lead whatsoever and nurse that lead, thankfully he stopped against Michigan State after 2007.

MVillani1985 2 years ago
The 90s? 1-4 but we were underdogs in every game and beat you in 96 in Happy Valley when you were top ten.
mongoose704 1 year ago
Admit it: Every team, no matter how good, has a perfect foil. Usually due to the style of play and the schemes. The Hawkeyes under Ferentz are yours. One commonality though is we have dominated the line of scrimmage.
Northwestern is starting to become quite a foil for us.
mongoose704 1 year ago

Awful conditions actually favor Penn State as they play a more fundamentally conservative game than we do.
mongoose704 1 year ago
I don't really have a clue why we would have been favored in a year like 2000 when Toledo absolutely beat the crap out of us and we were humiliated 45-7 by an Ohio State team that wasn't even that good. In 2002, you were only unranked because of lack of prestige at the time, but that huge 2002 year really looked to change that. If you remember, you were late in the season ranked #3 and finished Big 10 cochampions with Ohio State, so I wouldn't put much stock in your underdog status in 2002.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
And in the 90s, only one time did you beat a HAwkeye team with a winning record and that was when we were in the middle of a four game losing streak in 1995.
mongoose704 1 year ago
I think the most impressive thing about Penn State's 90s wins over Iowa is the margin of victory. However, I'd say that Iowa upsetting a Penn State team that was one of the best Big 10 teams of the 90s that ultimately kept them from a 3 way conference title tie, especially in Beaver Stadium, was certainly impressive. I think what's really amazing is that most close games go Iowa's way, and that goes back to what I said, the Hawks seem to be better at keeping their focus in inclement weather.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
The most impressive thing abut Iowa's decade of dominance over Penn State is the fact that we were underdogs in most of the games.
mongoose704 1 year ago
The only games that I'd call Iowa a true underdog (I know, hindsight is 20-20, but perception is not everything, and Iowa was disrespected most of those times) were in 2007 and 2008, maybe 2000. Because, for example, would you really say that the 2002 Penn State team, that finished 9-4 (5-3) and lost the Capital One Bowl was better than the 11-2 (8-0) Orange Bowl team that played USC close for the first three quarters? However, 2008 was certainly a big upset for Iowa that helped set up 2009.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
Like you said, hindsight. Yeah 2008 was definitely a huge upset. I don't argue that any other of those games were BIG upsets. 2002 I would call even enough and you had it at home. We were a better team at the end of that season than the beginning. That Orange Bowl ticked me off. We were flagged for five offsides in the 2nd quarter after we already made three sacks. Prior to the game the refs made it clear they were going to protect the QBs. It hurt us more because Banks was mobile.
mongoose704 1 year ago
More importantly about the refs decision was our defensive line was our strength and we knocked out 9 quarterbacks that year. Banks never had to worry about being sacked with his mobility. Basically the refs took away our strength. Rarely do I blame the refs for a game but the way they called it helped USC out a great deal. We didn't get another sack after all those egregious flags. All of them were piddly to flat out terrible calls. But they had to protect the prize QB
mongoose704 1 year ago
I completely agree about that Orange Bowl. There are very few games that I actually say were crooked, but that one was sure one of them. Another was in 2005 PSU vs Michigan (and ironically later on, Michigan got robbed in the Alamo Bowl). I think that Iowa was a better team than USC that year, because if you remember, USC couldn't do anything on offense until late in the third quarter once the Iowa defense had been messed with enough by the refs that it altered the gameplay.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
That game in 1984 didn't quite set a visitor score record in State College, that dubious honor goes to Lehigh's 106-0 win on the lawn of Old Main (although that's when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), but with Penn State as more of an unofficial home team in the kickoff classic, Nebraska beat Penn State 44-6. That game you refer to was a shootout 42-34, more an oddity. 2008 you were true underdogs, but 2009 I don't get why Iowa was unranked (you guys turned out to be great and us just okay).
MVillani1985 1 year ago
Nebraska beat Penn State in East Rutherford and most people realize that I most clearly said a record in Happy Valley which is most decidedly not East Rutherford NJ.
mongoose704 1 year ago
Well then, that only leaves the game in Happy Valley against Lehigh in 1889 or 1890 where we lost 0-106.
MVillani1985 1 year ago
last time i checked were 4-0 and you are 3-1 and last year we let you guys get to the rose bowl somehow and you got embarrassed by USC...... haha and we won the only big ten bowl game.

Thats pathetic.
Iowa is a joke.
Barnhart24 2 years ago
I like it when the fans of the losing team refer to the winning team as a "nobody" team. The goal in football is to win. Iowa has done that 8 of the last 9 outings against Penn State. So if Iowa is a "nobody" team, what does that make the repeatedly losing team?
Iowa has been the better team, and Penn State was overrated. Pretty simple. Any doubts, read the score board.

the game im most worried about for psu is not iowa or osu but rather illinois for 3 reasons.. 1. its on the road and 2. i thought we would dominate them last year and they played very well and couldve even won that game with a few breaks here and there and 3. wed be coming off an emotional win vs iowa the week before... juice benn and dufrene are scary and that game scares me
cyrizzle87 2 years ago
Even though Illinois hung around for three quarters, Penn State took control of that game from the second quarter onward, so I'm not too worried about that one. I predict that Illinois will surprisingly implode like in 2003. The game that worries me is at Michigan State. Northwestern also concerns me a bit.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
illinois has too much talent to do that bad.. they will win at least 4 games and i think theyll win 8-9.. nw doesnt worry me that much simply bc they dont have the athleticism to compete with us for two halves.. now mich st maybe if and if were undefeated better not be cuz that would put a dagger in our program.. however i think them losing ringer will hurt a bit but theyll be better on d.. im worried a lil but not a lot about that game
cyrizzle87 2 years ago
One thing I'm going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction about is the general prediction that Ohio State will win the conference. I have a feeling they'll go 8-4 (5-3) and lose in Beaver Stadium by two touchdowns or better.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
I meant to say "One thing I'm going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction about is the general prediction that Ohio State will win the conference is wrong". Ohio State will finish 4th or 5th in conference.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
Even though this video is a highlight video of a game Penn State lost, this has to be one of my favorite highlight videos because of how well made it was. It showed the highlights of both teams and gave better pictures of their drives than the other highlight videos. Also, the music is a little too perfect for the mood. Including the dreamlike, slightly sad music at the end. It also shows that although Penn State dominated the game, some bad luck did them in, and how things don't always work.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
Wow this sucks to watch. PSU dominated the whole game except in the score like the vid said. Cant wait for next year when Iowa comes to happy valley
Runner3546 2 years ago
I think what did us in was that series of penalties at 2nd and 1 within field goal range near the end of the game. Without those penalties, the game would have been 30-21 and out of reach.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
can't wait til Iowa gets thrashed in Beaver Stadium this year.
SASnyder122 2 years ago
Like they have the last few times?
PantherState 2 years ago
In 2007, Penn State beat Iowa 27-7, and it wasn't as close as the score, the lone Iowa touchdown was from an interception at Penn State's own end zone. That game was never in doubt. I think Iowa had something like two first downs and eight total yards all game.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
iowa for big ten champs. we'll show joe pa how to win a rose bowl.
supersamurai563 2 years ago
While I do think Iowa will be good next year, the loss of Shonn Greene will put a huge damper on your offense. I predict Penn State to repeat as Big 10 champs in 2009, and Iowa will probably finish 10-2.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
i agree that iowa will have a big hole to fill up on greene but we probably will finish 10-2 but u never know once the season starts.
supersamurai563 2 years ago
10-2 is my prediction for Iowa, too. I think the Hawkeyes lose at Beaver Stadium and at East Lansing, but finishes undefeated at home and beats the Buckeyes pretty convincingly on the road. I have Iowa picked to finish 2nd in the conference after Penn State (who I think will go 12-0 and 8-0 in conference play), then Michigan State, then Ohio State will finish 4th. It'll be a weird year with neither Ohio State or Michigan finishing in the top 3 of the conference.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
i have to disagree, shonn greene wont be a HUGE loss, we have hampton and the guy behind him. i dont remember his name but i think it started with a D. but anyway, 10-2 is a good prediction BUT the year after next year we are going to be amazingly good. our d-fence is going to be great next year and the year after that
HereComeTheHawkeyes 2 years ago 2
I think your tandem of Jewell Hampton and Paki O'Meara will make a great combination, and together might be able to do the work of Shonn Greene. Kind of like how when Tony Hunt graduated from PSU after 2006, a combo of Royster and Kinlaw worked pretty good in 2007.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
well pakies not great we have a guy that i belive is coming in as a freshman who is great. but i might be wrong about pakie, but last year he didnt do great
HereComeTheHawkeyes 2 years ago
If I remember right, Paki was the starter before Shonn Greene ran all over Maine. I expect a huge improvement from Paki but I think Hamptom will be the main running back. Your incoming freshman could be amazing like Stephon Green was for Penn State last year.
Anyways, about Ohio State, I expect Iowa to win solidly but pull away huge late to make it look like a rout. Maybe something like 35-14.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
yea that would be nice. i dont see ohio state being a problem. the only thing is playing up there. that place is crazy
HereComeTheHawkeyes 2 years ago
I think the best way for Iowa to get a nice win there is to take the crowd out early. I picture Iowa taking a lead early enough to take the crowd out of it. And Ohio State sholdn't be much trouble since all of their skill players except Pryor graduated (and if you remember, Pryor always struggled against stout defenses like Penn State and USC).
MVillani1985 2 years ago 2
I think in 2010 it'll be a battle between Iowa and Ohio State for Big Ten supremacy. I see Ohio State in 2009 losing to USC, Penn State, Iowa, and someone else. I'm not sure who I think Iowa's second loss will be to, but I know one will be Penn State (according to the spring practice results, the Penn State defense is downright SCARY), the other may be a "WTF" loss.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
yea it would be nice to beat ohio state for once, lmao. but with us early in the season you never know how things are going to go, the iowa state game in my eyes is the scariest game of the year. thats their only game that counts.
HereComeTheHawkeyes 2 years ago 2
I noticed that for you guys Iowa State is like how Minnesota is for us, a perpetual thorn in the side. For example, PSU finished Big 10 #2 in 1997 but barely beat a 3-9 Minnesota 16-15, beat Minnesota in 2006 only because of a penalty that really was a bad call (even though I'm a Penn State fan), and they began the dark years with a win in 1999 at Beaver Stadium. But I think in 2009 Iowa will handle the F0 Cyclones with no problem.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
yea i think we will win with no problem, but that game allways scares me. lmao that wont change after what i saw in 02 with brad banks dallas clark bob sanders fred russle and robert gallery and that was the only game that kept us out of the national championship. even though we got killed in the orange bowl by usc it would have been nice to get second place lol. but iowa state wont even give us a ticket for the game up there with out buying season tickets from them. its ridiculous.
HereComeTheHawkeyes 2 years ago
I still don't know how Iowa lost to Iowa State in 2002. Iowa looked like the best team in the Big 10 that year based on winning more impressively overall than Ohio State (for example Iowa beat Northwestern 62-10 while Ohio State beat them 27-16 and Iowa beat Minnesota on the road as impressively as Ohio State did at home). As far as USC goes, I think they could have beaten Ohio State or Miami that year based on their Orange Bowl performance (that Iowa team also could have beat Miami or OSU).
MVillani1985 2 years ago

Given the wind, I think it would have been best to have the punter walk out the back of the end zone on a fake punt for a deliberate safety early on, that would have given them 2 but we would have kicked off from the 35, and not the 1. That's one of many things I'd have done different.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
the only loss of the season is always tough but this one was even more tough to swallow. we played aweful in the red zone all day. before the last iowa TD we dropped a pick. and d-will was open on the int across the middle and clark overthrew him. but still hell of a season boys. when all we heard @ the beginning of the year was OSU OSU OSU blah blah blah. this season will be a huge building block for a future nat'l champ. WE ARE.......PENN STATE
ajfkrm 3 years ago
Bad redzone playcallin is what did it. If we wanted to, we could have gone into Kinnick and smashed them. At least this wasn't 1999 Minnesota all over again though.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
I've read a lot of really dumb posts on Youtube, but this has to take the cake. You do realize you are saying PSU didn't want to win this game, right? The refs handed you two terrible calls (that fumble should have been an Iowa TD, and the punter wasn't touched) and you still lost.
PantherState 2 years ago
So my post is the dumbest you've ever read because it disagrees with you? Perhaps you'd better forget the hyperbolic humor that's about as funny as stepping on a rusty nail and reread the post. What I said was although Penn State wanted to win, they played flat. If you honestly believe that Penn State was playing a good game for them against Iowa, then that's the only PSU game you watched. And that "fumble that should have been an Iowa TD" became one anyway two plays later, so who cares?
MVillani1985 2 years ago
And actually, that fumble should have been a safety, giving you only two points, not six. That may have changed the game had it been called correctly. The roughing the punter one I'll give that to you. Had Penn State played to their capabilities, they'd have won the game and by a large margin, too. That and the Indiana game were the worst I'd seen Penn State play all year.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
The first three quarters were as poorly as the Iowa offense played all year. If Iowa's offense had shown up earlier in the game it wouldn't have even been close. Bottom line, Iowa won the game, even if PSU "wanted" to lose.
PantherState 2 years ago
Iowa's offense was pretty much bottled up for three quarters, but Penn State played horribly. I don't think they wanted to lose, they just played like they expected Iowa to just roll over and let them score style points left and right. But late in the 4th quarter, the wheels came off Penn State's flimsy gameplan thanks to a "for want of a nail" type of progression, beginning with a holding penalty that negated a 2nd and 1 conversion.
