I feel I have to respond to this song somehow, it seems for me, one of the best songs of love ever recorded, how the turning of the sun can sometimes change our lives forever. You live a life and then a chance meeting rips up and discards it. How an unstoppable force such as love can change our fife forever. It's true, I'm in it's thrall.
Love the short version of this, but this extended re-mix is even better, just brilliant, its so sad they wont perform now and again. I went to Hyde park last summer for the ABBA Celebration, Bjorn and Benny where there, and i think the whole audience secretly wished & hoped Agnetta and Annefrid, would make an appearance, and maybe sing together one more time. How many people out there wish they would give maybe just one last performance together?
it was about 3 months ago that i view this and today i visit here again to say something, after listening to this song about thousand times on my mp3 ,i realized that this song is based actually on agnethas relation to Benny, on about their lovelife ,the song the winner takes it all ,i feel is related also to them, try to hear the song i do i do i do ,seems the beginning of their love affair.
My favourite ABBA track. I didn't know there was a rainy day remix though! The original song with video in widescreen was on here but it's been taken down :(
my sentiments also, at one time this song was voted the greatest Abba recording ever.I have to say it is definitely up there among the best, awesome songwriting and singing........as usual!!!
If you believe in God, whatever name He may be given by your priests and your enemies, you know He endowed Man with poetry, physics, literature, mathematics, music, painting and all earthly arts and sciences to create beauty and reach truth and eternity in heaven and in hell.
And if you don’t, you can still name “God” those talents of the gifted ones. And smile and sigh and laugh and cry.
Great mix job,, and great video. I agree this is one of Abba's very best songs, but not well known except to ABBAites. , The lyrics are so deadpan, capturing that Swedish existential ennui. and her vocal is so perfect.
Something that happens that is momentous has great depth - its not just surface elation - this depth is conveyed in the music - it was so great she can't remember the trite events of the day before. The intense emotion of the music is combined with the extremely funny lyrics and the wonderful way in which the humour is worked in with it makes it all the more facinating and compelling and adds to the wonderful emotional range of the piece.
i think its because she wanted him so much and thought of him, but still had to wait until she got him.. Bit like trying to pluck up the courage to talk to him, or waiting for him to talk to her..
@ CARACARINA1005. ACTUALLY ITS NOT AGNETHAS LIFE,ITS THE COMPOSERS ARTISTRY, U SEE YOU JUST GOT CARRIED AWAY WITH THE SONG, WHICH MADE IT GREAT. I AGREE THIS GROUP IS THE BEST IN THE PLANET. GREAT!
So hauntingly exquisite. It matters not the lyrics nor the sense of the plot. This is so epic with the storm clouds and darkness setting the scene for a great sense of longing. That drum beat is superb. The voices take my breath away. This long version is a gem for those who crave the pearls emotion that ABBA were able to evoke. Thanks.
She is telling us about her mundane life before she met this guy. I think it was only a short affair as he was married. This is what make the song so sad as the meeting was doomed from the start. That's what I think the it's about.
Even though I realize the greatness of Abba, they have never been among my absolute favourites. But this song is a big exception! It's simply fabulous, and I love the music and the melancholy text.
This is fantastic! How did you make this (which editor and sound) I have to find out and have a new hobbie to mix sounds like this. I love it!! Thanx for posting!
Hi Pollyanna ... The beauty of this song just makes you wonder about the songs that "could've been" if B&B hadn't QUIT and abandoned us, their fans. They had enough songs in '82 to put out a 9th album, but they chose fame, glory, and legacy instead. [They've been coasting ever since.] Hope you visit my channel and "create Abba's 9th album". If B&B won't finish it, maybe we YouTubers can. Let's raise a voice to B & B to FINISH WHAT THEY START. They owe us that. Ivy Smith (Ohio, USA)
Interesting. Some may wonder who the man running to catch the train was? Just a man. Just a Jehovah's witness...an American it seems...working in...?Norway for the summer...taking a course. He was very nice. He died. I'm not sure exactly when? Within a week or a month or maybe a year. In the US. I heard it was an explosion...maybe a car...maybe a house...not necessarily in Oklahoma...rite? There was one fingerprint on a plate.
Absolutely beautiful ! This song is probably one of the most emotional songs ABBA ever did except for The winner takes it all. And Agnetha sings this one just as perfect.
I first heard this piece maybe two years ago. I never knew it existed. Aggie is at her most beautiful, and as always her voice is superb. The more I view it the more impressed I become. many nuances that can be interpreted many ways. I have feeling that this was written for a special purpose. I am glad that I see I am not the only person fascinated by it.
This song plus video is absolutely great! I am fed up with all the popular ABBA songs and prefer to hear this one. But I don't really understand why this song is so sad! As far as I understand it (English is not my native language) she finally found her love (on the next day)! So where is the problem? Can someone please explain this to me? Thank you!
@caracarina1005: The thing is, this song describes how boring her life was BEFORE she met her love AFTER she lost that love. Her life is now back to where it was before he came. It is not explicitly said but a very common interpretation...
I don't think she is describing how boring her life was perhaps she describes a life she always wanted and was very happy because it was the life she always wanted. I think she is describing her discovery that the situation that she found herself in was far more significant and profound than she ever imagined. The music reflects a lack of fulfillment but a great desire to express her feelings and bring closure to what ever she is feeling, confusion anticipation.
@SpinelessPollyanna Well I think this is open to interpretation. As we can see in the vid, "that guy" missed her train - meaning it is just a day dream - or is it? I interpret this song as being about hope to get out of the day-by-day treadmill and the hope to find "the right one". The last songs recorded by ABBA still show all signs of wonderful musicianship, lyrics and impeccable production.
@aihoschema he was a JW. He was blown up while Frida & Interpol was looking for Aggie. This song is about missing persons. All relatives should do the same when searching for missing persons. A photo showed a new employee which lead to a dead Aggie in a shed. Frida sung Aggie for oh so long before finally letting go.
@caracarina1005 It is sad cause Aggie was missing. Frida sung as Aggie to let her know, she was looking for her. Frida took a camera & followed Aggie's last day. All people missing a loved 1 should do the same. 1 photo showed a new employee. That was the lead that lead to a shed where Aggie's body was found by Interpol. Frida cont'd singing as Aggie to confuse inheritors for the sake of Abbie's only child, a girl. The rest is gossip according to reporters.
@caracarina1005 think it's a sad song because when you are in love you don't give a damn what you did BEFORE. Instead when you had lost it you START to remember how your life was before you melt the significant other, and question yourself "How did i get to this".
@caracarina1005 Something that happens that is momentous has great depth - its not just surface elation - this depth is conveyed in the music - it was so great she can't remember the trite events of the day before. The intense emotion of the music is combined with the extremely funny lyrics and the wonderful way in which the humour is worked in with it makes it all the more facinating and compelling and adds to the wonderful emotional range of the piece.
A great song with a great Lady singing it, This artist & song has so much sentmental value to me and many fond memories of someone i have just lost in my life,May she R.I.P.
Keep up the goodwork and "Thank you" for posting it.
It was a Paradise, a sad Paradise, but still a Paradise for me in 1980-s because I was young .And ABBA brings me back to that Paradise at least for several minutes of their music. ABBA was very popular those years in Russia, but this song I first heard later and love it so much...Spasibo Agnetta, dai Bog vam zdoroviya i vsego nailuchshego.
It was definitely the last song they recorded together, according to Michael Trewin their sound engineer for years. They were going to record more but just couldn't take the strain of working together. what a loss for us all! It was recorded on aAgust 20th 1982.
This song has a kind of sadness, yearning, uncertainty and yet wanted to break away from a stifled past without aim or purpose -- reminds me of the days of cold war
Izuzetno dobar video i mnogo mi se dopada.Samo danas sam ga poslusao preko 50 puta.Agneta je jedna predivna zena, neverovatno sexi i ne verujem da ce svet imati pevacicu sa ovakvim glasovnim sposobnostima u buducnosti.Srecan sam sto sam ziveo u vremenu kada je harala po svetskim top listama.Spineleespollyanna hvala ti za predivan video.Vojvodina :-)
This is really something! Wonderful atmospheric music! The video shows the Stockholm area on Tuesday, September 21, 1982 - nature preparing to color up for a beautiful Indian Summer, as seen from the helicopter above the train, crossing few of many bridges in the Swedish capital, I became so much familiar with since July 1976 - my beloved Stockholm on the edge of a forthcoming mid-Scandinavian winter, days getting shorter, sweet melancholy in the crisp clear air - Thank you ABBA to meet you then
...remember when i walked south on hornsgatan and saw this majestic railroadbridge crossing arstaviken...meanwhile progress goes on and the new viaduct was inagurated...but the scenery hasn't lost anything of its magic.
Beautiful version and this song which is ringing in my ears at the moment as some-one has come into my life..."I had no sense of living without aim, the day before you came"...
For me is this one of the best ABBA Songs. But i think it's finally an Agnetha-Song. Same as "My Love, My Live". Also more an Agnetha-Ballade. By this songs the other tree members are only supernumaries.
This is a magic version! No extra beats just the original sound. I love it!! And when I liten to this on my MP3 it makes me sad and Happy! Thank you for this MASTERPIECE. MartinZ
captures the brooding unambiguity of the original - it appears that the YOU has died - she is before his open coffin or grave or photograph , lamenting with bitter sweet memories -
Could this song even get better? Apparently so great remix mate...this song is the quintessential 80s euro love song, its so sophisticated and sensual....And this was like 4 yrs before the Pet Shop Boys.Love it.

Now this is excellent...very clever. Could you do something similar with Vivaldi's Gloria (played at the end of the film The Runaway Train)

There were a lot of rumors about the end of Abba in 1982. When i saw this vid in 82 i felt a deep saddness.

For me is this one of the best ABBA Songs. But i think it's finally an Agnetha-Song. Same as "My Love, My Live". Also more an Agnetha-Ballade. By this songs the other tree members are only supernumaries.

Well, the song wouldn't be the same without Frida's opera-like backing-vocals. All members had their input in this song.

I would like to have seen her lighting up her 7th cigarette!

if she is a typical smoker it would actually be her 14 th or so, they all including me tend to underestimate how many they smoke
persilbran 2 years ago
This song was written at what is sometimes ironically referred to as 'the fag end of their career'! I so much want to see her light up!

captures the brooding unambiguity of the original - it appears that the YOU has died - she is before his open coffin or grave or photograph , lamenting with bitter sweet memories -

excelent - and well done in dealing with how out of time the drummer is so seamlessly!
wish abba would do an album of authorised remxies at this point - and yours deserves inclusion

It's really their last song, sung by Agnetha only. At that period of
