It's originally a novel, where the gay thing is a lot more than an undertone joke-ish thing.

Yuuri's just retarded and from conservative Japan (though he has the most open minded mother ever? o.o xD) and is trying very hard not to be gay, but it quite obviously into Wolfram. (even more prominent in said novel xD)
