I expect the government to buy air-conditioners for a cold year and pay twice what they are worth, just like they did for the swine flu. You can make the "at least someone acted" argument for every government screw up. BMW's Gershwin, Bach, and Beethoven are all great things Germany created before things like "free" healthcare robbed them of their incentives.

You know who's doing best in Europe? Norway. They have one of the most leftwinged governments in Europe. Taxes for top earners are something like 45%. They have no debt (they stayed out of the € project). People work 35h a week and they have a good social net. Good ecucation system as well.

Waste, fraud, abuse, cronyism, lobbying for favors, THAT'S what the government does well! Let the market decide who we buy insurance from, what is covered, where we get our meds, and protect the industry from ridiculous law suits that I have to pay for. End result, affordable insurance.
