  • I'm right in the middle of switching the live rear in a 2000 MustangGT to a 2003 Cobra IRS. Next will be the 32 valve quad cam aluminum block V8 we got out of a Lincoln and then the BorgT56 six-speed to complete the Cobra. We got the Maximum Motorsports race kit for the rear end and are very pleased with the parts and the tools provided.

  • @zapwatt : Very cool!

  • Theres a kit you can get for the mustang for the IRS. Its cool to see that so many people like my ride. I forget the name of the site that sells the cobra irs conversions into the 67 mustangs but they do make a kit. I've looked at it and if you got the time its likely better to make your own out of thicker steel.

  • hi i have a 67 mustang which i believe shares some part of the same chassis with the meteor. i have the old Irs out of my 03 cobra. id also like to eliminate the leaf springs and install the Irs. what would i need to do? can you give me some pointers. or what ill need. thanks and keep up the great work.

    CESAR-

  • Hi Cesar,

You can start by checking out DVS Restorations:

They make a kit to put this IRS in your year Mustang. They do it a bit differently from the way I did it. They use a coil-over shock.

I actually looked into using their kit, but the rear subframe of the Meteor is quite different from the early Mustang one, so I couldn't do that.

    Good luck on your project!

  • Musting-style hydroboost setup...why didn't I think of that. I can see why you went with that choice. The shock towers really prevent anyone from installing a vacuum booster properly. Thanks for the details, greatly appreciated.

  • I have a '62 merc meteor that I am in the middle of doing an engine swap. Two questions, what kind of motor do you have and is the brake system stock or exchanged from something else?

  • The motor is a 5.0L roller motor from a Mustang GT (1992 or 1993), which we've carbureted.

As it was shown in the video it has Cobra disc brakes out back and stock Meteor drum brakes up front (I know, it's stupid), with a proportioning valve in between.

We are in the process of putting a Fatman strut kit on the front, and there will be Cobra discs up there as well. We are running a Mustang-style hydroboost setup, too, since that took less space than the equivalent vacuum booster would have.

  • Still has the Meteor "Anti-Harsh" LCA on the front, though.

  • Hey Hey! Looking good!

  • Thanks!

  • great video.. looks like it drives real smooth. good job man!
