The Yucca plant works best to make a hand drill IMO. Thats what the Indians used. It has spiny leaves and one peice of wood that grows in the middle. find a dead one break it off and it works great.
Yes, when I tried it for the first time I had so much blisters that I had to stop it for one week. I had two long aching oval blisters in both hands(I tried it with the wrong wood and too often). After the week I learned it and then I got cornea (practised this kind of firemaking 10 times a day) and had never problems with aching hands.

very awesome !Ive been tryign to do this for years! whats that yellow stuff you use to make the tinder light up and what do you use under your drill that catches the black powder (tinder)? please help me lol
Yes, small smooth wood shreddings and bigger ones on the top. But if you are a beginner I would use some tinder to make it safe that the fire starts. It's not easy with the coaling powder and shredded wood only.
My english isn't good to, I'm from germany. You can use POLYPORUS FOMENTARIUS dried and cut in slices for tinder or charred jeans. Charred jeans or cotton works very well too and is easy to make. Wrap some small jeans parts into aluminium foil and put it on aglow coal, then wait 1 hourn. Don't open it directly, let it cool down!
No, not all poplar species are good to make fire. The lombardy poplar works very very well and is the best from all poplar I know. Populus tremula works not so good, but it works too.
Yeah, it depends on the grain of the wood as well as how hard the wood is. A good medium wood with a mid-size grain is good, allows for slight particles of sawdust to be created during the friction process, which heat and take flame. :)
hey ive started using a cattail reed on a Yucca fire board (flowerstalk of the sotol which is best for the fire plw , so they say) i get smoke, char, but drill right through!
One day you will make it, it's just a question of practice. I never had the chance to make a hand drill fire with yucca, but I would like to try, it looks so easy. With poplar or limba I need a minimum of 10 passes. Nothing for beginners.
Never have been able to get a hand drill fire started, but I have seen a man get one started with a yucca stalk in 3 passes - consistently, the guy was a south Georgia park ranger.

For both I use chipped wood from poplar. To catch the coal I use a very flat splint.
Felippo 3 years ago
ok so i should get dry poplar and chip^it up in a fluffy nest like you, i am trying witha maple drill and a ceder fireboard though i might change it

use a leaf to catch the black powder
McYdys 3 years ago
you just put a dry leaf under and then blow on black powder which wil grow then add some light dry wood shreddings?

Try a thicker cattail on a harder portion of the Yucca and experiment in between.

I didn't get what the fireboard was made of.
What was it?
survivethewild 4 years ago
The board and the drill head are both made of poplar.
Felippo 4 years ago
Awesome, thanks.
I'm gonna try that myself.

Hello mossyslopes
The drill is made of beech tree or spruce and the head is made of limba (Terminalia superba) or poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica').
In the video I use beech tree and limba.
Regards, Felippo

Hello Felippo;
What is your hand drill made from ?, it looks very straight, or are you using an extender with a detachable head ?
mossyslopes 4 years ago
It is made from beech tree and poplar.
