the film is completely fictional and heres why:

1. The original team of track racers never wanted to have a bobsled team

2. The first Jamaican bobsled team consisted of 4 people from the Jamaican army

3. They competed in 5 different events before the Olympics

4. They never finished the race

5. who cares because Jamaica finally got the gold in there third Olympic events so "Pick up the rhythm Pick up the rhyme get on up its bobsled time"

At one hand i understand that it can be a disappointment to read this information and come to learn that the film is not a 100% according to the reality. At the other hand i find it nice how jamaica was made proud in those olympics of '88 and also the film.

@ginarela1 to complete my comment, i find that jamaica and the bobsled team '88 was honoured by the movie cool runnings.

and although they didn't carry the sled, they WALKED on their own(!) to the finish line, they were not carried. and that is very important in the games: one way or the other, you MUST finish your race on your own otherwise your race will be disqualified. That's the main point here.

see... this is what really annoys me about films. They make a film about something that really happened and glamourise it but faking the end and the reason they crashed.

It wasn't a loose bolt like the film portrayed, it was a misjudged corner.

They didnt carry the sled over the finish line to a slow clap by a German sledder, they walked with it, probably bruised and shaken up to hell.

At least have the decency to get the story half right.
