Thank you for posting this, I am the dancer in this clip Carol (formerly Mallett) Rifkin. i still play and dance, there is video of me with Doc Watson and others on my website
why can't more women be down to earth like this lovely lady?? i'm tired of the spoiled-brat american women we have today. just watch "you're cut off!" on vh1. that is what girls aspire to be.
@tacomuybueno Hey! I just want you to know that we're not all "spoiled-brat American women". I'm 15, work for my money, spend only my own-- and I CLOG, thank you very much! ...And I definitely don't aspire to have the life of ANY of those girl...!
@tacomuybueno ...it depends on what part of the USA you are in and us Kentucky girls are just down to earth...that is just we are. Ladies all the way...un spoiled, but we love to dance...
Interesting how the right foot seems to be the "anchor," with the left foot more in the air and more free. From an Irish step dancer's point of view - another form of percussive dancing.
@kessingland Actually it's a common misconception that the Down Home series was made by the BBC - it wasn't. It was made by Pelicula films (who made all the subsequent films that Aly Bain took part in, including the superb Transatlantic Sessions) and it was broadcast on commercial Channel 4, not the BBC. Pelicula films are trying to arrange copyright clearances so that the series can be issued on DVD, see mudcat.org and search for Down Home and you'll see the discussion about this.
@crtUK You're right "crtuk". Looking back I seem to remember watching it on Channel 4 but it was such a while ago in the 80's I think. Thanks for the correction.
@crtUK wow! thank you so much for the heads up, ive been wanting to get this series for a long time but havent been able to find it. any word on pete seegers rainbow quest?
@crtUK@crtUK rainbow quest was a television show that ran in the late 60s. hosted by pete seeger and focusing on folk music, he would interview artists such as june carter & johnny cash, the stanley brothers, sonny terry and brownie mcgee to name a few. it was a magnificent show and clips of it are available here on youtube but i seem to be unable to link. just search for "rainbow quest" and you'll find it.
Please Please can we have lessons here in the UK and in Ireland this is fantastic. Can i get hold of a pair of these shoes for me and my grandaughter and teach myself and my grandaughter this dance from You Tube while we wait for some Flat Footing dance classes to come to South East London as its really such a boaring place this would surely liven people up and get them out and away from tv and games etc. We have to get lessons on this I just love it. where can i get the shoes?
@starsandbars Dixie I'm sure your family were very good dancers too. I did try barefoot with socks but t's not the same, the shoes are an-added bonus, I know that these shoes like all dancing shoes etc are quite expensive so I found 2 pairs of nice tap shoes going cheap for me and my grandaughter and we 'TRY' to do this Flat Footing but it will take us a long time to catch on to this one. :) We love, and enjoy it . HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I guess that works out great then! I didn't think of tap shoes. Flat Footing, whether you're a beginner or expert at it, is fun to do. If you don't have a start, I'm sure you can find instruction on Youtube or search it on Google.
Really any good pair of leather soles will do the trick. Use some "old" dress shoes or maybe the thrift stores etc. Once you get on a good wood surface like this gal is dancing on, you'll hear those steps almost as well without the solid taps, though they do give a nice sound.
@fifthworld I got myself and my grandaughter a pair of cheap Tap shoes and we have great fun trying to do this dance. Of course we wont ever be as good as this lady. I just love it and watching her feet wishing I could do it as well as her.
Her name is Carol Mallot (sp). She responded to another You Tube video of her dancing and I emailed her. She's still dancing and her email was super nice.
I wish I knew what the fiddler was singing. I loved it! Whatever he said! Anybody know???

anybody watching VH1 should probably just be excluded from the group labeled "Intelligent Life," and could probably just be ignored.
the amount of people watching VH1 is like a statistic for how many hairs, on average, grow on the heels of my feet — irrelevant, and invalid.

@tacomuybueno I hear you, but I don't think that's the majority of American women, thank God. Yet...

with all the great stuff the bbc has put out, why doesn't it have a place on t.v.? all that is on t.v. is the same old boring bullshit.

Where does this video come from? And is that Aly Bain on second fiddle?
dbadagna 1 year ago
@dbadagna
Hi
A late reply - the video comes from a series by the BBC by Aly Bain
called - Down Home - With Aly Bain in North America - and yes the second fiddle is Aly Bain.
kessingland 1 year ago
Thank you--is this video still on the market? If not, are there more segments on YouTube?

"Arkansa Traveller-Tommy Jarrell" is the name of the other video. AK-Tomy Jarrell video is just a longer version of the Flatfooting one.
I actually met Carol Mallet Rifkin (the dancer) at this year's Merlefest (2009). Super nice lady and got to see her dance.
