I genuinely cannot understand why you wouldn't want free at the point of delivery health care. No discussion as to whether you are covered, no excess (deductables as they are known in the US), every child covered, no gambling with your life, preventative care instead of cures mean people live longer. In the UK you can have private healthcare too, but they use NHS doctors/surgeons, they use NHS operating theatres and use NHS wards. I love the NHS, they cared for me since birth and my unborn child

It does make private insurance companies richer - over $450 billion in direct payments over the next 10 years in ADDITION to the mandate and zero premium reforms except to say they can charge older members 3 times the amount they charge younger members. Or as the CEO of WellPoint said before Congress, "I think we as human beings greatly value our access to health care" meaning people will pay through the nose for "access" - even a policy with a $20,000 deductible.

Prior to 1965 in USA more people were buying health insurance privately than through public offerings, like Blue Cross/Shield.

So before 1965 and before Medicare/-aid, the private insurances provided a better and a cheaper option, while medical workers charged much less, so that most people were able to afford care out of pocket, which is the way it should be.

Health insurance was truly optional, because it wasn't treated like 'NHS'

True, pre-WWII it was Blue Shield out of Texas who first offered policies to try and get people to use services. This system greatly expanded during WWII due to wages being frozen during the war effort - this lead not only to employer based healthcare, but pensions and other benefits since that was the only way they could entice good workers from other companies.

I have private health insurance, and I've never heard of anyone being denied treatment or being denied coverage. Also, our government spends a lot less of it's annual budget than the US, so I can't see the advantage of the US system.

Gov't money pushes prices up. This is true for education, health, agriculture, energy, communications, military, banking, insurance, etc.

Get gov't out of those industries and have them compete for customers not based on subsidies and preferential treatment, but based on quality and on market share, and prices for all of those things will drop.

The point of insurance is that everybody pays. Most of the peoples luckily don't need the insurance, so their is enough money for does that really need it. It seems to be unfair that you have to pay for someone else, but you have to remember that you never know when YOU are the one who needs the help.

It was laughable, the wait times are longer here, true, but that's because we aren't abandoning people who can't pay to their demise. Our system isn't perfect, but it's still one of the best in the world, and everyone is covered from cradle to grave. I have no problem paying tax dollars for that.

It doesn't dictate any kind of treatments the Doc feels is right for you but it does allow the Doc to check the data base and see if another form has shown better results. It will also monitor the use of certain over use of medical procedures, as in the recent discovery that one hospital was routinely doing C-sections over vaginal birth

End of Life planning is basically a legal agreement that lets your Doc and hospital know under what conditions you agree to "extraordinary" measures to be used to prolong your life.
