Amazing man, thank you for being a man of class, thank you for your stand against apartheid. Thank you for standing against the racist ban on Haitian refugees by then president Bush senior. Thank you sir... thank you.
Two lasting memories I have of the quietly heroic Arthur Ashe:
1. Watching him win Wimbledon.
2 A TV interview with Wogan at the time of his diagnosis.
On both occasions he was beautiful to watch and to listen to; he was typical of many of the true greats in whatever field in that his humility detracted from his great achievements. In his quiet unassuming way he broke down barriers of bigotry in tennis, and attitudes then towards HIV and Aids. A Global Hero always!.
They're destorying the culture because they encourage the degradation of women on an almost unparalleled degree in music while promoting very little besides money, drugs, violence, and sex nowadays. Most of the popular music our, especially in rap, is helping to erode the morality of our people and there are tons of signs of that today.
Arthur Ashe is a hero and one of my all time favorites. However, he was not the first African American to win Wimbleton. We have to be careful to not forget about Althea Gibson and her contribution to the ground that they each broke for those that followed.
With his class and sportsmanship, he truly did help redefine the image on African Americans, sadly often placed on us BY people like those rappers who gave tribute to Arthur. And black heroes should not be extra noticed or highlighted for being black heroes, but people of good character who happened to be black and used that situation to fight injustice, which is a prejudice against all mankind. He proved more than being a heroic black figure--he chose to have character about his struggle.
May remind people Arthur wasn't actually the first black tennis player to win wimbledon - how can we not know the history of tennis in that Althea was actually crowned with that title 10 years prior. Come on peeps get with it, research history
Arthur Ashe was a gentleman! Very modest, nice and correct! Very popular and respected by all the tennisplayers on the tour! So sad that he died this way! R.I.P!
I remember vaguely when he was ill in the early 1990's...Its so sad how he was outed by the stupid media. He had a blood transfusion in the mid 1980's...following heart surgery..the blood was contaminated...Dam the medical profession for not doing a better job to screen blood,organs,tissues..So many patients died because of red-tape!! 1980's...I miss you Mr. Ashe...RIP..god bless jeanie
Wonderful person! I remember hearing about him when I was a boy. He's a very noble and inspiring man, who set a great example and left a beautiful legacy.
When the great man died, they asked the crowd at Madison Square Garden to stand in silence to honour; this was before a major boxing event. Unusual to see boxing behaving with such dignity, but it also says much about the esteem in which Arthur Ashe is held.
LOL these rappers dont even know anything about tennis, they really dont even care they just tryna make themselves look educated, but the truth is THEY DONT KNOW SHIT LAWL!!! THEY DONT EVEN WATCH TENNIS!!!
I just wanna know why goverment release his stamp and discontinue quickly? I thought it was gonna be available at least like one year or something. I used most of the stamp and only have four left.If I knew they'll discontinue selling, I didn't use it for maling bills and stuff...
I don't get it. The first African American to win the US Open was Althea Gibson in 1957 (and 1958), not Arthur Ashe. She was also the first African American to win Wimbledon (57 and 58) and the French Open (56). She was also one of the first African Americans to play professional golf.
Run Athletics needs to get its facts straight because there's no way a man as great as Arthur Ashe would them disrespecting someone person (Gibson) who paved the way not only for him but Tiger Woods as well.
Perhaps they are getting away with saying he was the first to win the US Open because at the time that Gibson won it the tournament was called the US National Championchips. I learned this when watching a Gibson video just now. :)

Some people on this comment page need to rethink what they are saying. to say all black people are lazy you have to be an idiot. do you personally know every black person. If not then you can not generalize a whole race. I am black and i know for a fact that all blacks are not lazy because if they were then we would not have black doctors, lawyers, and business men.
it is the saddest thing in the world when you see Africans living in poverty it really shows how lucky you are and how different one part of the world is
I am currently a white college student who plays tennis avidly. I have a black roommate, who is by far the best roommate I've ever had. He came from a family where his father was in jail, he lived off foodstamps, and didn't have hot water during the night in winter. He realized that he COULD get out of that lifestyle, and he has. He personifies the quote by Ashe, "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." It's easy to be angery at the past, but remember that EVERYONE can change.
Yes, she was a great woman and one that not many people are aware of. She was a brave and impressive woman.
Wilma Rudolph is another amazing woman who isn't known to many. She overcame extreme poverty, discrimination and childhood polio to become the best female track star of her time.
The words, "beauty," "grace," "intelligence" and "classy" should all be accompanied by a photo of Arthur Ashe. I have always idolized this man; what a true treasure he was. I remember the year he won Wimbledon and how happy I was for him. R.I.P., AA. You will always be remembered for all the good you did.

Bullshit. Black people are not oppressed by the system. They are just lazy and live with this destructive mentality that everyone and everything is against them. I've seen immigrants who didn't speak any English come to America with nothing but a few dollars and achieve success, open their own stores and business with no help from anyone. All that while the black people sat on a stoop telling everyone how hard life is and how oppressed they are.
What a horrible attitude you have. I find it interesting that the two most repressed groups in this country are African Americans and Native Americans. The first group was stolen from their country and the second had their country stolen from them. Maybe that's why they are so disadvantaged. You point out immigrants who came to America - that's right - it was their choice to come here. We stole Africans from their country and we stole Native Americans' country from them.

Bull fucking shit, black people are lazy, quit your fucking liberal guilt. what's the diff. between an immigrant with nothing and a poor african american person? the african american person has US Citizenship! Now if the black person works as hard as the immigrant, he should achieve success as much as easy as the immigrant. don't go, oh! black people were oppressed...everyone was repressed, not just them!
Some black people are lazy. Some white people are lazy. Ditto people of all races. Not every member of a race is lazy.
Women have been more oppressed than any other group, and I bet you're cool with that. After all - we don't work, do we? Yeah. Tell your mom that, you dork.
hey thanx for the facts to remember and promote in philly where im from they built a new tennis center he amazed me that he didn't sue the hospital for giving him HIV, what a honorable man and faced his fears wow! Is it the same how Countrywestern Singings are destroying the White Culture?
