Having suffered through HUNDREDS of horrible, boring, stupid and cheesy PowerPoint presentations in my life I wholeheartedly agree that PPT presentations have KILLED the ability of most companies and organizations to hold exceptional meetings and presentations. I cannot remember ONE PowerPoint presentation that could not have been done better with a flip chart or a whiteboard with dry erase markers. NO MORE POWERPOINTS!
2:36 "Just... leave your daughter..." Really? Leave my daughter? Is that what he said? Is it because she uses Power Point and should disown anyone who does?
As someone who has made presentations both with and without powerpoint, I note higher levels of engagement without PPT. People struggle to read slides while the speaker is talking, instead of focusing on what the presenter is saying. Powerpoint has its place, but we really ought to look at the differences between using PPT and someone with a white board or a projector screen who can write notes or draw diagrams from time to time, but where there's the focus on the presenter more than the "show."
Pöehm’s 95% figure is how much poor PPT there is. Used well, it would be 5%.
And if flipcharts had PPT’s default title and bullets, they would not beat PPT.
The problem isn’t PPT. It’s poor use of it.
About Pöehm’s video: Camera angle makes me feel like a child being scolded. Too much reverb and inhalation. Video halts and jumps, maybe should have been compressed. This distracts from his message. Sans video, he would be more effective.
The problem isn’t video. It’s Pöehm’s poor use of it.
I agree that presentations with out power point are more effective. I am architectural student. One of my professor does not like to give power point presentation. He does very good without it. However, there was one time when he had to give one power point presentation because he did not have time to put everything on a board. All grades in my class were much lower for the quiz on that topic.
I find this concept a bit silly. Powerpoint is just a tool. If that tool is used badly or inappropriately that is not the fault of the tool itself. Also, a flip chart is not a viable alternative as it is much less portable and less scalable. A .ppt fits on a USB stick, laptop or tablet which can then be shown on a projector to much larger audience than could adequately view a flipchart. Also, how do I send a flipchart to people in different continents who are dialing-in to my meeting?
@magrpe You're right, In all presentations made on Power Point or similars softwares I have seen, about 90% of these presentations are wrongly made, simply because the presentations software users don't know how to use it correctly. I think that would be more interesting if the Presentations Softwares Manufacturers spread more documents and videos showing how to make a good presentation using their softwares, instead of just showing how to manipulate the tools of the software.
@magrpe powerpoint is not simply used badly or inappropriately, that would not be problem.
Many people are forced to use it badly or inappropriately. Or they are forced to routinely observe how is is being used badly or inappropriately. And that IS problem.
@ProzacR : How are people being 'forced' to use Powerpoint? It's used because it is the best tool (and please let me know if you disagree) available that does the job, whether you like it or not. I'm not some sort of Powerpoint evangleist, I just think this is a ridiculous tirade against a software tool (regardless of how it is used) and a laughable premise for a political party.

@guh077 Read my book "The PowerPoint Fallacy" or come to my seminar - you will see how easy it is and how it just works. If you are a member of the APPP you can get the book for a special price! Sign in and finally do something!
at my college, you are not obligated to make a .ppt for seminars or any kind of presentations, but they(profesors and teachers) will sure inform you that it is expected from you to do it(.ppt). so, it's like, they almost imply that you'll be given lower grade if you don't do it....
