The actual Devilman from the manga and 3 OVAs is beyond awesome like you said.

the movie seems to have nothing to do with the original storyline. Guys if you haven't read the manga or watched the series, you are really missing out on something incredible. Don't worry about time. I read the whole manga in like an hour or 2.

In the 70's series Akira becomes bigger when he transforms into Devilman, which is actually his true identity in that series.
