I really like both the Quick Rod has more definition and a little more articulation but the Nitro much more saturation and sustain. Can the Nitro sound like the Quick Rod if the gain was backed off or is it just a different sound all together?

personally i'd keep the gain at around 11 o'clock and play harder. That is why you buy a very good hand wired amp, to pick up what your hands are saying better. not hide behind gain. tight playing though. GET HEAVY GAUGE STRINGS, Turn your gain DOWN AND PLAY HARD!!
@razormusik i disagree, I think the nitro sounds more muffled like mesa dual rec. The Quickrod seems to be way clearer thus I think it has adds 'definition' to the notes. I think that the quickrod or promod and the VHT pittbull ultralead ran together in stereo would be fucking breath taking!!
wow not much variation from what i hear here. the nitro seems a tad darker, grainier but, overall very close. same circuit with varying eq and wattages then?
i know in your info section you say u normally wouldnt run the bass that high, but I would say if you do turn it down, turn it down only slightly, your amps have so much balls, let that come through, ballsy and punchy as hell man, be proud!
Nice and crunchy....to me a great BROWN SOUND...just my opinion...Im curious though, I noticed you ran the GAIN at 2 and VOL at 9...what's the amp respond like the OTHER way around?? I usually run my amp with my two GAIN STAGES MAXXED and volume Low...
his gain is at 2 oclock, like on a clock, so it would be at about 8, and the volume is at 9 oclock, which is like 3 if you give the knob a 1-10 amount.
SO correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like the Nitro would have more of a spongy, compressed feel, whereas the Quickrod puts an emphasis on punch and articulation?
that's a pretty good description about the nitro, though the nitro is still very articulate. the quickrod has more upper mid emphasis and cuts through more.
Thats better yeah, stupid mistake of me. 32.5 sound better, I mostly bias a bit higher than that. But you dont have to, already got an awesome tone ;)
@windsen Great video. What is the difference between using Eminence vs. Celestion speakers? I was thinking of replacing my Celestions to get a less bright, less fizzy tone and maybe get the lows bigger and tighter by throwing a "Swamp Thang" in the mix? THX
@ctalbert1-If you haven't done it already, definitely replace the Celestions. The ones made in England, the only good ones, are exorbitantly overpriced, and the Vintage 30 and all the other so called "hot ones" are made in China. Eminence is the bad ass to me. I have a Roccaforte 2X12 cabinet, and the Eminence Black Powder speakers, coupled with the cabinet's bomb proof construction, is the best speaker setup I have ever had! Give them a try!
do EL34's and E34L's make that much of difference of how wide and aggressive the sound is? going amp to amp it was like wow the second clip was way bigger sounding. i knew E34L's were a bit punchier, tighter, and more aggressive but damn. was that just because of the EL34's and E34L's being back to back or is the other amp normally bigger sounding?
great tone and playing!...I think I'm gonna have to get me a Quickrod intsead of a Cornford or CAE OD 100. Is that an original riff? I'd love to learn that. Cheers
I appreciate your posting of this sound clip....and what do I think about it? TOTALLY BALLS TO THE GODDAMNED WALL! Fantastic freaking sound! No muddy crap or ear piercing high end, all tones are equal and and have balance. I know you set your EQ all at 12:00, but it seems that every amp I try out, you can't get eveness and distinctness of tone, no matter how much you try to work the controls. The Splawn has put that aggravation into the trash heap! Great playing too!
yea, there are several factors that kind of mask the differences b/t the amps. i've tubed them each specifically to kind of blend to my ideal sound. the slight compression from the maxon also is a factor. they do "feel" and respond distinctly in person. the Nitro has a much bigger low end punch that you really feel, much more so than the QR.

You can get the QR and Nitro almost sounding identical.

I wanted a Quick Rod... but now I want a Nitro. That's another $100 I need... Oh well. Do you think I could get tones like this with a PRS Custom 24?
Lucario1211 4 months ago
@Lucario1211 Of corse, as long as the PRS custom 24 has hot pickups it should be fine which most of them do
zerooneonefive 1 month ago
THe higher wattage speakers all sound smoother and warmer. The 25 watters make the tone ratty and spitty, harsh to me.

God damn. I wish these amps weren't so expensive. Even with all my graduation money I barely have enough for a head let alone a cab!

I'm hearing a bit less definition in the quickrod than in the nitro.

@razormusik maybe if the nitro had kt'88s that may help the definition a bit. I have heard those tubes turn an ok amp into a killer amp.

does Splawn still mod amps or just do their own line

Nitro sounds bassier while Quickrod is kinda similar to hot rodded plexi style tone

I'm curious to what you feel it sounds like without the booster? been looking at a comp 100 watt, and really want to get away from pedals. G

what kind of pickups in your guitar?

Yo are these riffs a song or did you just put these together?

With the GoV/MoW Speakers, I prefer the sound of the Quickrod but with the GoV/SB25 speakers, I prefer the sound of the Nitro
The quickrod might be a better choice after all.

Nah 1850 for the QR and 1950 for the nitro. You can also get a comp for 1550 (qr without clean channel)

WAYYYYY brutal :)

Did you have Scott install the SEDs for the QR or did you? If you did, what was in there before, and how do the SEDs compare?

the last demo which was the quick rod and the splawn cab stocked with the splawn speakers and governors is a winner!

53mA and it doesnt blow? I think the amp eats tube with bias settings like that.
timjatomnee 3 years ago
53 is referring to the tube rating, not the amp bias. the amp was biased to around 32.5 mA or around 65% given a 500 plate voltage.
