  • Bet Louisville hasn't had that much fun....since the thunderous night I was born there on July 8,1952...Mother said I cried so loud I woke the whole city...She has... never Lied!!!!

  • After singing this song on Prairie Home Companion last weekend, JP said that when he first performed it at a family reunion, one of his relatives told him afterward that he'd gotten Grandpa just right except for the fact that he smoked Cools. JP said he'd needed a two-syllable cigarette, hence camels.

  • @revjht Thanks for the interesting comments. Peace

  • :):):):):) Thank You for making me smile just now. I have an original recording of this song on vinyl & have'nt played it for sometime!!! it was always a very special song to me. More so than the others on the album, because my grampa in real life was a carpenter too. Who built house's, store's & things just like john sings about in this song. Love the song, thanks for posting!!!

  • @welder541 I was raised by a family of carpenters too. Glad you got a good laugh out of it. Hopefully he will be back around our way again soon so I can post some more.......

  • Dad played this all the time. I haven't heard it since I was 8 and the words came floating back.

  • john saysin the liner notes of his"great days"album that really his grandma went to collage in brea,ky.and his grandpa smoked chesterfields.

  • my sister and I are taking my dad and Uncle to see John tonight in Thunder Bay , we grew up listening to him going to be a great night!

  • Any news on JP's health these days?

lllega smile john prine song at lllega smile july 20, 2009.

  • "Voted for Eisenhower cause Lincoln won the War" What does he mean by that?

  • Eisenhower and Lincoln were both Republicans. Eisenhower was the supreme allied commander in WW2.

  • The sub-text here is John's grandfather was from Kentucky, but a part of Kentucky that was Unionist. So he would have grown up hearing that Abe Lincoln saved the Union and was a hero. Thus, the vote for Eisenhower. Learn some frickin' history kaintuck before you ask stupid questions.

  • I am a child of history and I simply asked because it doesn't make since. John Prines family was from West Kentucky which was wholly Confederate in sympothy. Plus the Republican party of Eisenhower's day had changed since Lincoln's day. In L's time the reps. were the liberal party while today as well as in the time of Eisenhower they are the conservative. . So shove it up you ass oldfield73 it is you who needs the history lesson! Side note: Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of KY

  • I have to agree here, that line never made sense to me either. History or not, there is little connection between them. I think there is something else. Besides, there is a 100 year gap there. So the grandpa would have had to be old enough to know Lincoln won the "war" in 1860's and still vote for Eisenhower?

  • @oldfield73-- oldkaintuck is absolutely correct in his response to your lack of logic. Learn some frickin' respect before you post stupid comments.

  • Apparently Grandpa came from the many Union sympathizers in Muhlenberg County. Bowling Green has nothing to do with it; that's Grandma's school, we don't know if she was from there originally, and even if she was, she might have also been from a pro-Union family. But if you know John as I do, you know he doesn't overthink this stuff. Grandpa may have also voted for Hoover, Coolidge, and Dewey, but those names don't make for a nice lyric. My logic is fine; yours won't prevail, without fail.

  • @oldfield73 My brother of another mother ...you're starting to sound like a damn Yankee....what is your Point...if any?

  • If you are from the South, like my family was, you voted the same way your grandpa or great grandpa voted...and especially for whichever side your family was on in the Civil War. Therefore, descendants of Union soldiers mostly voted for Republicans, descendants of Confederate soldiers voted for Democrats. That's mostly a generalization, but up until the last generation or so, it held pretty much true.

  • Always adored John Prine. Love the videos. Would love him to tour Australia or i might have to go overseas to see this LEGEND!!!

  • "Voted for Eisenhower because Lincoln won the war" is a phrase I have used frequently since I first heard this song. John Prine forever!

  • Im a grandpa,,, the kids say Im the best grandpa they got,, Hope they get to grow all the way up...death and or death by bunga,,,to all pedifiles,, child and women abusers,,,in your higherpowers name afgmen.

  • I could chain-smoke these kinda videos. Keep'em comin.

  • LOL Well put (especially considering the song you're replying about). John Prine is a genius and this is one of my favorites -- a gleaming example of a folk-song character study tinged with humor.

  • YAY! I was there! :) It was my first time ever at a John Prine concert. Actually, I barely knew who he was when I came (a friend took me)and now I'm a HUGE fan!

  • I think it was one of the best shows I have seen! Thanks for the comment and the sub my friend!! More to come from this show for sure!!!
