I really don't understand why she is so popular.Vocally speaking, again:VOCALLY speaking it is one big drama.Bad breathcontrol totally out of tune, extreme bad voice, every sentence ends with a horrible vibration. Many may like her,but she cannot be in the shadow of e.g. Barara Streisand. And regarding the song, the better version is the original one by Eydie Gormé,who is also not my taste, but at least better.Minnelli is ONLY show,so if that is your taste, okay, but voicewise...
@jcriedijk that "horrible vibration" at the end of every phrase is called vibrato, and many, many singers-especially operatic and thesbian- strive for it. Her breath control is fine- taking breaths at the end of phrases and using it the way she should. Take a look at the sheet music and you'll see she had near perfect pitch for the song. Therefore, you have no leg to stand on.
@yougottagetagimmick, I tottaly agree. I mean thats what i thought. She and her mother had an amazing relationship according to interviews. So i think she is pulling out emotions like her mother would. She has a true tallent like only a group have today.
What a haunting rendition- seemed she was evoking her childhood-"it was a good time but such a short time (with her mother)? Did they remove this song from the showtime version I recently saw?
Does anyone think that maybe she's playing her mother in this song, and, as this about Judy Garland's marriage to Vincente Minnelli, and then the child she's singing is Liza? Does that make sense to anyone else? Because, you know, Liza does "look a lot like him." *grins*
OMG! I do think that too!!! And notice that when she starts singing it again she has tears in her eyes!!! I thought I was the only one who thought that!
@yougottagetagimmick Yes! I tottaly agree. I mean thats what i thought. She and her mother had an amazing relationship according to interviews. So i think she is pulling out emotions like her mother would. She has a true tallent!
@yougottagetagimmick Interesting notion. But NO! Heh. She is singing the ENTIRE song as written and from the movie "Ryan's Daughter." If there would be a comparison to make, it would be to the title song to the musical "Cabaret." Same arrangement, tempo and overall feeling. It is a GREAT song that fits the horrific ups and downs of my own show biz life.
Timeless~

Energetic, effortful performance of a dynamic arrangement, exciting in its own somewhat disturbing way.
