  • Thank you, John Cusack...

  • Am7 is a barre without the 5th string, so its played with only 2 fingers... Damn he is putting all of his fingers to play that!!! And the guitar is out of tune... also the key of C should be a CM7, G7 and Dm7 not Am7...

Watch proper tutorials please like Jimmy Bruno's or Joe Pass'...

  • @kingofskateop if you listen to what he says i assume you are refering to where he plays Dm9 not Am7 and the chords for a II-V-I progression in the key of C are Dm7-G7-Cmaj7 there is no Am7 chord played

  • @kingofskateop man the am is the 6 which leads back to the 2 you're not supposed to end on am7

  • no offense but this guy's kind of a herb, but he's got great theory

  • Im with Mcnugget on this one, up the horns! \m/

  • In the key of C, A7 is neither 2,5 or 1 its 6dom7

  • It's just used to get back to the 2 again as a turn around cord for repeating purposes.

  • or is it a V of ii?

  • Great instructor... This guy can teach, couse I am learning...

  • needs more cowbell

  • thats subing chord types!!!,u wanna sub the whole chord for another see below

    Cmaj use F#-7b5,A-7

    Dmin7 use G7,Ebdim

    G7 use Bb7,Db7,Ab -maj7,D-maj7

  • yeah man! I agree! I was thinking the same thing...

  • That info would actually be useful if you actually knew why those borrowed chords were used. Since you obviously can't do that, and since nobody watching a video this basic is really ready to, please shhhh and learn some music theory.

  • but then it would sound horrible and no one would want to hear it

  • I like jazz guitar, rock guitar, and everything in between! The big disadvantage of rock is the distortion box. Sure, single note lines and certain intervals sound great. Unfortunately, you can't comp, walk bass lines and comp, play two simultaneously moving opposing melodies etc. without it sounding like a well-executed fart!

  • oh come on, metal.. jazz... other ways of expression. it's like discussing if buckethead is better than slash or not. drop it, dudez. henderson won't play what f.e. yngwie malmsteen does, and marty friedman is unable to immitate george benson, and so on.

after all, it's imo best if you get what's best from every genre. and then you get a beast like shawn lane. but it is still a style, referring to the same roots

jazz maniacs complain, because this music is not as popular as it should be.

  • i'd also prefer children to listen to coltrane instead of britney spears, but hey.. you can't destroy everything that is not jazz. in this way.. you behave like closeminded 'metal is a war' metalheads :D

  • hey waht guitar is that?

  • Everything that metal players do, from sweep licks to trilling in lydian to tapping, had already been done by jazz guitarists decades earlier.

  • Useful stuff. Thanks

  • Probably the "fastest" metal player is Rusty Cooley. But who cares, he has no phrasing.

THE single fastest guitarist I've heard (Shawn Lane) was actually a jazz fusion player. And others in the genre: Frank Gambale, Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, make most metal players look silly.

  • "wow jazz is alot more complicated than than metal.

but a metal solo is way more impressive than any jazz "

    in what way?

there's a whole different set of techniques involved in solo jazz guitar (i.e. chord voicings/walking bass etc...) that are extremely complex.

as far as single line melodies go, I find the average Jazz player is not only more tasteful than a metal player, but is often of comparable if not better virtuosity.

  • Good work, nice chords, great lesson, clear explanations tnx !

  • is anyone else having a problem where once the backing track comes in around 4:15 it's very hard to hear his playing and what he's saying over it because the backing track is way louder?

  • hahaha! exectly altruisticpervert. lol

  • Once again, same shirt, different haircut. I love all the lessons.

    VIVA BEEFCAKE!

  • One of the most valuable jazz tuition vids on YouTube! I really got my head around it with this one!!! Thanks alot!

  • good tuition!!

    and always fresh haircut =)

  • it´s a 2-5-1 progression alright with additional A corresponds to the Root ( C major= A minor ).

  • Yes it is. But th A7 is used as a dominant back to Dm7.

  • or since you dont have to play 6.. I want to understand progressions more.. where can I learn this

  • isnt that a 2-5-1-6?

  • Nice

  • I have to say I enjoyed this lesson and such beautiful chords. Nice melody and progression. I have to say if he was to tell me it was a G7b5 instead of a Dm7-Db7b5-Cmaj7 I'd take the G7B5 any day. Milokrb i salute your intelligence but I am reminded of the life of Brian and the people's popular front of Judea and the judean peoples popular front......

  • He should've explained the idea of the flat-two chord more in detail instead of calling it a G7b5. I think it isn't very smart of him to do that. I would call it a Dm7-Db7b5-Cmaj7. I'm sure someone who doesn't know jazz and looks at this is likely to get confused...

  • esta re mal explicado esto

  • Here's the truth about shredding: I admire guys like Michael Romeo who can play three octave arpeggios and stuff. HOWEVER, if you play tunes like Giant Steps, Countdown, or Moment's Notice by Coltrane, you may not have time to squeeze three octave arpeggios into chords which only last for two beats at a fast tempo!

  • yea jazz is a tough genre when dealing with theory and stuff. mostly imo because jazz is almost always built around improv. the musicians build up this maze with improv and have to find their way out by the end of the song.

  • For all the shredder boys who say Jazz guys are mostly "old" and "Soft". Two words: Scott Henderson. Not on Dym Darrels best day.

  • wow jazz is alot more complicated than than metal.

but a metal solo is way more impressive than any jazz

  • Maybe, but any jazz guitarist could play metal solo, but not any metal guitarist could play jazz...

    Dimebag could play it all...

    R.I.P Dime...

  • jazz was the most advance music when i was studying in berklee.

  • jazz imo is the most advanced music. especially when learning theory

  • holdsworth, mclaughlin are jazz/fusion guys whose chops blow those guys all outta the water

  • Well... thats just Fuckin Bullshit

  • EPIC FAIL! Im a metal guitarist and i sincerely disagree. It may seem more impressive but thats mainly because of the noise, energy and jumping around shredders do

  • that was a reply to the guy claiming metal is more impressive!! dont attack me jazz fiends! i love jazz!

  • ololololololo, raise your horns fello jazz guitarists \m/

  • im a metal fan and i like jazz more.

  • its a 2-5-1 but with an Adominant7 the same thing to C#dim7, so it's simply an approach to Dminor7...

  • thanks...after 19 years of playing, this lessons have re-introduced me the guitar.

  • Thanks your videos have drastically improved my playing

  • Excellent video! Wonderful chord choices and I can't wait to try this later.

  • that g7#5 sounds like crap going to a majot I would say g7#11 is a much better situation. I dont like altered scale doing to the major. just my $.02 glad this info is avalible to everybody.

  • maybe even a sus 4 would brighten it up a little. But the sharp fifth was cool

  • Great! Thanks

  • Good advice, thanks!

  • Muy bueno.
