I actually just mute it with my left hand by keeping my fingers on the strings but not pressing down onto the fretboard. Try lightly barring the strings if needed, all it takes is a light touch on the strings. Hope this helps...

hey mate im not sure if hes playing the bottom string or the 2nd last string with his pinky finger,

but hes muting the top string with his thumb

and probably just not playing the open strings

when he mutes

Sorry about not responding sooner about the strumming pattern, I have been doing a good deal of traveling and just got back to the US. Anyways, I actually dont really know the best way denote the pattern, but this should help a little bit:
