Ian Stuart Donaldson used to be a skinhead at school in the early seventies. Back then the skinheads used to listen to ska and rocksteady and at the same time go pakibashing. I'm not a skinhead nor am I racist, I was a lot in touch with skinheads since the early 80's and like their music. In '88 I had the pleasure to meet the founder of the SHARP in NY. To talk about how the original skinhead movement is somehow strange, you have to look what came out of it. There were original skins who gladly embraced Ian's message. And again. to fight an ethnic group is a frorm of racism never mind what the reasons are, no need to be apologetic.

Yes you are speaking the truth. There were racist groups within the Skinheads but Skinhead movement was violent towards anyone not Skinhead. Anyone different was a target, Pakis, Rockers and Gays stood out and were easy to identify. There was not the organised racism that exists in the Skinhead culture. @skinhead5917 SHARP was never supposed to be political. You can be far left or far right and still be a Trad or SHARP skin head. SHARP was only ever about Trad skins saying "We are NOT racist and we are taking back our subculture".
All of us have opinions on politics and other things but its because we are human, NOT because we are skins. Skin head was never a political movement.

But tell me: it also seems to me that skins always loved to fight (just like hooligans). Am I wrong? Meeting after football matches just to smash the face of each other? Ian Stuart Donaldson used to be a skinhead at school in the early seventies. Back then the skinheads used to listen to ska and rocksteady and at the same time go pakibashing. So much for the spirit of '69. There were always ok people and morons among the skins. Nowadays it's easy to idealize those days but the Skinhead movement had always two sides...

@thor1968 As it has been explained to me by older skins, the Jamaican and West Indian skins also participated in paki bashing. As it's been explained to me, they weren't bashing them because of their race but because of - as they perceived - the fact that they had success in their businesses very quickly, when the Jamaicans and West Indians had had to work very hard to assimilate in to English culture and have any kind of success.

@brikel Because I talk to people and I read. I'm mates with the skins in my area who have been around since the late 70s/early 80s and still bash WP cunts. I have friends from all over the world who have been skins since 70s/80sMy fiance has been skin since the 80s, was one of the first SHARPs in UK. I learn a lot just from talking to people and hearing their experiences. You might be a racist pratt but I know skins who have been around just as long as you and are staunchly against racism.

@skinbyrd1985 Being a youth movement without a very sophisticated message and with the rude boy / mod background it was a "natural" thing to act like they did; kick the strangers who "steal" our jobs. There were/are punks who think the same way.
The skinhead revival end of the 70's was much more prone to accept extremist ideologies due to their stereotyped style and behavior and because, born from the punk movement, it had mostly white protagonists.

Skins were never political though and were NEVER about white power. If you're white power, it's impossible for you to be skin head - it basically pisses all over our roots, which Trad and SHARP skins fight to uphold.
I disagree that Paki bashing was ever racially motivated. The skins didn't go "Oh they have brown skin so we'll bash them". It was because of their refusal to assimilate with the locals and their perceived ease at getting wealthy while others struggled.

I'm not a skinhead nor am I racist, I was a lot in touch with skinheads since the early 80's and like their music. In '88 I had the pleasure to meet the founder of the SHARP in NY. To talk about how the original skinhead movement is somehow strange, you have to look what came out of it. There were original skins who gladly embraced Ian's message. And again. to fight an ethnic group is a frorm of racism never mind what the reasons are, no need to be apologetic.

There isnt any skin meeting where skins get together and discuss what race is ok or not ok...at least not for real skins maybe for white power boneheads. Do a little research you'd be suprised how different skins are from what you might imagine.

Yes you are speaking the truth. There were racist groups within the Skinheads but Skinhead movement was violent towards anyone not Skinhead. Anyone different was a target, Pakis, Rockers and Gays stood out and were easy to identify. There was not the organised racism that exists in the Skinhead culture. I believe that started with the National Front and when the KKK came to England trying to recruit. The Klan came to the Rockin' clubs I drank in. Most people saw them for what are they are.

Not sure what is being said here (or trying to be said) but it seems like the original skinhead movement is being romanticised. As an original skinhead in the late '60's I can tell you that there wan\s nothing romantic about it. We drank booze, chased birds, fought on the street and at football grounds and, yes, we were racist. That's how it was. Great times.
