right on soapy05, this is ridiculous! what an incredible fetish we have for crap like this! Anyone else notice how sexy this guy thought this setup was and how he coyly holds the leather strap...tisk tisk tisk...this is truly erotic stuff! Oh if only we could plastic wrap the entire thing and then have plastic wrap around the plastic wrap to preserve the plastic wrap...maybe just maybe we can really start to make a difference in the world! ...I think i just vomited in my mouth a little....

that is overdoing it for something that will eventually end up in a land fill. I would have much greater respect for a company that does away with this excessive packaging and little plastic bags for every little accessory and ships items in just enough packaging to keep the item safe. a huge jewelry box is not that.

@soapy05 If I paid $2000 for a non-interchangeable lens camera with a prime lens, I sure as hell better get a fancy box. Don't worry, there won't be enough of these sold to make a dent in any landfills.

To clarify, I'm not trying to be anti-Leica at all -- they make amazing photographic tools and the quality is absolutely second to none. But the X1 is overpriced by about $1000 in my opinion.

Beautiful, classy packaging to appeal to those who are buying a camera more on the basis of legendary mystic and status rather than on high performance picture taking capability. Sadly, the X1 is not the ultimate, rugged (weatherproof), reactive (fast AF), decisive moment (low light to ISO 6400) camera so many of us are waiting for. If Canon would ever get serious about their Powershot G and incorporate an APS-C sensor at a $1000 price point it would probably kill the X1.

@ar4216 Have you ever used a Leica M? It cant any better than that. I mean a Nikon F5 is better film camera but the size of the Leica is what makes it my favorite camera. Im still not very convinced with the Leica digital cameras.

@famousPhotog Damn right. Keep in mind though that the M9 is a huge progression from the M8. This shows that Leica might not get everything right at the first try (They're known for that), but they're capable of making great products after all. As with most things, it's not wise to be an early adopter.
