It depends of the photos. If it's some bloke using his/her webcam to take a picture of him/herself, then, I find it stupid (For a DeviantID, it'S another story)
But if someone uses his professional camera to take pictures of beautiful stuff, and make it even more better with photoshop and then post it on DA, it's considered as art.

Recoloring is against the copyright laws anyway. And RealitySquared does NOTHING about it. Also there is already a limit for underaged users. R^2 doesn't do shit about it. You can basically get a no-instaban when you get a premium subscription and lots of page views, no matter what you do. What would have been good is to focus more on administration.

I joined DA a year ago, where I put my cartoons and other pieces of artwork up. I'm slowly moving into other forms of art, but I still like to practice my cartoons in my spare time. The only problem is the community I am in has pretty horrible people in it, and against it...so all the other people in the community really get dramatic all the time. Yeah...it becomes a pain in the ass after about 15 dramatic journal entries. My art style is still developing, but dA...not a very friendly site.

Actually, I would say kids under the age of 16 shouldn't be on DA because of the pornographic nudity. (The artists claim it's art, but reading the comments suggest otherwise most of the time. I would say that most nudes on DA would fail the Miller Test.)

That should help a bit. I know there are still problems though, such as the lack of a yaoi/yuri filter and that from what I hear, DA mods will only help you if you have a premium membership.
I've been on dA for 2 years. I draw alot and I have friends there and I'm a alright artist. I have been dealing with the trolls and overall dumbasses all the time. and I take criticism well and make myself better at what I do. I just ignore the asses of the site and focus on the actual smart and intelligent people on the site.
I'm not saying my age, but some twelve year olds know criticism. I don't agree with the twelve year olds not going into dA, but I think they should let them join and block them from seeing any mature imagery. Twelve year olds shouldn't be exposed to porn and "artistic nudity" every day.
I personally like Deviantart, but you do have good points. Recolours need to Die in a Fire (BURN IT WITH FIRE if you will), Photography *can* be considered artistic but i'd like to see more drawings on there, i wouldn't even mind digital art, hell i do it all the time!

You know I have a best friend who is 12 and she is amazing at art, she gives CRITIQUES, so she does understand what critism is, and there are a lot of people who do report you for silly things. 1- I'm 12 and I know what critique is. Critique is one person judging another persons work of something (music,art,etc)

Ah, yes. Deviantart. I love the website, I hate the users... most of the users. Even at twelve I was on deviantart, but I took criticism fairly well. When it was placed in the form of a flame, with no construction in it at all, I would get upset. I could always take something like "You need more practice coloring, and the proportions are off." but I would get mad about "This is terrible. You suck horribly." That's just me though. Also, re-colors must die D': I don't want to see rainbow Sakura :(
I've been on DeviantArt for almost two years, and I gotta say, it's usually what's in your gallery that atteacts trolls. Sonic fanart is only looked down upon by some of the users because they don't like furry art/anthro. Due to my frequenting of the Complaints Forum, I've learned that a lot of people look down upon anime in general. Trolls will only troll you if you take the bait. Deviantart is turning into a photosharing site everyday, but that's what the report button is for.
I've been using DA for 3 years. I've never really had any of those problems. Pretty much, Sonic gets flamed a lot on DA. And I've only ever encountered 1 troll. I kind of love DA, it's fun, and there's actually a lot of impressive art on there!
This is so true. I've been a member for almost 2 years and it is all really going down hill. Recoloring isn't a big deal now. Now what really upsets me is when people colors line art and upload it, also the bases. Thats not art this is more of a role playing sight now. When I first started out, my art was crap, but it was less of an rp sight. I accepted what people said to me about it.
But I don't agree with alowing people going on to a page and give no reason to calling the art shit.

As a member for two years now, I must say that this is very true. It can get kind of frustrating dealing with these noobs especially when you're trying to make an effort to be a real artist like me. Despite that, DA has it's good points (or at least better than Fur Affinity) and I never regret joining. :)

I have a DA account, the only self photo is my ID image I have two other that are of eagles and all the rest are sketches.
ORIGINAL for the most part minus one or two sketches that were practice pieces.
Since I am a unknown artist I have not gotten any trolls yet, and only a few people favoriting my pieces and no crits at all.
Maybe it is because I am not a premium account user yet, oh well I don't want to pay cash for a art site.
I do always make sure to watermark my pieces..

I joined DA a year ago, where I put my cartoons and other pieces of artwork up. I'm slowly moving into other forms of art, but I still like to practice my cartoons in my spare time. The only problem is the community I am in has pretty horrible people in it, and against it...so all the other people in the community really get dramatic all the time. Yeah...it becomes a pain in the ass after about 15 dramatic journal entries. My art style is still developing, but dA...not a very friendly site.

Actually, I would say kids under the age of 16 shouldn't be on DA because of the pornographic nudity. (The artists claim it's art, but reading the comments suggest otherwise most of the time. I would say that most nudes on DA would fail the Miller Test.)

Tips for less cringe-inducing DA browing:
1. TURN THE MATURE CONTENT FILTER ON!
2. Set your homepage to show Most Popular deviations rather than Recent.
3. If you can, get a premium membership
That should help a bit. I know there are still problems though, such as the lack of a yaoi/yuri filter and that from what I hear, DA mods will only help you if you have a premium membership.

I've been on dA for 2 years. I draw alot and I have friends there and I'm a alright artist. I have been dealing with the trolls and overall dumbasses all the time. and I take criticism well and make myself better at what I do. I just ignore the asses of the site and focus on the actual smart and intelligent people on the site.

I personally like Deviantart, but you do have good points. Recolours need to Die in a Fire (BURN IT WITH FIRE if you will), Photography *can* be considered artistic but i'd like to see more drawings on there, i wouldn't even mind digital art, hell i do it all the time!

I disagree with the 12 year old things. You know I have a best friend who is 12 and she is amazing at art, she gives CRITIQUES, so she does understand what critism is, and there are a lot of people who do report you for silly things. But there are also lots of people who love the critism, I myself love it since it helps me get better at what I love! You do have lots of good points, but deviantart is awesome.

Let's just say this rant had ALOT of issues-
1- I'm 12 and I know what critique is. Critique is one person judging another persons work of something (music,art,etc)
2-The recoloring and all that. People like to do that and they even put who made the lineart.
3-Let's see... what about the part where you said 12 year olds don't know anything? I know you also said people don't know the difference from Myspace and Deviantart. Well that's about to change. You know some people do know.

I have to say, i'm 15 years old, and am an expert photographer and an amazing drawer... i love posting pictures of nature and animals, and anime sketches.... however unfortunately all of your rants are true and thats what prevents dA from being a perfect website. :( I love the site. but not all the users. :(

Photos aren't all bad..They have some good photographers on deviantart. ..but there are porno ones...very bad images that are not art and should not be on there..Not only that but DA is biased towards explicit images of women being allowed..yet they will ban images of two guys freaking hugging. No joking >_<. It's pissing people off a lot on DA now.

Ah, yes. Deviantart. I love the website, I hate the users... most of the users. Even at twelve I was on deviantart, but I took criticism fairly well. When it was placed in the form of a flame, with no construction in it at all, I would get upset. I could always take something like "You need more practice coloring, and the proportions are off." but I would get mad about "This is terrible. You suck horribly." That's just me though. Also, re-colors must die D': I don't want to see rainbow Sakura :(

I've been on DeviantArt for almost two years, and I gotta say, it's usually what's in your gallery that atteacts trolls. Sonic fanart is only looked down upon by some of the users because they don't like furry art/anthro. Due to my frequenting of the Complaints Forum, I've learned that a lot of people look down upon anime in general. Trolls will only troll you if you take the bait. Deviantart is turning into a photosharing site everyday, but that's what the report button is for.

I've been using DA for 3 years. I've never really had any of those problems. Pretty much, Sonic gets flamed a lot on DA. And I've only ever encountered 1 troll. I kind of love DA, it's fun, and there's actually a lot of impressive art on there!

This is so true. I've been a member for almost 2 years and it is all really going down hill. Recoloring isn't a big deal now. Now what really upsets me is when people colors line art and upload it, also the bases. Thats not art this is more of a role playing sight now. When I first started out, my art was crap, but it was less of an rp sight. I accepted what people said to me about it.
But I don't agree with alowing people going on to a page and give no reason to calling the art shit.

1. There is a rule for the age limit. Anyone under 13 or is suspected of being 13 gets banned until they do turn 13.
2. The premium subscription is an option of which you can choose to have. You can enter contests of which they give them away, so you don't always have to pay for them. There is no difference between not having a sub or having one.
3. I saw your "drawings" of sonic. I don't exactly think you have the right to criticize anyone for that matter. Sonic on dA= flamed automatically.

Despite that, DA has it's good points (or at least better than Fur Affinity) and I never regret joining. :)

I've blocked a few of the younger deviants for flaming me for saying stuff like "this is good, but I see a stray line there you could take that out easly ^w^" and they freak out lol
