You can achieve 300-400 Mph in a boat. ..Maybe 450-500, but at that speed, aerodynamics and resistance change and become very interesting and annoying. Most of it comes down to hull/body design and composition, the rest is peanuts really..... The only problem is that no one really wants to invest a great deal of money into a high speed experimental watercraft..so, I guess that's an idea I'm going to have to shelf for the moment. *sigh*

Yes. The tunnel in the hull forces air under the boat and raises it out of the water. Less boat in the water= more speed. I think its a toss up between a monohull and a catamaran in rough water and driver preferance.

There was a show on Discovery network called Build It Bigger. In one episode they featured Miss Geico and spent the entire show on Turbine powered Cats. It was a great show. Look for it on reruns. However, you require some small modifications. The vehicle is designed to ride on air and water, you can alter the trajectory and angle of the nose by adding small ailerons..somewhat of flying a water plane.....lol If you want to be really sneaky, you'll coat your hull in Teflon and add more than 1 pair of ailerons. ;)

Turbines typically burn 8-10% more fuel than piston motors, but turbines burn #2 diesel fuel(can be cut with 87-93octane gasoline), so the cost is less than the 110 octane race fuel which piston motors of similar HP have to use.

This boat is a 40' Platinum catamaran with 1800hp Lycoming T53-703 turbines(helicopter motors marinized by Turbine Marine of Pompano Beach Fl). The drives are Arneson/BPM shaft drives.

Yep, the fuel usage is a little higher than reciprocating engines and so is the initial cost but the hours between MOH and the simplicity of the design more than make up the difference when you get into these HP ranges. A 1500 piston engine might good for somewhere between 25 & 50 hours where these babies will go 2000 - 2500. No contest.
