Master of puppets is better... il ike the ones dave didnt have a part in... lightning is a great album no doubt about that. but master of puppets is a better thrash album... dave had no part in the puppets album at all and lars, james, kirk, and cliff. came together on that album in writing music more than lightning. i do think lightning has the better ballad though. but puppets is better because at that time 86 cliff kirk james lars could've benn called the 4 greatest songwriters.

@southpark645 wait, you do realize that Peace Sells came out in '86 as well, right? James' and Dave's writing style were different. James went for a more catchy kind of style and Dave went for a more complex style. Peace Sells and Master of Puppets are both great albums, so I don't know how you can single out Metallica the greatest songwriters of '86.

@KillJoy353 well youre very very right and that is true sir, but one thing you need to realize is that just because dave writes more technical dosent make him better, music isnt always about technicality, maybe because james went for a more catchy style of riff, is why metallica is a more household name, one thing i learned as a songwriter myself, if even the riff is catchy it will stay in your head more than a technical riff will, skin O my teeth isnt that technical, but its a catchy riff rght?

@KillJoy353 well thank you, but are megadeth and metallica making music for other musicians like slayer and anthrax, or are they making music for everydayd fans (some of their biggest fans arent musicians) who love them and their music, if they were making for slayer and anthrax, then technicl would be the way to go, one thing you will leanr eventually is that the listenr only cares about if its sounds good and they like it, they dont care how fast, how complex, what frets your playing it on

@KillJoy353 it dosent have to be technical for people to have fun playing it, i think blackened is a pretty tiring song, and i enjoy playing it, but when i play some of metallica's easier drum songs, that i like to play, like sad but true, i still have fun playing it on the drums, even though its really and easier song

Yes I would class it as better then Master of Puppets, but I can see why Master was one of there most popular albums.
