To be perfectly honest I know very little about hand guns but do want to get one. Thanks for all the info I want something that will knock a thief or trespasser down easily with out feeling much on my end. I have shoot a 308 rifle and a 22 rifle never even fired a shoot gun kind of don't want to cause of the kick. And I know im just setting my self up to be trolled by this comment. But what hand gun would you recommend for a newbie? Like I said accuracy over damage is what I want.

@Kittyrevelution - Glock 19, or 17 in 9mm. Great handgun for beginners, and experts alike. Defensive +P rounds can be had in 9mm which give a bit more oomf in desired. Both guns are accurate, but you will need to do your part in training.

45 not a good weapon to much recoil to much nerve damage to gun hand. Nine milometer no where near the recoil more accurate much more easy to focus your shots and you don't have to have both hands on the gun. you can hold a secondary weapon such as a flashlight or knife. Clearly a much more tactical weapon. But the 45 is fun to watch when it explodes a watermelon. In a fire fight don't miss that second shoot your wrist might be numb this gun is a pounder it beats up user pretty bad.

@Kittyrevelution You've obviously never shot a 45 acp. The 9mm luger and 45 acp are pretty close to the same. A nato pressure 9mm luger 124 grain hard ball load gets 6 to 7 FT.lbs of felt recoil while the 45 acp 230 grain hardball loads 7.5 to 7.9 lbs(this also veries considerably for both calibers depending on the gun). Still very reasonable and standard pressure 40 S&W perhaps the most common caliber in Law Enforcement across the country gets about 10.4 Ft. Lbs of felt recoil.

@Kittyrevelution The 40 S&W standard pressure 155 grain hollow point is generally going to be loaded 1200 fps identical to the 158 grain 357 magnum loads. Both gun get about 10lbs of kick. The larger heavier revolvers tend to kick a little less since the heavier weight considerably reduces recoil. But the 40 S&W is taking over along with its bottleneck little brother the 357 sig (which also offers 357 mag identicle ballistics with 125 grain hollow points) because there simply High cap.

@Kittyrevelution Heavier bullets also retain there muzzle velocities and energy out to longer ranges. All handgun calibers are about the same at 100 yards for point of aim. The 9mm 124 grain bullets loaded to 1100 fps will only hit at about 961 FPS or 250 Ft lbs. The 45 acp 230 grain load gets 850 fps at muzzle and hits with about 788 fps or 317 Ft. Lbs at 100 yards. the 9mm loses about 139 fps while the 45 only loses 62 fps.

@Kittyrevelution I will admit that though the 45 ballistics at 100 yards are dramatically better it hits about 3 or 4 inches lower with the same hold. But my nine can't knock down any of my steel silhoutte targets at those ranges and you get more used to the caliber you shoot most eventually weather its a 38, a 9mm, or a 44,etc. There are now high-cap 45 like the glock21 and the S&WM&P which are also makeing way in law enforcement along with the good old 1911 which never went away for a reason.

@tweezee well, I can't tell you what would go best with you, but I can tell what is good and worth a try. Just this summer I bought a 1911 (from Auto Ordnance) real affordable pistol. AS you probably know the M1911 is a .45, what I love about it is that because of its weight and design its got a gentle recoil for a .45. I have more control and accuracy with this pistol then I would with a .40 cal glock.

only problem is 8 rounds is about all you are going to get with its slim profile.
