@T3RRQR Yeah, I know, I saw the movie. But seriously, my question is still valid. That old guy is way too energic to be on morphine right then. Must've been smoking some funky stuff!!
@terminator847 I agree, I know and I saw the movie. But still, one must ask oneself the important question "What the hell has that Bela Lugosi been smoking?!
@WolfySnackrib666 He wasn't smoking anything, he just wasn't really that bright, that's why he agreed to star in these atrocious films. Actually, this made him famous, since he's the the only to actor to have starred in both the best movies ever made and the worst movies ever made.
Somehow the speech made perfect sense to Ed Wood! Lets face it...If Bela was alive when Wood directed 'Orgy of the Dead' he would have played a role in it!
Maybe it's me, but I think that Bela looks likes he's having fun. It's like "Hey, all you out there saying, 'look at poor Bela Lugosi, see how far he has fallen'. Who's getting paid for this? Who's up here on the screen and cashing the checks, huh? Sure, it's bad, but hey, I've earned this! Until you create an iconic cinematic image, shut up and watch me work." Just my opinion.
The dragon, I believe, is a metaphor for what prevents Glen from being a man. The dragon "eats little boys" and "puppy dog tail and big fat snails."
Although, they say "snips and snails" through the rest of the movie, which goes along with the rhyme that boys are made from, "snips and snails and puppy dog tails."
Therefore, since the dragon eats what makes a boy, he is eating what makes Glen a man.
@10truefreak01 To me, that makes a great deal of sense. I've never thought of it that way, but now since you explained it, I understand this quote more now. Thanks for explaining. :)
This scene was actually kidna creepy in a bizarre way until out of nowhere "Pull the string! Pull the string!" Still even in Wood's films Bela Lugosi rules.
"Beware! Beware! Beware of the big green dragon that sits on your doorstep. He eats little boys. Puppy dog tails and big fat snails. Beware, take care! Beware"
I read somewhere in a recent book or article that Bela Lugosi was the most malevolent actor in Hollywood.
In a recent Dallas Morning News article about the new Philip Glass score for Dracula, the reviewer spent less time reviewing the new music, then belittling Dracula as full of bad acting, low budget, and laughable special effects. Actually four of the actors were from Broadway, maybe five, and David Manners a popular lead from Paramount. And it was a prestige movie, but Depression era.
I get "Big green dragon at your doorstep", but I didn't get anything else. I think the "Big green dragon" is supposed to be the concept of people judging Glen, while the fact that they're at his doorstep shows how close everyone is to finding the truth, and how just walking out of your comfortable place of refuge could destroy him.
If a director tries to make something deep and meaningful that comes off in a way not how they planned, I would think that's the perfect kind of movie to dissect. Why try to dissect a movie whose intended message is clear? Rather, more effort should be put into looking into things that aren't what they seem.
this film has a message and its that you shouldent judge people for who they are.
you're trying to find meaning in dialouge that was rushed, written and shot in a matter of days. do you really think ed had time to care about hidden meanings in the dialouge.
you can look at any film and try and speculate what its about and probably come up with 1000 different theorys. you're just wasting your time here.
It may have been rushed, but that doesn't mean they put this in the movie for no reason. I already know that this film has a message about judging people. Knowing that, you can look at the dialogue seen here and try to make an observation as to what it means.
tell me what the stock footage of bison means, ed made films nobody understood because he dident have the talent to convey his messages. im not trying to discourage you from seeking meaning behind cinema. i ofen do the same, im simply suggesting you're wasting your time.
I don't know what the bison mean, admittedly. But I think there's something you should consider here. The comment I made, where I suggested some things about what this dialogue might mean, was made a month ago. I'm not actively deciphering this movie.
@Naikorasu The thing is. If a movie fails in delivering it's message then the movie itself is a fail. Actually...Ed Wood's intended messages in his films were pretty obvious. It's just his lack of talent or budget (or both) made his films either laughable or incoherent.
Also, not all deep films that go as planned are obvious or easy to dissect. Gattaca....great example. Another great deep film is Syriana.
Ed Wood is worthy of a laugh. Not worthy of a 20 page analytical paper.
@Naikorasu Well I was exaggerating. There are a million ed wood fanboys that over analyze ed wood movies and claim that he is a genius. Know what? Maybe he is. But it doesnt change the fact that his movies are one of the most incoherent crap ever made. He's pretty much Uwe Boll's level.
However, the fact that so many film makers have made fantastic films with less of a budget than ed wood doesnt speak well for his talent
I'm with Naikorasu. OK, the film is cheap and laughable, that doesn't mean it's below being analyzed seriously. It may not be about what Ed meant to convey, but what he DID convey. This speech is fertile ground for Freudians, despite it's lack of poetic refinement. And the way this film really touches a nerve in the gay and transexual communities says something for it. These people, in general, are no more stupid than average, and this film is ADMIRED in those circles. There is much to discuss.
@Steve99jp66 Ummm...not really. You want to see a film that REALLY touches a nerve in the gay/trans community? Watch Brokeback Mountain or The Crying Game. These movies are fantastic and actually manage to convey something meaningful coherently. If there is anything to be analyzed from Ed Wood, it's how it failed to really say anything and why. That is about it. Again, compare this film to Brokenback mountain or the Crying game, then you'll see how insignificant and bad this movie is
I didn't say it was great art; BBM & TCG are certainly better films. But GOG is well liked in the gay & TS communities, despite what you say.
This film CAN be analyzed and deconstructed. For example, a TS film opening with a child's fable? THAT MEANS SOMETHING! (Don't ask what, it should be obvious). A TS story being 'guided' by dark forces? Again, Freud could have a field day. A 50s TS film with 'horror' undertones? I'd say that says something about being TS in a very conservative society.
@twb176 He does. This is kind of remarkable compared to the way these lines were kind of mocked in Burton's film. I don't think they were making fun, but it would have been good to play these lines straighter.
The Green Eyed Dragon with the 13 tails was written in 1926 and sung on the radio By John Charles Thomas in the 30s. I've heard it. It's amusing. The Thomas version is not available on You Tube. His other stuff is. "Beware, take care of the green-eyed dragon with the 13 tails. He'll feed with greed on little boys, puppy dogs, and big fat snails. Then off to his lair each child he'd drag and each of his 13 tails he'd wag. Beware, take care, and creep up on tip toes."
that makes no sence lol, "beware of the big green dragon that sits your doorstep, he eats little boys" wtf? lol... you gotta hand it to ed wood, he trys hard and doesn't give a rats ass what people thinks lol
I haven't been lucky enough to see the whole film but this scene's use of lighting and tone seems the best out of all the clips of Glen or Glenda? I've seen. What is clear is that Ed Wood struggled with gender identity issues throughout life and his decision to create and base the film on his own experiences of transvestism was incredibly brave, particularly in the 1950s.
Well, for one thing, this IS the original Transylvanian Dracula for us..
What is most impressive about this is that, within such a fractured movie, this performance stands out even though from what I've heard,Lugosi was improvising...
a testimony to the genius in this man... those eyes tell so many stories...not just the mess that is Glen of Glenda, but also the story of Lugosi, a man who knew the darkside all too well..and portrayed it in a genius manner
You are a very polite person! In any case I did'nt say certainly, I said probably. And then, if he had not teeth yet in '31...probably it's 'cause he was drug addicted since '31 ahahah!!!
Ed Wood's movies are memorable for both the good and bad. Sure he's "infamous" for making a steady chain of "bad" (but hillarious) movies, but none of them are in the IMDB bottom 100. Now THOSE movies like "Manos: Hands of Fate", almost all the MST3K alumni and Gigli are a REAL pain to watch!

He could hold the attention of the audience regardless of the film quality.

I really don't understand what does "a big green dragon", puppy dog tails and big fat snails have anything to do with the main plot.
Either way, Lugosi's the film's saving grace.

What are little boys made of?

Well, for one thing, this IS the original Transylvanian Dracula for us..
What is most impressive about this is that, within such a fractured movie, this performance stands out even though from what I've heard,Lugosi was improvising...
a testimony to the genius in this man... those eyes tell so many stories...not just the mess that is Glen of Glenda, but also the story of Lugosi, a man who knew the darkside all too well..and portrayed it in a genius manner

He looks like teethless here. Maybe it's due to his old age.

Bela never showed his teeth not even in 1931's Dracula

You are a very polite person! In any case I did'nt say certainly, I said probably. And then, if he had not teeth yet in '31...probably it's 'cause he was drug addicted since '31 ahahah!!!
Best regards

I just can't stop looking at this clip. His innunciation of each word is poetic and lyrical.
Oh, and bevare.
Take care.

I just love his face at the end when he says the last BEWARE...
Epic!
