Asperger Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum. An individual's symptoms can range from mild to severe.
Their IQ's are typically in the normal to very superior range. They are usually educated in the mainstream, but most require special education services.
Because of their naivete, those with AS are often viewed by their peers as "odd" and are frequently a target for bullying and teasing.
Should we then call the neurotypicals "disabled" and make videos about how "heartbraking" it is that they've found a spouse? Because after all if the neurotypicals are going to be a minority then they are the ones who'll have communicational difficulties and would have almost no understanding of the social rules because they will no longer be the same! The proper communication is going to be done in an austistic way and this will be the only socially acceptable way!
Yeah, right! They make it look like that all Aspies except for these two end up virgins at 80. It's soo "heartbraking" to be slightly different. If you're different then you're said to be disabled. But you know there is something that normal people tend to miss! It's the fact that the number of children borned with autism is tramendosly increasing. So most probably in the future nearly everybody will be an autist and then autism will be the norm.
This is an awesome story; I have Asperger's,and I've been fortunate enough to be married to a "neurotypical" (NT) wife for 27 years next week.
I do find it ironic that those of us on the autistic spectrum tend to do better than NTs in at least one social skill: accepting people for their differences.
small talk is creepy because people who small talk with you are calling you boring because basically there passive aggressively implying that the only conversation they can have with you is the basics, its a subliminal way of saying your uninteresting and in conclusion im afraid to go out in public because of the constant reminder that everyone is attacking my lack of ability to bring nothing more than the weather update so i lock myself in my house sometimes for days on end.
What that man says at about 1:38 is very true. When I was in elementary school, I baffled teachers because I was precocious, but had anxiety attacks, meltdowns, and didn't know how to make friends. I was in a school that was known for its work with people with developmental disabilities, but my mother had to fight tooth and nail to get me the support I needed.
@kirayng77 You've got a point. :) But I say the more news stories discussing the disorder, the better. I mean, screw the movement to "find the cure": there are way, way too many people who don't even know what this is.
@chaneldior21 As a person who has it, I pretty much have to say explaining it is a little complicated. I just know it's described as a learning and social disability. If your child has this, it is guaranteed you'll have one unique child. You're better off looking through the internet for a good understanding of it.
Soooo lucky. I wish I could find someone. I prefer to have a girlfriend with Asperger's, becuase most of them have interesting personalities and they understand me, at least for the most part.
NT people are mostly the same around here, they judge, party, and get drunk every weekend etc. I don't like NT's because I hardly relate to most of them, and I feel awkward around them. I've been hurt by many people just trying to make a friend.
My boyfriend & I each have Asperger's Syndrome too! I've had struggles with friendships as well as relationships up until my roommate, but my boyfriend(I don't live with him) made my life even more complete. He's very respectful yet comforting in my times of doubt or despair when other people would just continue to be judgemental. My bf even supports the fact that I'm learning a 2nd language as he is very proud of me for to the point where he bought me stuff to help me learn. I love my James! <3
@Muraabit I think that's more of a nervous tick. Let me ask you something. To me the guy seems visibly autistic in his speech and mannerisms, but what do you think about the woman? Does she seem autistic when she speaks or in her mannerisms?
@Muraabit of course not. But I was curious what other people thought. I couldn't really tell from looking at her or hearing her talk that there was anything wrong with her
I believe some people lack confidence or feel not comfortable the moment they meet others on their level of intelligence because they feel like they have to prove themselves so therefore we get back to the questions that Abraham Maslow raised about self actualization.
I sometimes feel like I'm inconfident when I have to undertake certain important measurements but I am more the kind of person that does not think too much about unexpected hardships that befalls upon me so I kinda try to keep myself busy in order to distract my problems.
Remaining patience firstly but sometimes it becomes a little bit hard so I try to do various things such as reading, watching movies, playing videogames or web surfing but it occures to me that when I have problems and think about it, it's always when I'm home. When I go out visit my family or hang out with friends of mine, I don't take these problems with me, it is just like I shut down the lights and I never talk about it and prefer to keep it for myself.
Very interesting story and I am an aspie and I like to look up on youtube and online stuff about Autism because it is interesting. I have had a hard time with relationships but I am only 18 and it will get better. I also have a friend who is autistic and she is a girl very interesting person she is practically like my sister or the sister that I never had!
@ThEcumstation Uh, first of all, who are you to say she don't have autism, douchebag, you don't know her, so why judge her? because you got nothing else good to do but trash and gossip about good people, grow up! Secondly, Yes, she does have a very slight form of autism, i can tell, and she don't look like no gold digger to me. Please stop your immaturity, show you actually got some class.
@Jaay1000s Jay, My friend Aspergers will not prevent you from having a family, by no means, yeah some not so supportive family members, doctors that think they know you might try, but as long as you and your partner stand your ground, they will eventually back off, for the ones that don't, then they can miss out. Just keep being the awesome person you are, your love will come to you! :)
@eastender86 Continue to say that, keep your head held high, don't let anyone stand in the way of what you want in life! You will find true love someday, Im a 26 year old Aspie woman, i met my soulmate (non-aspie) at 25! :)
@eastender86 Same with me. I am a 25-year-old Aspie, but while I never had girlfriends in real life I had short online affairs with girls - all of them in normal behavior, not autistic - three times. It is a coincidence that the both of us are dreaming of the same thing one day. :)

My daughter is on the spectrum. Last year she tried to sell books on Amazon but was late shipping the books. They permanately deleted her account. However, they have deleted MY account, her mother just after a week that I created it this August. They told me "do not bother writing back". They punish an entire household. Do NOT use Amazon. They also refuse to reimburse me for the shipping I paid for. I told them about ASD and they didn't care. I have followed all Amazon rules.
I agree with the separate bedrooms and for years just couldnt understand why people just didn't 'get it'. Now I know its because of me having aspergers :)
I am 24 year old male with Aspergers. I have trouble showing emotion to my fiance and a suitable manner. I get anxious and will sometimes pinch, squeeze, or push her away when I can't find the words to say I need a moment. Yesterday she sat the engagement ring on my desk and went home. She will tell me today whether we can be together. I am losing my best friend, my lover, and the only woman I have fully let into my bubble of life slip away because of my inability to control my Aspergers. :(
@zo0m14 That just makes me mad right there, she's not giving you a chance! She should love you for you, should respect the fact you have aspergers. If she dumped you, then that just simply means that she did not love you and accept you wholeheartedly, whether you have aspergers or not, you deserve some woman that will love you for you and will understand. What she basically did was a dumb move, she may have had gypped herself from marrying a wonderful person who would truly love her.
@GaaraBabyEater LOL They probably wrote about their experience and sent it to Glamour magazine, to uplift and encourage other aspies who struggle with love, maybe :)
Respond to this video... They are such a cute couple. i am happy for them. however, i know a few autistic couple (i used to be in one) so this story isn't that unusual xxxx
Doesn't like fluorescent lights, doesn't like the sound of gum smacking or noise, doesn't like uncomfortable temperatures... so they're just like everyone else except they have dorky personalities.
Its a little more complicated then simply not liking it. It can sometimes feel painful to listen to noises you don't like, or feel things you don't want to feel. I can break out into tears sometime when these things happen. The people around you have to be extreemly careful.
asperger's and autism aren't the same thing. They are both different forms of PDD (pervasive developmental disorder), though Asperger's is a little less extreme than autism. I'm an aspie.
omg,i read self help books too, like how to win friends and influence ppl by dale carnegie, double your dating by david de angelo, the game by neil strauss & company, body language, how to communicate with ppl,all dat stuff..
@MrDirectorMan18 more intelligent, they lack brain power in the social side but are more powerful in the other sides, he says "in a way it's atlmost more difficult to be high functioning" and i think ofcourse it is!
True in a way, but I think many people with autism (like myself) can relate to the story. It's not big news or anything, just an uplifting and small story on how two socially awkward people come together.
I have Asperger's and my wife does not know it. We are apart because she is in another country and I need an apartment too. My father has cancer and pnonila. My parents want me to move out. They get money from me too.
@Tipperracinghonda They are NOT in love. One is "in lust" and the other just likes the idea of someone being "in love" with her. I can't understand why you are unable to see this. Watch the video again, more carefully this time.
well ur right about them differing, however, both disorders fall in the same spectrum and are VERY alike, thus the reason why some have been misdiagnosed. on top of that, it is known that people with AS marry, bare children, and succeed in life. In my opinion, High function is a worse case than AS. 1 of the main difference is that High function delays in motor skills and language. So if this vid proves that if high function autism can do it, so can AS. have a good day!
I'm going to follow her suite. I don't have autism, but I want love and success. I am going to read How to win friends and influence people and focus on career, real friends, and family.
Me and my girlfriend both have AS. She drives me crazy with her quirks and I'm about 30IQ points smarter than her , but I still have a spiritual connection with her that i never got with any other woman. Also, she has some really big tits.
@initiatorhater0688 Nah dude, dont go to a hooker. I know its easier to take that road to achieve a sex life, but think about the stds you might catchl ike aids, herpes, etc which most are uncurable
My husband and I have Aspergers. We are currently sharing a bedroom. The first for me and for him.Previously this would have been my worst nightmare. I lost many relationships over this issue. The secret is we know how to be quiet together. We know how to give each other space. We both love being on our own a BUT we have found special joy in being together. We have mutual obsessions and interests and similar difficulties and fears and so we understand each other when the rest of the world doesn't .
Um maybe there's something in the magazine article to suggest otherwise, but they never said at any point that they had asperger's. While they said they had autism and were high functioning that isn't the same thing. So unless there's more to the story either the title is messed up, or the reporters fouled up.
@AspiePilo82 They are still classified as two separate things. So if there's nothing more to the story, the title of the video is incorrect, ergo it's false advertising.
Kill the aspies! Drive them to the oceans, and drown their young! Impale them on fallen branches tipped with obsidian! Tie up their hands and feet, set fire to their faces, and let them slowly sink in quicksand! Smash their hands and feet, then lock them in a cage full of hungry, angry pigs! Create a huge beef grinder, then feed them through, slowly, feet-first! Shove thermite up their asses! Grease them up, and shove them down the throats of whales! Skin them alive then kill 'em all with fire!
i am an Aspie, been married for 4 years, and was recently diagnosed. I don't have my own room, but i enjoy sleeping at my computer chair sometimes (a lounge). my wife is always trying to get me to change, and when i do i can do it for about 3 days then its back to wierd old me. she doesnt understand and says i make too many excuses.
This isn't an uplifting story. They don't seem happy. They live (essentially) separate lives. Lindsey is stringing him along, and he wants nothing but sex. Most people who watch this video and find it uplifting are incapable of reading the subtle subtext of this so-called "romance".
This is an amazingly beautiful way to look at the Autistic and Asperger's community. It is true that Aspies can find it nearly impossible to make friends. I myself consider it a gift from God that I found a fellow Aspie friend who will listen to me rattle off details of my stories for hours on end and still have a strong interest, or find a girlfriend that is Aspie as well as me. People with the disorder might not be social so much, but we do tend to be very intelligent.
well, i have Asperger's Syndrome myself. not to be nosey or anything, but if they're really a couple who have separate bedrooms (which is shocking to me) do they ever engage in sexual intercourse?
This is truly a rare thing for me to come across as I have never been accepted by the NT or autistic community. Lindsay's dad hammered those words home: high-functioning is almost harder, because the person knows (summing). The need for privacy goes with the territory and needs to be recognized as a medical necessity when considering individual housing or facilitated care needs for autistic people. My problem with sound sensory issues will likely never be resolved.
@autisticaplanet I've tried everything therapeutic that isn't a gimmick. I'll never be able to be around kids or dogs. Not all autism stories have a happy ending. I am glad for these people and hope they do build a life-long relationship. They have 2X the load to carry.
This was a nice story. My husband and I have been together 7 years, married 5 and he was officially diagnosed with aspergers about a year ago. The biggest thing, as the partner of an aspie, is just educating myself as much as possable and being patient with him. There is always hope for love, but in life there are always more failed relationships than successful ones. :)
I'm almost 50 & have been married 20 1/2 years... and only learned that I have Asperger's Syndrome 3 years ago!!! My spouse is very patient and loving! I taught myself many, many things (re; coping/socializing/eye contact etc) before I knew "why I was weird" LoL... finding out sure was an EYE OPENER! ...to say the least.
This is such an uplifting story :) I have never been able to keep a relationship because of my autistic need for regular solitude and space to pursue my interests - and my compulsive behaviours.
It's interesting how this couple have such good eye contact and mutual understanding.

@GaaraBabyEater LOL They probably wrote about their experience and sent it to Glamour magazine, to uplift and encourage other aspies who struggle with love, maybe :)

Doesn't like fluorescent lights, doesn't like the sound of gum smacking or noise, doesn't like uncomfortable temperatures... so they're just like everyone else except they have dorky personalities.
ion010101 8 months ago
@ion010101

MrDirectorMan18 11 months ago
@MrDirectorMan18 more intelligent, they lack brain power in the social side but are more powerful in the other sides, he says "in a way it's atlmost more difficult to be high functioning" and i think ofcourse it is!
secretstream4 11 months ago
@secretstream4 well ive been diagnosed with it and i have an excellent memory but i think at times its a gift and a curse haha.

The way this is presented is so patronising. OMG!! They have Autism and they're in a relationship, who'da thought that could ever happen!!
CuriosityRocks 1 year ago 27
@CuriosityRocks
True in a way, but I think many people with autism (like myself) can relate to the story. It's not big news or anything, just an uplifting and small story on how two socially awkward people come together.

seriously, why does the guy always have to initiate?
initiatorhater0688 1 year ago
@Tipperracinghonda They are NOT in love. One is "in lust" and the other just likes the idea of someone being "in love" with her. I can't understand why you are unable to see this. Watch the video again, more carefully this time.

Oh joy, so people with Asperger's NEVER get married, and when they do, it has to be on the freakin news! Wonderful!

well ur right about them differing, however, both disorders fall in the same spectrum and are VERY alike, thus the reason why some have been misdiagnosed. on top of that, it is known that people with AS marry, bare children, and succeed in life.

So unless there's more to the story either the title is messed up, or the reporters fouled up.
gamelvr1 1 year ago
@gamelvr1 well high functioning autism may pretty much be the same thing as AS
AspiePilo82 1 year ago

-the fact of the matter is: We are lone wolves ment to be on our own
-we are brains, were meant to live on our own, not necessarily on some plain snowy enviroment, but by our selves
-Keep studying keep exercising you look great compared to other aspie chicks!

well, i have Asperger's Syndrome myself. not to be nosey or anything, but if they're really a couple who have separate bedrooms (which is shocking to me) do they ever engage in sexual intercourse?
ttqsg 1 year ago
This is truly a rare thing for me to come across as I have never been accepted by the NT or autistic community. Lindsay's dad hammered those words home: high-functioning is almost harder, because the person knows (summing). The need for privacy goes with the territory and needs to be recognized as a medical necessity when considering individual housing or facilitated care needs for autistic people. My problem with sound sensory issues will likely never be resolved.
autisticaplanet 1 year ago
@autisticaplanet I've tried everything therapeutic that isn't a gimmick. I'll never be able to be around kids or dogs. Not all autism stories have a happy ending. I am glad for these people and hope they do build a life-long relationship. They have 2X the load to carry.
autisticaplanet 1 year ago

Thanks for posting!
