This game look so interesting. But it's so ugly. Why doesn't the creator implement 3d as shown in this video? The complexity of this game, combined with 3d minecraft-like graphic... Hell this game would be No1 in the world.

Some people aren't able to see the simple solutions to reach hard goals.

@VisAbsoluta87 Well, they are multiple reasons. Making the game run dependently off of 3d would cost a ridiculous amount of re-coding. Also I love it like this. Download a tileset if ASCII really bugs you that much. Also, the creator does what he wants. He does not listen to the community. That's good because that's why Minecraft fell into the cracks. He said in some time he might implement isometric graphics but, if you get used to it, you really will not care.

Of course there is nothing wrong about concentrating fully on improving some incredibly complex 'how many % of HP will the lazy dragon lose when it gets hit by a thirsty, but aggressive dwarf' algorithms - You know I really love stuff like this. But what is worth that when there is ZERO point ZERO accessibility? No graphics, no proper interface, no presentation. We're talking about maybe just a half a year of work the GFX/Interface needs to bring that game to a new level ... But you don't care!

I don't know much about the creator but I'm guessing he either wants it to stay rather low key than attract a bunch of attention, or doesn't have the funding. Just a guess though, purely speculation.

lol, after spending about 30 minutes with Dwarf fortress I have concluded: Dwarf mode (the expedition thingy) is frankly ridiculously complexed, adventure mode has hilarious combat (I had both of my arms ripped off by a crocodile after killing it's mother), and having red briefly through the "legends" of my world I lolled at the story of a lazy dragon, a bastard hydra who ate most of the humans and a group of Kobolds who starved to death together in a cave.

In conclusion: Best. Game. Ever.

@yoda56789 it's definitely worth it because its free. its also the most complex game i've ever played. i recommend using mayday tileset if you're interested. i also recommend watching tutorials and lets plays over on youtube and having the dwarfwiki along you when you play.

Its not the graphical rendering thats the problem, its the sheer amount of computations that needs to be done, its a very complex simulation underneath those blocks.

The best graphics card in the world still needs to wait on information on WHAT to render.

@windson7 It's not that weird that he's lagging. It might just be cubes to you, but to a computer 1 cube is 12 triangles. And 12 times a few million is a lot. So just because it doesn't look pretty doesn't mean it's not heavy on a computer.

wrong there buddy. These days render processing is done on the GPU (graphics card). The cpu is utilized for things like logic and physics. That was the main basic goal of the gpu in the first place. So its more:

Graphics = video card.

Physics/Logic = CPU

@windson7 It really does take a lot to run despite the graphical quality, it has to render I run a i7 920, 6gb RAM, 2 ATI5870s crossfire when you get into the bigger populations it uses up alot of your RAM to process the physics and rendering. But I love this game

@windson7 You seem not to understand the massive amount of stuff that is being rendered at once with this app. It's not like 3D games or MMORPGs that limit the render distance, the quality of objects depending on how close they are, etc... It renders everything within the viewing distance all at once, continuously, which causes great strain to even some of the most advanced processors of today.

@windson7 Exactly. The graphics card cuts the cubes into triangles. Two triangles per side. So that would be 12 triangles per cube. There will be a helluva lots of triangles to coordinate for the card.

@windson7 Dwarf Fortress isn't being played in graphical 3D (though the gameplay does take place on multiple z-levels). He is using a third party program which analyzes your map and creates a representation of it.

I don't play roguelikes because of their 2D graphics. I could care less what kind of graphics a game has (so long as it is consistant. A duck is not suddenly a fish unless that's part of gameplay). I'm done talking to you, as you seem fixated on this issue.
