  • Lackluster musicianship.

  • Hi, Mathias! Thans for the song! Giant Steps is a cool thing =)

Did you tune the Stick with unusual way? That's very interesting! You traded places of 1-5 strings with 6-10, didn't you? Is it more easy to play like that? Everybody else usually play standard tuning.

    Thanks!

  • Das ist ganz große Musik von einem Könner. Chapeau.

  • holy fuck , go the trane

  • miiies. mein alter Musiklehrer ;) cool.

  • I am not fan of these weird instruments but i have to say this is good....i am not full of shit like most people. If something is good i can say it doesn't matter if i like it or not.

  • you have your strings switched, niceee :D great to hear that man!

  • what is the difference ( if any) from an electric guitar? frets, pick-ups pre-amp,,amp?

  • Guys like this make me quit trying to be good lol

  • Would someone kindly get me an ice pack for the bruise I got when my jaw hit the floor?

    Bravissimo!!

  • when the walking bass inters.. i'm just like .. what

  • I HEARD SHAWN LANE !

I heard a shawn lane part in there.

  • ich kenn den i-wo her xD

  • Absolutely ridiculous.

  • HEY, is that a parallel fourths tuning on a 10 string stick? never seen that before. whats the range on the bass side?

  • wonderful

  • Fake

  • @captainmikey26 How is it fake?

  • @nowwhatnapster I didn't post that I accidently left myself logged in at a friends house and he posted that

  • putzzzzzzzz!!!!

    que coroa scroto!!!!!

  • i think the hat is the secret to his greatness, dont know how a human could play like that otherwise

  • DUDE!!!

    Your a monster!!

  • sooooooooooooo sick!

  • Great sound! Thanks for posting.

  • What is this guitar called???? what kainna guitar is this??

  • @PawanTandukar its not a guitar its a Chapman Stick and i think this one is a 10 string.

  • you're the man!

  • That is brilliant! Soooo cool!

  • Yes!!!!

  • Oh, absolutely lovely take! :)

  • great mastery of the instrument. I can't even do the bass line on a regular bass never mind the melody. good work. love the hat

  • yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!shock!

  • aweeesoooomeeeeee

  • I'm selling my blue polycarbonate chapman stick.

Don't hesitate to contact me for further details.

  • I'm selling my chapman stick.

Don't hesitate contact me for further details.

  • sounds great sir:)

  • many thanks :)

  • The Chapman Stick wrecked my trousers.

  • he cant do this unless hes wearing that hat ,ive seen him try its awful,,,

  • @firemans33

    LMAO!

well in that case, some one needs to buy him a chin strap for that hat because that was one of the best giants steps covers i heard. who needs a bass & guitar anymore? chapman sticks own! lol.

  • This is what Mr Reverend Billy Gibbons always claims: You can't play blues without a proper blues hat...

I buy your comment totally :-)

  • he dont use the standar tunning of 10 string´s chapman stick... is more like a guitarr and bass mix

  • Amazing,

Someone called this in a jam once and I got lost just playing the bass line for this chord progression. Good job!

  • How the fuck...

  • Stanley Jordan should use a Chapman Stick, it would be so awesome!

  • unbelievable....

  • quite incredible, great job

  • domination

  • I don't know but to me sounds very nice !very hard piece indeed ! God Bless you ! Thanks you for these vids !

  • especially tapping full minor 7th's

  • whoa, my brain explodes just from watching this video, let alone trying to do that. Mad props!

  • That is tough! I love Alphonso Johnson and he plays the Stick and really it is like a keyboard hitting the strings direct. You can use all ten digits and still I guess do double stops and free up another digit to play lines in between! A bass player of mine was interested in the Stick ,today he is an excellent keyboard player. Tapping has it's place and it was mean when he got the vibrato and the bends on the strings- good music!- Fc

  • dang.

  • Hey man, as a bass player you just put me outta work! Fabulous playing, not an easy tune.

  • amasing version

    well done

  • amazing version of a jazz classic! Bravo

  • It looks like you switched the bass and guitar sides around. And do you tune your bass side in fourths?

  • In case you're interested in hearing one of Coltrane's versions, search:

    2kotK9FNEYU

  • Einsame Spitze,

du hast gewiss schon viele Jazzkeller gerockt.

    Fünf Sterne von mir

  • As much as I dislike chapman sticks, it takes an incredible amount of syncopation to get something that sounds remotely like a coherent musical thought. Great job.

  • Why do you dislike sticks?

  • amaaazinggg

  • great !! dear collegue!! big control...very accute work...i have seen your stick with basse down and string melodie up ...it s better like this? the polyphonie? with the hand?

  • I don't care if you have or not technique(because I don't know about it), I don't care if people agree or not with this, I just can say that this has a great job, and if somebody think that it's not just check how this instrument works......it is for crazy people! imagine now puting work Giant steps with it!.....IT IS A LOT OF WORK!

  • God Bless you ! very nice playing ! I love John Coltrane...thanks for posting !

  • Just 10 stars!!

    Sincerely absolutely,

    Boris

  • Fantastic. Anyone know where I can get Chapman Stick tap lessons?

  • Comment removed

  • I love this! Thanks for posting!

  • amazing dude

  • brilliant playing. this is mentally and physically so difficult, and this guy pulls it off beautifully and with great taste.

    essentially like playing a piano

  • interesting, but sounds like a computer or video game, impressive tehcnique though. just not a pleasanty sound imho

  • I disagree. He puts a lot of feeling into it, as well as bieng technically impressive.

  • Personaly I love the tone of a stick. Nothing wrong with a different opinion, but it does suprise me that you feel that way.

  • I have enough trouble comping or soloing on that or "Countdown" independently. I give you a lot of credit for doing both at once!

  • aiiN LeHrer :D:D

  • The Chapmanstick ROCKS!

For another great innovative instrument you have to check RHYTHMTANDEM.

  • sorof sorof ich kann einfach nur sagen respekt aber das instrument so zu beherrschen is einfach genial

Voll krass ^^ mein musiklehrer hat über 54000 klicks bei youtube ich hätte das nie gedacht

  • I know what instrument I'm learning next...

  • Tap step! Giant taps.......great!

  • not my style of music at all.. but I LOVE this O_O

I really like it *taps toes*

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • is he left handed?

  • possibly. Most stick users have the bass strings on top and the melody strings on bottom.

But he is holding the stick like a righty would. I really dont know haha.

  • AWESOME!

  • great!

  • extremely absurd!!! 5 stars

  • not bad

    not bad

  • That. Is. Insane.

    Splendid!

    good job man.

  • woaaaah! cool:D

  • very nice mann!!!!

  • gigantic !!

  • oh god..fingers..!

  • Sehr Gut,ich liebe Coltrane!!

  • this is cool, but the voice sounds a bit squeaky. great coordination.

  • good stuff..respect

  • talk about coordination

  • Wow, Mathias.

  • Ohhh me god

  • Very good !

  • sweet jesus

  • You should do Charles Mingus' "Open Letter To Duke", now THAT would be insane! :D

  • Cool.

  • What a JEFE

  • Nice dude.

  • Holy shit, I play the piano, and since the piano is basically tapping, I should learn how to play the Chapman Stick; Uber Awesome!

  • Wow!

  • Mornic comment; this kicks ass. I doubt you'll ever do anything half as cool.

  • well, if winning a Darwin Award is cool, he might match up to this video. Almost.

  • Considering Giant Steps is one of the hardest songs to improvise over, you dont know fuck all!

  • A left-handed (hehe) Stick. Nice arrangement and playing.

  • No, I don't think it's left-handed. I think the tuning is different than the standard Stick tuning.

  • WOW

  • this song is difficult to play and this guy is playing a walking bass line and soloing, definitely the most amazing thing ive seen played on a chapman stick

  • love it

  • lol...not exactly the kind of instrument you can 'hang back' on...and be lazy...

  • jaaa, das macht mich munter.

    sehr anregend. danke. sehr.

  • HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AMAZING!

  • Phänomenal!

  • awesome playing

  • ngah ngaaaah + drools

  • im digging his hat

  • hey mathias, dank deinem Video werd ich mir jetzt auch so ein Teil kaufen :D danke für die inspiration :D

  • y did u steel my dik

  • hahaha you ass. For some reason I found that funny. Tight video.

  • Hahahaha... same.

Awesome playing. They NEED to produce an affordable budgetline chapman stick, so more people can actually afford it in the first place. I know I can't afford even the cheapest one out right now by a long shot.

  • What do you mean YOUR dick?

  • cool lookin' instrument

  • its cool to play on that, but not to mention the great solo. es ist sehr gut

  • That's not the usual stringing for a Chapman stick, is it? Bass is on the left strings (viewer's right) and regular guitar strings are on the right (viewer's left) with regular strings giving higher notes as you move in. Is that a custom layout?

  • INFO PART 2

The third attribute concerns the tuning of the strings .

The playing direction is "parallel" , not mirrored as in the case of Stick Standard Tuning. The tuning is orientated at traditionally approved tunings.

    - the strings left hand are tuned into fifths as in the case of a cello

    strings 5 - 1 : ,C - ,G - D - A - e

    - the strings for the right hand are into leant against the classical guitar tuning tuned in fourth with the characteristically third strings 10 - 6 : G - c - f - a - d"

  • Thanks for the details. But it's overkill, I'm no musician!

  • Umm... Badass... the stick is awesome. i will have one this summer.

  • you really pull that off man!

  • YES! sketly bop do bop bop shulupady deedly deedly de be do op bop bop.. yeah man! (repeatedly snaps fingers) ^__^

  • great drivin'!

  • ha ha tight as fuck

  • I see you have it strung in an uncrossed fashion, which has always seemed more logical to me, though I've heard the claim that crossed lets you use the thumb better.

In any event, I have a hard enough time just trying to blow through the Giant Steps changes WITHOUT the complication of having to supply my own accompaniment! Nice...

  • Yeah , i think there's a pedal you can buy that will do this , yeah... the Evintide Giant Step..lol

  • i love how people ask how to get one, where they would not be able to play shit so dont even ask

  • damm his brain is totally split in 2

  • where can you get one of these things and how much? awsome vid by the way. 5/5

  • stick dot com

    'bout 2100-2500 dollars

  • ohh my god that is great man good job

  • That is chocking. Congratulations.

  • great playing!...have you got it strung with the bass side strings on the left hand like a normal bass, with melody strings on the right hand strung also like normal intervals of guitar?

  • AWESOME!!!

    Really awesome!

How many strings this instrument has?

    8, 10 or 12?

  • Thanks for compliments - this version of the Stick has 10 strings.

  • Thanks for answering.

You don't need me to say that, but... your two-hands technique are incredibly good!

    Congratulations!

  • excelent solo

  • Too cool for words!

  • i'd never seen a jazz tapping.

    very nice

  • hey mathias, great playing as usual with killing walking basslines and a free solo flight on top...you're one of the few who can do such a thing, congratulations.

thanks for inviting me lastb year to play on your festival. i see that you got a great line up this year, with lampi, pelat, fulara, you and your wife.

  • WONDERFUL .. what a pleasure to find your channel :) .. i'm AFRAID to get a chapman stick .. i might never play guitar again haha .. • Mathias, you're great, as usual!!

One day I will try to switch bass and melody strings in your way.. wish to play better.. (max)

  • Wow! Great playing!

  • Congrats! You're not playing the easiest jazz tune ;-)

Hope to see you again on a seminar!

  • Very nice!

  • hey mathias,

brilliant playing , the only other stickist i know which plays jazz on the stick is steve adelson. you're unique! you really flow!

  • Check out Greg Howard!

  • But he's a jerk off

  • Nice playing Mathias. Nice to hear someone playing the Stick musically on a meaty tune. I should be in Carlsbad Germany in mid-October. If this is near you, let's get together

    Steve Adelson

  • Hut ab !!!!

This is proberbly the best Jazzplaying on Stick I've ever seen. You should do more videos with that style. Nice solo, great chords, top notch walking bass as it should be don when it's real jazz. And you can actuallly define and hear it ;-).
