Gemma Wardle. remember seen (and listen!) her 1997. She makes me favor eponie, genius voice, beautyful acting. It was a great show in the London Palace Theatre, the best i`ve ever seen.
Most of them sound like strangled cats probably the recording quality does not help
Musical theatre singers always sound like this, they have to act as well. However Ma -Anne Dionisio stood out with Francis Rufelle and possibly Jessica Snow-Wilson
I desperately want a copy of Laura Michelle Kelly's On My Own! There are a few people online who have a few different copies, but they've never responded to my emails, so I think they must be out of business with these kind of things. But, does anyone know where I can get a copy? I've been looking for years! I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could help
I have to agree with the comment about Jessica-Snow Wilson's performance. It was one of the first that I ever saw, and would love to her her full rendition of this song again. She still blows me away when I remember it.
I have to agree with the comment about Jessica-Snow Wilson's performance. It was one of the first that I ever saw, and would love to her her full rendition of this song again. She still blows me away when I remember it.
Wow! So many of my fave actresses have played Eponine and done a great job but my favorite Eponine is tied between Sutton Foster and Caroline Sheen!!<3
Woww, they all kind of sound the same on some level, but many do stick out like Frances. I think she has the most distinct voice. I think my favorites will always be her and Celia Keenan-Bolger. Celia isn't the best on on my own, but I think she plays the most accurate Eponine overrall. with the rough edge and spunk she gave her.
Does anyone know where I can hear Laura Michelle Kelly's full version of On My Own? I saw her in Mary Poppins & I love her. I'm interested in how she is as Eponine.
gotta love shanice's "known", so belty yet so effortless, as is she were merely speaking. prob why she added the vocal "break"/crack at the end of "known" to give it the vulnerability/desperation. laura-michelle's is also good for the same reason. Has anyone on here seen Shanice's take on this role live (or better yet have a recording that can be uploaded here)? As lauded as Lea's turn, i hate her "known"-- weak/airy/anti-climactic- as if she wants to amplify but cant, ends up thin/fluffy
I love this! I love so many of these Eponines but Sutton is my all time favorite Eponine!!! I also really like Megan Mcginnis, Lea Salonga, Laura Michele Kelly Meredith Braun, Andera McArdle, Kerry Butler, Ma-Anne Dionsio and Lea Michele! But in my opinion Sutton is the best Eponine!!<3
No doubt, Frances Rufelle is definately the best =) But, they all sing well. How old is Megan Bruno? She looks so young! And on another note- Sarah Uriarte-Berry has been Christine in POTO... I wonder why she wasn't Cosette?
Too bad Linzi Hately is not in here as I would have chosen her on top with Lea Salonga. Credit to Frances for originating Eponine. On My Own is what made LesMiz quite popular. MaAnne Dionisio's rendition is worthy of praise too. Anza Ooyama's emotion is great but her version, and so as the rest of the Japanese Eponines, lacks vibrato. France's original interpretation is more like a depressed Eponine whereas Lea Salonga recreated a different Eponine-a strong-willed, more determined Eponine.
Why are some of them saying "the world" instead of "a world" - I'm angry now...
Also, I can't stand it when they have it transposed down. If you're doing Eponine, learn to belt a C, dammit! Hahahaha - actually the only one consistently singing it down is Frances, but she's the shit so she can do whatever she wants, go Frances!
No. Not for Les Miserables anyway (and it's called the Laurence Olivier awards) she won that and a Tony for Miss Saigon. Frances Rufelle won a tony for playing Eponine. I wouldn't say all of them sound the same, some sound similar, bu a few stick out entirly
it's strange. i can understand why though, sometimes when i sing i accidentally use the and a interchangably, i mean, it's not like it makes a difference, it still means the same thing.
Gemma Wardle will always be my favourite Eponine!!!! She was the first of 10 that I saw! Although.... Frances Ruffelle as the original is also amazing!
My favorites, in the order they appear: Lea Salonga Laura Michelle-Kelly Cassandra Compton Shanice Sarah Uriarte-Berry Kerry Butler Celia Keenan-Bolger (second favorite ever) Megan McGinnis Courtney Wolfson Sutton Foster Ma-Anne Dionisio Melissa Lyons Lea Michele (favorite Eponine of all time) Anne Letscher
lea salonga's easily the best. she's one of the only ones that doesn't sacrifice the fullness of the long 'O' sound in 'known'. almost everybody else is halfway between a short 'O' and long 'O' and as a result it sounds kinda thin.
and, her voice is easily the best, even in the worse '92 broadway clip. they all have good technique, but lea's voice has a fullness, a clarity, a ringing quality, almost like there's bells in her vocal chords.
Lea Michele, Sabrina Aloueche, Frances Ruffelle [just generally], Marissa McGowan, Ma-Anne Dionisio and Dianne Pilkingson are my favorites here. Hehe, yes, I know. Long list.
I'm a bit surprised by the difference of keys on some recordings. Frances Rufelle sings it on 3 different keys. And some others also take it a second higher or lower...
Oh my gosh, Melissa Lyons was the first person taht I ever heard sing this song, and it was almost three years ago now. I haven't heard her since, when she showed up in this video I almost started crying! She's my favorite Eponine, by far! Thank you so much for that audio!!!
also! this really doesnt show cassandra compton..i've seen her twice, and she blew me away! she is truely amazing, and my all time favourite eponine fopr definite!
By the way, I could have showed you where to find a picture of Andrea McArdle onstage as Eponine - and I saw one of Meredith Braun too but can't find it now.
I think my favorites are still what they were in the first version. Lea Michelle's is awesome too! Worst would have to be Melissa Lyons. I like Seiko Niizuma best of the Japanese ones. And I do not like those orchestrations from the Broadway revival, with those horns following the melody. It seems like it restrains the singer somewhat since they have to follow it.
Been to see this show live many times... But none of the others can hold a candle to the performance by Jessica Snow Wilson over twenty years ago...

It makes it difficult to choose a favorite especially when it goes on forever and ever. 1st foreign languages?
2nd repeated singers?
3rd extremely static-y singers?
Those made it hard to decide. I wish they would slow it down a notch. Ex: Samantha barks, Lea salonga

Agree 100% - the new orchestrations ruined many parts in the revival :(
