  • Been to see this show live many times... But none of the others can hold a candle to the performance by Jessica Snow Wilson over twenty years ago...

  • Your video is a favorite on Gabon

  • Your video is a favorite on Mexico

  • Did they add in that orchestration of the horns doubling the vocal line on I HAVE NEVER later on? I don't hear it on the OLC or OBC recordings...

  • Gemma Wardle. remember seen (and listen!) her 1997. She makes me favor eponie, genius voice, beautyful acting. It was a great show in the London Palace Theatre, the best i`ve ever seen.

  • It makes it difficult to choose a favorite especially when it goes on forever and ever. 1st foreign languages?

    2nd repeated singers?

    3rd extremely static-y singers?

Those made it hard to decide. I wish they would slow it down a notch. Ex: Samantha barks, Lea salonga

  • Most of them sound like strangled cats probably the recording quality does not help

Musical theatre singers always sound like this, they have to act as well. However Ma -Anne Dionisio stood out with Francis Rufelle and possibly Jessica Snow-Wilson

  • Where'd did you get the recording of Laura Michelle Kelly?

  • Could you send me a copy of Laura and Caroline?

  • Best:

    Lea Salonga

    Caroline Sheen

    Jessica-Snow Wilson

    Sarah-Uriate Berry

    Celia-Keenan Bolger

    Marissa McGowan

    Sutton Foster

  • Samantha Barks!!!!!!

  • Knoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • You should compare the way they do "pretending"... that varies like CRAZY!!!

  • sutton foster and laura michelle kelly!

  • I really love Anza Ooyama as Eponine, she has a raspier than most other Eponines, but I love her! ANZA ALL THE WAY!!!

  • I desperately want a copy of Laura Michelle Kelly's On My Own! There are a few people online who have a few different copies, but they've never responded to my emails, so I think they must be out of business with these kind of things. But, does anyone know where I can get a copy? I've been looking for years! I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could help

  • I have to agree with the comment about Jessica-Snow Wilson's performance. It was one of the first that I ever saw, and would love to her her full rendition of this song again. She still blows me away when I remember it.

  • Wow! So many of my fave actresses have played Eponine and done a great job but my favorite Eponine is tied between Sutton Foster and Caroline Sheen!!<3

  • CAROLINE SHEEEEEENNN :)))!!!

  • Woww, they all kind of sound the same on some level, but many do stick out like Frances. I think she has the most distinct voice. I think my favorites will always be her and Celia Keenan-Bolger. Celia isn't the best on on my own, but I think she plays the most accurate Eponine overrall. with the rough edge and spunk she gave her.

Does anyone know where I can hear Laura Michelle Kelly's full version of On My Own? I saw her in Mary Poppins & I love her. I'm interested in how she is as Eponine.

  • Celia Keenan-Bolger !

  • Sutton. No question.

  • How did you find the Alex Sharpe version?

  • gotta love shanice's "known", so belty yet so effortless, as is she were merely speaking. prob why she added the vocal "break"/crack at the end of "known" to give it the vulnerability/desperation. laura-michelle's is also good for the same reason. Has anyone on here seen Shanice's take on this role live (or better yet have a recording that can be uploaded here)? As lauded as Lea's turn, i hate her "known"-- weak/airy/anti-climactic- as if she wants to amplify but cant, ends up thin/fluffy

  • I love this! I love so many of these Eponines but Sutton is my all time favorite Eponine!!! I also really like Megan Mcginnis, Lea Salonga, Laura Michele Kelly Meredith Braun, Andera McArdle, Kerry Butler, Ma-Anne Dionsio and Lea Michele! But in my opinion Sutton is the best Eponine!!<3

  • MEREDITH BRAUN!!! FOR SURE!!!!!

  • Holy crap, Frances Ruffelle's 1997 is AMAZING. She really matured to have a lovely voice.

  • how did you find the clip of Alex Sharpe singing this???????

  • Laura Michelle Kelly is pretty damn incredible! damn can she belt!

  • Sarah Berry is amazing! I wish Dawn Younker was on here!

  • Anza Ooyama is my fave! ^_^

  • I saw Les Miz with Jessica-Snow Wilson live (not sure if it was in 2002 or 2003), so I know she's the best. No-one esle gets close.

  • that's slightly biased hahaha.

  • *everything* a person has to say is slightly biased ;-)

no, seriously, she's extremely good. and i know what i'm talking about.

  • lea michele

  • I love Lea Michelle and Lea Solonga and Sutton Foster and Kerry Buttler.

That Francis girl is awful she sounds like she inhailed helium before she sang it.

  • LEA SALONGA LEA SALONGA LEA SALONGA!

  • kerry butler, hands down

  • Where is Bernadette peters?

    Shes amazing!

  • She never played Eponine.

  • No doubt, Frances Rufelle is definately the best =) But, they all sing well. How old is Megan Bruno? She looks so young! And on another note- Sarah Uriarte-Berry has been Christine in POTO... I wonder why she wasn't Cosette?

  • On that note, Meredith Braun has also been a Christine.

  • Too bad Linzi Hately is not in here as I would have chosen her on top with Lea Salonga. Credit to Frances for originating Eponine. On My Own is what made LesMiz quite popular. MaAnne Dionisio's rendition is worthy of praise too. Anza Ooyama's emotion is great but her version, and so as the rest of the Japanese Eponines, lacks vibrato. France's original interpretation is more like a depressed Eponine whereas Lea Salonga recreated a different Eponine-a strong-willed, more determined Eponine.

  • This particular sample is probably not very illustrative, but the most touching Eponine to me is Jessica Snow-Wilson.

I can't believe no one mentioned her, she's simply fantastic.

  • 1. Lea Salonga

    2. Ma-Anne Dionisio

    3. Caroline Sheen

  • Why are some of them saying "the world" instead of "a world" - I'm angry now...

Also, I can't stand it when they have it transposed down. If you're doing Eponine, learn to belt a C, dammit! Hahahaha - actually the only one consistently singing it down is Frances, but she's the shit so she can do whatever she wants, go Frances!

  • When they hold it out for too long, it sounds ridiculous. Frances never held it that long...

  • Lea sounds too angry

  • They are all amazing! I honestly cannot pick my favorite!

  • Lea Salonga and Frances Ruffelle are the best.

  • I mean Lea Salonga

  • Man they almost all sound the same. But who took home the Tony and the British Awards as Eponine? I think it was Lea

  • No. Not for Les Miserables anyway (and it's called the Laurence Olivier awards) she won that and a Tony for Miss Saigon. Frances Rufelle won a tony for playing Eponine. I wouldn't say all of them sound the same, some sound similar, bu a few stick out entirly

  • SUTTON ALL THE WAY!!!!

  • I like lea salonga the best !

  • All is very good!

  • Yeah, I really want Dianne's

  • VERA BOLTEN !

  • I think Lea Salonga is best.. after all the best were in the concert version..

  • She goes into her head voice! Or is it a mix? Either way, it's not a proper belt. So no way.

Frances Ruffelle is my fave Ep, but Sutton Foster's KNOWN just blows me away!

  • i would say mixed. she belts it in the "hey, mr producer!" one. Just type in Hy, Mr. Producer! Les Miserables. Youll see it there.

  • i meant HEY, Mr. Producer!" Les Miserables Sorry.

  • HOLY CRAP. sutton's version basically blew my pants off.

  • @UveBeenLuPwned123094 Mine too! Shes incredible!

  • why do people sometimes say the world that's full of happiness?

  • it's strange. i can understand why though, sometimes when i sing i accidentally use the and a interchangably, i mean, it's not like it makes a difference, it still means the same thing.

  • it amuses me when some of them have to stop for breathers before the known bit ahha.

but yes, Sabrina for the win :)

but Dianne's is quite awesome too.

  • can you please put the full version of laura michelle kelly cos she's amazing and also i love sabrina aloueche's version.

  • lea salonga is the best followed by joanna ampil and ma anne dionesio and all of them are filipina well eponine must be a filipino in her past life.

  • i know natalie toro :)

  • Does anyone know where the full audio of Dianne Pilkington is?

  • Laura Michelle-Kelly and Cassandra Compton

  • This is so funny but an eye opener about the different versions. Thanks. .

  • Lea and Kerry pretty much own this role.

  • Lea Michele!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gemma Wardle will always be my favourite Eponine!!!! She was the first of 10 that I saw! Although.... Frances Ruffelle as the original is also amazing!

  • where can I get the full audio of Laura Michelle Kelly?

  • My favorites, in the order they appear: Lea Salonga Laura Michelle-Kelly Cassandra Compton Shanice Sarah Uriarte-Berry Kerry Butler Celia Keenan-Bolger (second favorite ever) Megan McGinnis Courtney Wolfson Sutton Foster Ma-Anne Dionisio Melissa Lyons Lea Michele (favorite Eponine of all time) Anne Letscher
  • I forgot Gemma Wardle

  • can you post the full audio for Cortney Wolfson? Or point me in the right direction as to where i can find it?

  • lea salonga's easily the best. she's one of the only ones that doesn't sacrifice the fullness of the long 'O' sound in 'known'. almost everybody else is halfway between a short 'O' and long 'O' and as a result it sounds kinda thin.

and, her voice is easily the best, even in the worse '92 broadway clip. they all have good technique, but lea's voice has a fullness, a clarity, a ringing quality, almost like there's bells in her vocal chords.

  • Joanna Ampil is flat... no one else hear that?

  • this audio really doesn't do cassandra compton justice!

  • 1. lea salonga 2. kaho shimada 3. sutton foster 4. frances ruffelle 5. andrea mcardle 6. kerry butler 7. celia keenan bolger 8. ma anne dionisio 9. shanice 10. marissa mcgowan my top ten faves. :)
  • i really do hate frances...

  • o0 why???what has she done?

  • she sang.

  • il ike Celia Keenan-Bolger the most.. she really sounds.. nuts.. and willing to do anything.

  • Debbie Gibson... the best Eponine EVER!

  • lea salonga, lea salonga and lea salonga

  • Lea Salonga and Ma-Anne Dionisio!!!!!

  • I noticed that Lea Salonga's one of the only ones who didnt belt it...and she has the most fans. hmm...

  • o0 she didnt? lol do u know what is belting?

  • Lea Michele, Sabrina Aloueche, Frances Ruffelle [just generally], Marissa McGowan, Ma-Anne Dionisio and Dianne Pilkingson are my favorites here. Hehe, yes, I know. Long list.

  • LEA SALONGA AND LEA SALONGA!

  • GO KAHO SHIMADA!!!

  • I'm a bit surprised by the difference of keys on some recordings. Frances Rufelle sings it on 3 different keys. And some others also take it a second higher or lower...

  • that's just the recordings from being transferd tape to tape so many times in the past.

  • Lea sings KNOWN the best, she sings it correctly and beautifully therefor SHE'S MY FAVE!!!

  • I agree-it's pretty, not strained and shouting.

  • LEA SALONGA all the way!!

  • the filipina eponine's have the best version of this song.ampil, dionesio, nicastro and the legendary lea salonga .maybe eponine is realy a filipino.

  • are all of them from professional shows?

  • yup.

  • frances rufelle, lea salonga, kaho, debbie gibson (not in this recording but i remember seeing her in person a long time ago)

  • I love it!!!!

    But you know?

    Minako Honda.She is Japanese.

    She died.

However, she is a splendid singer.

  • Salonga, Lyons, DeCicco, Ampil and Dionisio

  • For me its Laura Michelle Kelley, then Christina De Cicco and followed by Lea Salonga

  • what about andrea mcardle?

  • she's in this, between Jennifer Naimo and Mindy Smoot.

  • oh i didn't notice sorry.

  • MY favorites are Megan(3:23)I saw her on bway, Kaho Shimada and Lea!!!

  • Laura Michelle-Kelly (1:03) is my number one, followed by Lea Salonga (2:09) and Mindy Smoot (4:18).

  • Christina DeCicco is my number one pick, then Lea Salonga

  • Oh my gosh, Melissa Lyons was the first person taht I ever heard sing this song, and it was almost three years ago now. I haven't heard her since, when she showed up in this video I almost started crying! She's my favorite Eponine, by far! Thank you so much for that audio!!!

  • Anne Letscher is my favourite. She was the one I actually got to see, and I love her version. Would you be able to upload her full song?

  • aesome idea, even better with the diversity of singers :)

  • Yay! It's Anza! My favorite Sailor Moon.

  • Mine too! :)

  • She's second to Miyuki for me.

  • Can you post Melissa Lyons' full version? I'd love to hear more from her.

  • vera bolten <3

  • Believe me, it's not because I love Spring Awakening, but Lea Michele's is the one I felt the most.

  • Wow It is sooo nice.

    But !!!

    You forgot me;-))

Give Antonia Welke in the searchmachin:-)))

    The first song is it.

I m from Germany so thats the german one.

It s the Casting Video ;-)

I hope you like it ;-)))

  • Lea Salonga, Cortney Wolfson, and Sutton Foster are my picks!

  • Lea Salonga (1992), Sabrina Alouche, and Christina DeCicco (saw her in Philly: a BRILLIANT Eppy, both as singer and actor)

  • My favorites are Sabrina Aloueche and Kerry Butler

  • dianne pilkington played eponine AND fantine. go her!

  • so did lea salonga.

  • also! this really doesnt show cassandra compton..i've seen her twice, and she blew me away! she is truely amazing, and my all time favourite eponine fopr definite!

  • frances sounds amazing in 1997! dont like her before then, personally!

  • By the way, I could have showed you where to find a picture of Andrea McArdle onstage as Eponine - and I saw one of Meredith Braun too but can't find it now.

  • I think my favorites are still what they were in the first version. Lea Michelle's is awesome too! Worst would have to be Melissa Lyons. I like Seiko Niizuma best of the Japanese ones. And I do not like those orchestrations from the Broadway revival, with those horns following the melody. It seems like it restrains the singer somewhat since they have to follow it.

  • Agree 100% - the new orchestrations ruined many parts in the revival :(
