  • Can you use this in a high effeciency front loader?

  • Y'all could sure save a lot of work and space if y'all'd grate the soap finer (like Parmesan cheese) and leave out the water. Mix all the dry ingr. dry and just use a table spoon of powder per load.

  • We are now into our 2nd batch.. first went fast as shared with friends & gave howto info +link to here. Yest a friend came over so very happy.. all stains gone from a shirt she was wearing. Great appreciation that you put out this vid - Thanks!

  • hi guys i wanna do this but i dont live in states. so what is "borax" ?

  • Love the video! I think i am going to try this:) Why not just keep the soap in the bucket and put a faucet on it? That way you can just use a cup and not have 20 soap bottles:)

  • Well done howto... thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you so much for this video! I've made my second batch and love it. I have a front loader HE washer and have no issues at all. this recipe is low suds, so it doesn't effect the washer. I kept it at 5 gallons and use 1/4 cup per load. My clothes come out smelling clean and fresh!

  • I completely have that St. Luke's water mug. LOLZ;-)

  • So instead of making 10 gallons and then using one cup per load. Wouldn't it make sense to just keep the 5 gallons, but only use a half cup per load of laundry?

  • Do you think adding essential oils would be okay?? Maybe a drop or three per "divided up container"? Thanks for the video; can't wait to try and share! :D

  • It's water base. Will you need a preservative. What stops fungus, mold, or bacteria from forming?

  • @AnnNoire I'm pretty sure the borax eliminates that...and also filling up the containers fully so there's not much air at the top of your containers.

  • 3 people hate laundry.

  • @TheUrbanFarmingGuys: you guys might also want to Google "Xeros Washing Machine" - it only uses a cup of water and a drop of detergent by using tiny nylon beads to do most of the work! :)

  • awesome. my family is going up to meet you! I would love to also : ) hopefully soon! it's amazing what you're doing : ) yall truly got stuff figured out : )))

  • kewl. i am more interested in the homesteader thing

  • I once used grated soap as laundry soap just as it was when I was poor but this is definitely better.

  • I have two questions if you have time to answer them.

    1. When you make a raw batch, does it have a strong perfume smell to it? I have a problem with scents and allergies so about the only thing I can use it Tide right now.

    2. I am in the South. Mississippi. If I stored this in an OUTside cabinet, would I risk it freezing in the winter?

i asked the 2nd question because I don't have inside storage room for that many bottles and would have to store it outside.

    Thanks and God Bless!

  • Aaannnd now I know why you chose your front porch. On the bright side, my bathroom floor is especially clean today.

  • This works great, i've been useing it for 2 years now and spent about $10

  • You guys should get a siphon instead to transfer it to containers. It' should be much easier.

  • I use these same ingredients only make a powder soap .......takes up less space also I add a few drops of essential oils for a little more fragrance.......these are low sudsing whether liquid or dry so they're great for High Efficiency washers :)

  • i didn't add the 5 gallons of hot water the 2nd day, because i just don't have the room. it's really gloppy, but it seems to work fine. i have to do some more testing, because my husband's gym clothes need intensive cleaning. i used zote soap. we had some waxy substance accumulate on the top while we were melting it. does that happen with fels naptha? i've also heard that you can just grate it and let the soap sit overnight and not even have to heat it for it to dissolve. true?

  • any way we can reduce chemicals in our lives is a good thing.

  • Hi guys! Thank you for great vid! :) Just want to check what is Borax? Is it regular washing powder? Thanks!

  • Will it clog up a high efficiency front loader

  • My wife cut the recipe in half and washed our first batch of cloths with it....... My work uniform and every day cloths were clean and honestly If she had not told me she made the detergent herself I would have never known. Great detergent and thanks for sharing.

  • I used this type of recipe for our laundry soap except we use Ivory. It works great, smells soft and fluffy and is CHEAP! It works, its cheap, its for me :) Great video

  • Just to be clear. Will this recipe work for a HE front loader? Also we make our own cold-processed bar soap, can I just use that or do I need to use one of the bars you mentioned? Love what you are doing. Thanks!

  • That is a great recipe. WOW thanks.

  • My was a cheese like substance after the first night. I had to break it up to continue with the next step.

  • Sweet video, but I don't understand why you would want to add so much water.

  • my wife and I tried it. It works great. I was worried that it would smell funny or not make clothes smell "clean". It smells just like the store bought stuff!

  • Love the video. You guys rock!

  • I've been using this recipe in my front loader for at least 5 years. No problem.

And I don't grate the soap. I just put it in some water and leave it for a few days, stirring every once in a while. It dissolves.

  • fels naptha soap is also great for neutralizing poison ivy, sumac, and oak when it gets on the skin.

Thx. for sharing this great tip! :)

  • yum tastes great!

  • i used to make my laundry soap the same way...a friend suggested leaving the water out and just making powdered laundry soap...works just the same just a little less work...course you probably couldn't use it as a pre-treater without adding some water

  • is this greywater safe? have you looked into soapnuts?

  • you could prolly get a bunch of empty gallon milk containers from any local starbucks or other coffee place..

  • cannot find washing soda. I've been looking for over a year when I came across this same recipe. Doesn't seem like it's a common item sold in stores.

  • @angelbe88

order it from your local Ace hardware store.

If they don't stock it they order it in for you.

You can also get the Fels soap there.

Walmart carries Borax may even carry the washing soda.

  • @1971mgb

Thanks. We do have an ace hardware nearby.

  • thanks for sharing this! i made some and love it. i also found that diluted distilled vinegar makes decent fabric softner. thanks again!

  • Hey what you guys are doing are awesome. I heard of you through Jack Spirkos show the survival podcast. I was wondering if you think you might be interviewed by him sometime soon? Hes been pumping you guys alot on his show. Thanks

  • Greetings from Jefferson City!

  • awesome, stuff that matters!

  • Well I must say, I don't think you can release enough videos fast enough! =)

  • Good thing I have you guys on facebook. This video did not show up on my subscriptions.

  • her tattoos are great!..that yellow just POPS!

  • Like one of the previous comments. Thinking if you use half the water, it would take up less storage space, and use half a cup per load instead. Great idea, thanks for sharing. Can't wait to try it. ;)

  • 2:00 I have that pot!...the one with the glass lid and the insane lid handle that's gets blazing hot but you don't think about it until you touch it because you know that n one would make a pot lid that would burn you if you touched it.

Anyway, that was a fun video - you guys are great together. It looks like a great recipe. In the last two states I've lived in, I've looked in the stores for the fels naptha & the arm & hammer soap but I can never find it : ( Thanks for sharing!

  • I LOVE homemade laundry soap..one could say I am addicted to making it :) I leave it powdered though..great job!!

  • Hmmm... seems like you could use MUCH less water... and leave it more concentrated. If you make, say, 2.5 gallons with the same amount of active ingredients, then you need far fewer containers, and can do a load with a quarter cup of soap instead of a full cup...

  • kickass! ima try it with olivesoap. u guys rock!

  • Is the detergent bio-degradable if we use soap with no Sodium Laurel Sulphates? I wonder if it is safe for grey water systems at all.

  • ok im going to try this ty for the info

  • I don't cook my. It's equal parts baking soda (not washing soda which can be caustic for some rubber hoses in washing machines), Borax 20 Mule team and grated soap. I use the same hypo-allergenic, unscented soap we use to bathe in for this "recipe." I mix it together and use about 1/8 cup per large load. This is in powder form and has worked great for us for almost a year.

  • is your washer he. or will this work with he washers

  • Very cool! I'm switching! Bye bye, Tide!

  • Does it make your clothes smell like wonderful??

  • @UcanbeGOD that is one of our favorite smells that you speak of. You may have to add something to accomplish that. :)

  • not@UcanbeGOD With the money you save after making this DIY detergent, you can buy Bounce Dryer Bars and your laundry will smell like wonderful. I effing love Bounce Dryer Bars since I can just put them in the dryer and forget about them for a few months, and there are always coupons available for them.

  • you can use Zote or Pure white Ivory soap if you can find feils naptha soap in your area. I have been making this and using it over a year now. We love it!

  • Favorited it.

  • Great video. I'll have to try this. Thanks for posting. By the way, love your tattoo. \m/

  • great job, guys. good video and terrific information. thanks! :-)

  • can you half the recipe? I am a single man and 10 gallons would last me a lifetime lo. also can you use any type of hand soap even homemade? and how does it do on stains and grease?

  • does this work for high efficiency machines?

  • Have done this and the dry version before. Very good video. Well explained.

  • I wonder if it would be possible to skip the dilution step, and just use less per wash? I'm really short on space in my laundry and it would be a lot easier to store five gallons than ten. Have you tried this?

  • @SuperWAHM1

I make a concentrated version that ends up being just under 1 gallon. I use 1 bar Fels Naptha, 1 cup Borax, 1 cup Washing Soda. I grate & melt it the same way but only using about 4 cups of water. I put 9 cups of hot tap water into my 1.25 gallon Rubbermaid container that has a large mouth, then pour in the melted soap. I then add my Borax and Washing Soda, stir. I stir often while it's cooling. It helps to keep it mixed. I only use 1-2 tablespoons of the per load.

  • Cheeeeeesy laundry soap! Seriously - the soap looks like cheese! Go Candy! :) Great job!

  • thanks for sharing this

  • Very useful video! Thanks for posting this. I might give it a try...

  • I'd been looking for a good recipe, this is great! I love what ya'll are doing!

  • Nice one! I love frugal living tips.

  • Great info. Thanks

  • You used 10 gallons of laundry soap in two months? That's a load of laundry a day. Use a paint stirrer power drill attachment to mix the buckets.

  • @thanson77 it took us about 8 months to go through 10 gallons. Yes we love power tools

  • Is it low suds, for use in my front loader?

  • @liketadied Yes you can use much less in your front loader. 1/3 cup instead of 1 cup
