Exactly. the bottles have open bottoms and smaller bottles nest inside the larger ones and the shot glasses nest inside the smallest bottles so under each cylinder you have 3 bottles and a shot glass nested inside each other.

Yes I figured it out, the bottles are all hollow, they fit inside eachother and are stacked up inside the tube, see how he pulls the shot glasses out of the bottles at the end

Tommy would only muck up a magic trick deliberately. The last one of the three or four he did always worked. He was an excellent magician and a brilliant comic. Unlike today where most so called comics only get a laugh by being crude and using foul language.

well, the "bottles" were not actually bottles because the bottoms of the bottles were removed so that the bottles could stack like cups but upside-down.

the trick here is to control the bottles in the cylinders.

I agree that Tommy was a genius. But the Multiplying Bottles Routine requires a lot of focus to perform smooth and fast (and a stone-sober magician.) This ones easy, the bottles have the bottom cut off and if you pinch the side of the 'multiplying cups' the bottle grabs the glass.( each cup has a bottle and a glass )

The bottles are only the skins of bottles, with more inside. You can see his fingers holding them up/letting them go when he lifts the tubes.

The clinking only means that they are made of glass.

The 'bottles' stack into eachother just like plastic cups (except these are made to look like just one) and as such the top one can be lifted off from above or the bottom one can be let go of with his index finger while still holding the rest (as you can see his does, his index finger is still holding something when he lets out a bottle).

You can easily see his index finger fidgeting as he grabs the lips and lets go throughout the trick.

If I had to guess, I'd say it could be done using optical illusions to make the glasses look the same size, and only putting real glass on the bottom of a couple of them. For that matter, why not make them all paper and have a fake clinking noise that comes from a few inches away? Or have 4 real glass bottles and the rest paper so people forget which is which? It hardly matters, it's still funny.
