  • thanks a lot for posting this i had a lot of fun decoding all the stations, quite over whemling activity as well.

  • And to add to the reports of successful decoding of the file:

Tried this out with DroidPSK (a new PSK31 app for Android, which has been in desperate need of a PSK31 client for awhile!). Works beautifully :D

  • Just started into this accidently... today. HRD had a version of PSK31 and I didn't recon a sig and tried it and it worked. Field Day with lots of PSK31 activity.

Here is copied sample from your file using HRD:

tnx fer the call the name here is rich and the qth is in the state of pa ur 589 589 so h

    Nice video sample.

  • Also going to use mumble to communicate

Although it seems like it takes more bandwidth for a less efficient communication, it's neat.

  • i think this is amazing

  • wow, there is hours upon hours of fun contained within this single recording. Soooo many conversations, it is amazing. i must get my tech lic. We are using Mumble now. Please join us and try and patch some of this through Mumble for us to listen to. Please!?

Mumble is real easy to download. Then look for the Freemont Calf or the Free calf or the free st louis servers and broadcast there. I made my first psk31 transmission using Mumble to someone hundreds of miles away. I did the auto-CW too!

  • Thanks for the recording. i wish you would make them even longer! I am using Linux Ubuntu and FLDIGI to read this. This is so great. Thanks for the vid. Really fascinating.

  • Thanks for the video. I got Digipan to run under Ubuntu linux through Wine.

It took a while playing with the hardware settings but it worked decoding the video.

I'm looking forward to getting a multi-band HF rig in the future and am going to make an effort to get this running on the 10M radio I have now.

Any suggestions for a decent HF rig in the >$500 range, used obviously.

An older Ten Tec, Kenwood Hybrid, or Icom 7 series, 718, 735?

    Thanks Tom KG4BXN

  • @supertruckertom Tom, I would stay away from ebay. I would only buy a used radio from someone locally, that I can go and see it work. I would get something old that has tubes in it. A nice used Kenwood 570, Icom 718, Yaesu FT-897 would all do you good. Have fun. Thanks for watching.

  • @supertruckertom No need for Wine, my friend, we use FLDIG and it works flawlessly, every single time. Using Mumble as our radio we have sent a fax, a color picture, a b&w picture, bpsk500 chat at high speed, and we are working on sending entire computer files, all using sound, and Mumble as our radio. Mumble is a good place to practice your FLDIGI skills.

  • @supertruckertom what did you use for your hardware settings in ubuntu to decode this?

i just plugged a 3.5mm connector cable from the headphone jack straight into the mic jack

  • are these stations so active now?

  • Thanks Randy, used this video to learn how to receive psk31, and will soon use a signalink usb to receive.

  • Thanks. checking out packet and other digital modes. This helps. kb8mua 2/12/2010

  • Thanks for this great introduction to PSK31.Got it up and runnoring no prob, can't wait to try when i get sorted with a proper setup,Thanks for these videos for novices like me!

  • It is really cool that i can decode all the PSK31 signal in this video just by starting MultiPSK on my computer, it is enough for multiPSk to just catch the sound from the speaker in the same laptop and then decode it.. really cool.. :)

  • @filmkalle yes, have fun and get on the air!

  • If ever there was a perfect example of a true Elmer, you my friend are it. Thanks for your videos.

  • Thanks, as some said a while ago, K7AGE, A Good Elmer!

  • Thanks Randy. I used this sample to verify my software. Its nice to have your vids available for help as I try different modes of operation. 73s KC9KZT

  • I guess even our ham friends need a smoke break "Bruce de VA7GEM VA7GEM

    Take ur time

will go outside 4 a smoke and call when back

    "

  • oh I just found that PSK browser in fldigi program is very useful for this decoding many signals at once :)

  • hey randy I use wireless internet in the shack so my ethernet jack is not used in my radio has two mic jacks in they take the ethernet cable like mic could I plus a enthernet cable from my radio other mic jack to the computer then use psk31 in use a dual ended cable from my radio external output to my computer sound card?? or what can I do thats fairly cheap?

  • Look at the help section in Digipan for interface plans. Randy

  • dammit I could not use digipan to decode this.

  • Click Mode from the menu you want BPSK31, I had mine set wrong like that!

  • thanks randy for all the efffot you put in to your videos this is the best one it got my psk31 running right

  • Fantastic

  • Very cool idea. I found that even at barely audible levels, my computer was able to pick up the signals. This has taught me a lot about PSK31. Thanks!

  • This is seriously very cool. I always wanted to learn about this type of stuff. Now I got digipan working and tried this out, I want to buy some equipment to pick up signals here and transmit stuffs. So cool

  • It is only very cool when you get on the air and make some contacts. Randy

  • Looks like Randy is looking for an appropriate Trash can lid;o) judging by his last remark ;O)

    73s de DL1YAL

  • I just had a smoke and this is freaking me out.

  • BTW I was using gMFSK for Linux to do the decoding.

  • All I have for HF right now is 10 metres, but I am already putting the hardware together so this summer I will give it a shot when the band opens. I was curious on the sensitivity. I mixed Metallica "Sad but True" with this audio sample and was still able to pickout the PSK31 as if the Metallica wasn't even in the background. That and 10*Log10(500 Hz/31 Hz) = 12.06 dB, I'd need 400 Watts on CW to match my 25 Watt Rig with a dipole gain of 1 using PSK31. Am I ever sold on PSK31.

  • Great vid Randy...sure got me hooked :O)

Keep 'em coming. I'm waiting for the day when you work the sats using a trash can lid hi hi.

You seemed to have mastered everything else hi hi

  • you just never know......

  • This video really demonstrated to me PSK31 has given ham radio a much needed boost. With the proliferation of the internet, text messaging, and blackberry's, I had feared ham radio was on the decline. I was able to discern and write down 11 call signs using Digipan with this video. There was a large number of simultaneous QSO's going at once making for quite a pileup. Looking forward to getting back on the air as soon as I finish my antenna project. See you on PSK31! 73's AA7AE

  • This good a great movie about psk operational times, yuo are a A+ plus hobby ham oporator best of luck with your secret noise messages from ham radio times

  • Dear Randy,

Vey well PSK came to my Shack with your video files, thanks for your kind effort

  • Enjoy PSK

  • G'day Randy - I have watched all of your videos and am looking forward to giving PSK31 a go. Something I probably wouldn't have tried if not for your videos. You are good for our hobby!!

  • How strange is this...I waswatching your Ham radio Memories video when you sent me a comment! strange...... 73's

  • I downloaded Digipan like you showed and used your sample recording and it worked! Now i guess i need to get my butt certified so i can use it! hi hi took me about 2 mins to get set up to RX Thnx Randy 73's

  • Very cool! Randy

  • awesome!!!!!

  • Very cool, thanks for posting your series. It has helped me out a lot, and I will be getting on the air soon with PSK31! 73 de N7VOJ John

  • thank you for the vid. This infected me with the virus!!

Looking foward to meet you on psk31.

  • I cheated and routed this to the super-browser in ham radio deluxe ;) So cool.....

  • nice tune to chill..

  • Thanks for putting this up Randy. I've just set up digipan and it looks like a fun mode to use. Am going to watch your videos on setting up interfacing the radio to the computer. Looking forward to playing with this mode when I finally get my IC-7000

  • I got PSK31 to work between two laptops in my house on two Midland GXT850 handheld radios with the VOX function set to level one. With one watt of power it worked very well. I'm pretty dang sure it's not legal to do that on GMRS/FRS frequencies; don't do as I did. ;) Just thought it was cool to give it a shot on walkies.

  • It works. Is it legal??? You can also just use two laptops with just the microphone and speakers using just audio between the two computers. Randy

  • I'm not entirely sure if it illegal on the gmrs/frs frequencies. I would imagine the FCC may not have intended them for such use. Pretty much any audio communication device is capable of transmitting PSK31 and the like. A guy could really even do it over the phone if he so wanted.

  • I tried the sample with a Mac OS X app called MultiMode. With audio loopback software called SoundFlower I was able to decode the PSK31 signal on my mac! Great!

  • cool, Randy

  • Thanks for the sample! It worked really well!

  • Hey Randy thanks for posting this very useful test video. I was at least able to verify my digipan is working on RX. Using Signalink USB with IC-7000 BTW. tuning around 14.070Mhz from my QTH on dec25 I was able to hear no activity. So I will keep on trying.

    73 de KF6NTE,

    --Luis

  • Luis, maybe everyone was playing with their new radios and not on the air. There is usually PSK on 20 during the day. At night drop down to 40, 7,070 and give a listen. Randy

  • I did end up making a ground-wave QSO from somebody a few streets behind my house !. He must have been running high power because the waterfall display would blank out with the exception of his signal as soon as he'd start transmitting. I was careful not to TX at full smoke as you suggest but I had not watched your TX video to know to ask him to give me an IMD report. 73s. Luis

  • You saw the AGC action of your radio. His strong signal caused your RF Gain to be automatically be reduced. This may have been because he was close to you. You will see this action as you watch the waterfall on other stations. Randy

  • yes. that is right. I was monitoring a couple of mexican QSOs in the vicinity and his transmission would blow them away. I think the IC-7000 allows you to set the time constant of the AGC to a particular fixed level as well as to OFF. I believe I had mine set to the shortest setting (Fast).

    Luis

  • Hey Randy thanks for all these helpful videos i think that i will do this when i get my general but right now i am having fun with this and listening to the audio. You helped a ton

    73 and Merry Christmas

  • Randy could you put together a hookup video together for us. I downloaded Ham Radio Deluxe and have an IC706MK2G would love to TX and RX PSK31 from this setup. Stuart VK2LSB

  • Stuart, I don't have either HRD or a 706. I would start with the HRD Help and 796 manual. There may be a HRD forum somewhere that you can find some assistance. Plus if you use some commercial interface, then its manual should show you how to connect the computer to the radio. Randy

  • Cool, you got it working! Randy

  • Randy, you're the best. I am a kinesthetic learner. I've tried to figure out PSK31, and you have just today gotten through my thick noggin. Thanks so much, and see you on the air!

  • It all seems much easier to see it running than just reading about it. Hope you get on the air soon with PSK. Randy

  • Many thanks randy great stuff, Keep it comming joe

  • fantastic video,i can now get psk31 as a swl beginner,thanks...can i do same with rtty?

  • Sure, just search for MMTTY and load in onto your computer. Dig around and set he audio levels about the same way. Read the Help section and you should be able to receive RTTY. Randy

  • Fun! i also decoded in HAM radio deluxe . Several stations from my province of birth British Colombia . Thanks Randy 73 DE VO1GXG

  • Excellent video. Played with Ham Radio Deluxe and decoded a bunch of QSO's. Keep up the great work and put more digital examples up!

    73 de N2NKW

  • Good going. That is what this video is for! There will be a PSK31 Introduction video posted that has instructions for using this video clip with Digipan. Enjoy Randy
