Very beautiful birds. It's sad that European Startling and House sparrow kill this birds. Both European Startling and House Sparrow are invasive species and should be hunted down in America and people should protect all species of Martins and Swallows...

The Purple Martin is slowly recovering from 40 years of the

wrong houses in place in the USA. A sad but true story but

one that made the Aluminum house industry very rich. Today

Martins nest in Starling resistant houses and gourds. Like

the ones seen. Many more are needed they prefer to nest at

Country clubs and Golf Coarse sites. And are very popular

there as they eat bugs that harass the golfers. Many Country clubs across the country host these birds

America loves Purple Martins and thank you BBC for taking the time and money to make this event happen. I live in SW Florida, very near the water and have 14 units which (On agood year) produce 42 young Martins. Owl guards are in place along with snake guards. David, Job well done !!!

i live in the united states illinois

my grandpa has one of the largest colonies of martins in the united states.... already has a bunch back. darn cotton picken hawks keep geting them. we fire at will and shoot them.

Purple martins live in people-built houses because sparrows kill them in their natural nests.

Very tame and lovable song bird they are dolphins of the bird

world. More common in southern states but do nest in the

northern area of the country just not as common. The birds

return for many years to the same house. The aluminum

house industry is to blame for the decline there houses were

only six by six and it retarded the numbers of eggs the females produced. Super gourds have replaces the aluminum houses that were to small.

Starlings kill Martins and House sparrow peck and kill there chicks. Who can not have compassion for a bird who depends on people for a home.....
