While I might agree with you on most 'news' stories being a distraction, this is different. But this isn't Michael Jackson or Anna Nicole Smith. This is a major part of US infrastructure, and more importantly real life human beings. This could have a positive effect. A few people might realize we should be spending money on roads, not bombs and prisons. What would be a more important story? Maybe that we are deliberately killing every day more people than died in this one accident.

just so you know Minnesota gets a large amount of the federal money for roads so the money was their, stop blaming the war for taking money away from it, it is a common practice in most of the united states to wait for a while before actually doing anything about bridges that aren't up to spec, so they were just going by common practice used all around the united states of America. it's a part of our culture not just someone who was trying to siphon money somewhere else
