It's to Labour's shame that they didn't get behind any of the campaigns against the Poll Tax at that time, in fact the parliamentary Labour party were making almost the same noises as the Tories themselves about the protesters and the non-payment campaign. Many activists left the party because of it. However, a great many of the rank and file of the party supported the APTUs that sprang up in every town over the country, even if privately. What a demo that was.
as i stood amongst a peacefull demo outside downing street about 3 to 4 balaclava clad 'heros' started throwing barriers at the police................one caught an innocent young girl on the back of the head...a friend of mine who was near to them and a few other folk waded into them.....then came the police charge!! fact.
People having picnics on the grass opposite downing street were interupted by riot cops on horses. Our peaceful sit down (we were not stood) demo as you say outside downing street was marred by cops hitting us with sticks. Come on the facts get blurred this riot was not the act of a few mindless idiots and you dishonour the brave people who fought against this injustice. The police lost control of London for ten hours that is not four guys balaclavas FACT.
Sorry, but the Iraq war would have been supported by the Tories if they were in power. Stagflation was a global issue, there was little they could have done about it. What this video shows is a stark divide in society which Thatcher's policies created, okay Labour are the Conservatives now, but we havent seen a divide in society like this under this New Labour government. If you vote blue you can be guaranteed division in society if they come into power.
nice to see Tony Benn can still get into an official Labour video! joking aside, I assume that you condem the behavior of the thugs who just went there to riot? I have no problem with peaceful demonstrators but Labour putting this on looks like they don't mind this sort of behavior
There was many videos released in the weeks and months after that showed the police putting agent provocateurs into the crowd. Moments later, these AP's were throwing rocks and barriers at the police, who then started charging the crowd.
The protesters were not thugs. It was the police and the Thatcher government that were thugs, just as they were during the Miner Strike of 84 and the nasty treatment against the Liverpool 47 also during the mid 1980s. If the Tories ever get back in power, it would be too soon. The thing, however, is that I hope that the British Labour Party get its act together and end the Thatcher-lite policies of Blair-Brown, and let's hope to see the return of socialism as the bedrock ideology for Laobur.

Riots happen when this many people come together with a single agenda, there was always going to be violence. Especially near Downing street.
If you didnt want to be part of that you should of stayed away, its common sense.
And what IDIOT would take a child near a potentially violent protest anyway.

Im sorry but what kind of campaigning is this? Because of the mistakes made in the 1990s we shouldnt vote for the Blues?
What about the stagflation in the 70s under labor, what about the Iraq war in 2001 under labor? So who do we vote for then?
This isn't campaigning.
Im voting Blue.
