  • Some of you armchair pundits make me die.

Rapier mk 1 is a 1960's technology final layer area defence weapon designed for the protection of airfields against low flying bomber attacks - cold war thinking.

It was NEVER intended (nor specified) for use as a point defence weapon with look down shoot down capability - exactly what the Army tried to do with it in the Falklands.

JERNAS (Rapier 2000) is an altogether more capable mid-life overhaul using 1990's technology.

  • Having the heavy wet camo on top of the radar dome didn;t help I suppose !

  • this is short range defence missile system and still in use and l love it...

  • Nice

  • Indonesia , Turkey , Iran , Switzerland , Singapore & Australia have been using Rapier for years , but none of them is using the enhanced Jernas system . Why ? Hit probability was not good & not reliable . Poor Malaysia buying such system .

  • AAAA. 111923Z SEPT 2009....Thank you for posting.......AR.

  • AAAA. 111919Z SEPT 2009 Well if this Missle system can track a US B2 Stealth bomber over Farnborough Air display like it did a few years ago...Well it cannot be too bad !!!.......AR.

  • Don't be sorry, he's full of it, Rapier shot down just 3 aircraft in the Falklands.

It was too slow to respond and lacked range.

  • if you need rapier system l thing your country is too close to lost the game, because enemy jets are flying on your head..

  • getting the rapier system was the key but once it was in place

    GAME OVER

  • Actually it was only when these systems were established on shore did the british begin to get air superiority. 42 confirmed kills is a pretty good performance

  • Complete bullshit, Rapier was a near total failure in the Falklands.

In April 1982 T Battery joined 3 Commando Brigade as part of the Falklands Task Force. They landed at San Carlos on 21 May. Early post-war reports were favourable, indicating 14 kills and 6 probables.[2] Later analysis was less rosy, indicating as few as three enemy aircraft were downed.

So 3 isn't quite 42 is it, and in case you want proof refer to Duncan Anderson, The Falklands War 1982, Page 44 (Botley, 2002).

  • sorry you find my comments offensive but i got the information from an article in the times written by Rear Admiral Sandy Woodward so i assumed it to be correct

secondly something kept the argentine airforce out of the air during the last week of the war leading to the surrender on 14th june 1982 as we saw very few jets flying around other than our own

i will get a copy of Andersons book

    Thanks

  • Bob,

If you served in that conflict I retract all of my former comments. You guys did an incredible job down there, but some of the kit you used was not of the same quality as the servicemen who had to use it.

  • we had the best kit available at the time and certainly training on dartmoor helped as the landscape was very similar to the falklands only not as cold

    thanks

  • Nothing wrong with the system - poorly deployed. Initially put on hills but the system can't fire down at jets skimming the water. Led to a modification to give it 10 deg down angle on the beams. As I understand it - the system worked well when deployed correctly.

  • Thanks, that's interesting info on the radar beam.

I still think that one of the biggest drawbacks is the limited range.

  • Yeah rapier is pretty useless, shitty range, warhead, effectiveness. If the Brits didn't have more modern AA missiles, there is a good chance they would've lost that war.

  • @gosciu555 We had Blowpipe & Stinger, too. The Rapier kit actually worked outside its expected capability and rather well once settled in position. The DN180 & DN181 nightfire system was and is still a good AA weapon.

If the Argies knew what they were doing, had knowledge of how to conduct a war and use the kit they had. Unprimed mines, bombs dropped from to low and not arming, and have a look at their toilet habits. Its a wonder they didnt die from dysentry. Very unpro & no organisation.

  • @L33JONNO " Its a wonder they didnt die from dysentry. Very unpro " i will say of course to that, you need a hot weather for dysentry and soldiers were recluted with a 4-6 month training(!),not pro soldiers

  • @L33JONNO There's a reason why the Rapier took time to work.

One of my customers was a tech from BAC back then. They sent him down with spares from Assension Island. He realised they had set them by the book.

He changed Radar setting so the wouldn't clash with the RN ships systems

More important'ly he reset the Gyro's.(Something about the Coriolis effect ,cause of the direction the water swirls down a sink)Default set for Northern Hemisphere. The Falklands is Southern Hemisphere.

    After that :)

  • @TrentVenture wow, thankyou for the information.

  • @bobgladstone "42 confirmed kills " argies never had so many planes,lyer

  • @corporacionmonstruo About 14 kills confirmed I think.
