I've now seen the footage from the train view, and a camera off in the distance. The car was hauling ass and JUST got in front of the train, as you can see. Very unfortunate the recklessness of the driver took 4 other young lives with theirs.
There are some pretty sad examples of humanity posting comments here. 5 young people died in this accident - up to 5 families grieving the loss of a child. Yes, it was due to a stupid decision by the driver, but that does not minimize their loss. There is another video from the engine cab that shows exactly what happened. But I'm wondering why the stopping distance of a train would increase so much with the number of cars as each car has its own brakes that could help dump its own energy. Trains always win. As a Conductor for ConRail we were all tought some simple "Rule of Thumb" math for stopage, it goes like this:
a 3000 lb vehical can stop at about 2.5 ft per MPH (example 2011 Honda Accord 137 ft from 60 mph)
a train stops at about 30 ft per car, per MPH (40 car Train doing 60 MPH 72,000ft or 13.6 MILES to come to a stop)
So no, Trains that see you stalled on the tracks waving from your car are not going to stop, it's to late.
