  • inspiring piece

  • this guy is my idol this the reason why i want to make music

  • This is how good arts coverage is in Europue...can you EVER imagine a 7 minute feature on Madlib on British TV?! Hell no. Maybe if he did a collab with Simon Cowell...

  • making music in his bedroom, damn, much respect.

  • wats the name of the song in the beggining

  • @DELUXX420

  • This video is an inspiration! Gotta go make beats again. brb..

  • madlib an dillist da illest

  • dude from Lootpack works in a sports store. But yet, he still makes music.

    He seems content.

But yeah,... anyway,... Madlib knows that those Jay-Z cats are controlled by the mainstream beast. He doesn't want anything to do with that.

  • Stonesthrow = Madlib.

If I'm making beats and I get bored I make more beats.

  • at 5:08... whats that sonG?? i flipped the SAME sample, its on my page, called "Televisual Hypnosis" but whats HIS sonG called?-Elbee

  • Madlib has a monotone voice like Guru they sound alike cool

  • madlib gives me inspiration and drive to do my own stuff!

  • is that a "la planete sauvage" decoration on the wall at 1:46. madlib tends to use alain goraguer samples in his music, so i wouldn't be surprised lol.

  • If Madlib went mainstream, peoples fucking heads would explode

  • Lol the last reply is classic

  • madlib is lost in the music. and i say that with all due respect. peace

  • a Jaylib 2!?!?!?!?! shame we're never going to hear it.

  • PB Wolf is THE MAN!

  • Their vinyl weigh a ton.

  • sports zone doesnt even exist anymore. lol

  • Is Madlib left handed?

  • madlib is like GOD to my eyes...this was a sick documentary...just wish it in english lol

  • The Unseen still sounds so fresh today. It's one of my favourites, pure genious!

  • Madlib is a genuis! rip dilla

  • This is one of the most consistent producers out. Always putting out GOOD music.

  • Jaylib 2... :(

    R.I.P. Dilla

  • liddl brür, oh no !

  • my god the volume is low on this. is there anywhere else i can see it?

  • um...how bout turning up the volume?

  • of course, why didnt i think of that???

haha naw bro, my shits up all the way, this video is EXTRA quiet

  • madlib will always stay real!!!!

  • 4 eva undaground madlib !!!

i will always stay real, keep it underground, bumping shit and smoke some stuff

    peace

  • mad lib its on same boat as we are, jump off and se whats happening...

  • i always wondered how much underground artists make. I know the big name cats are getting bread guys like doom and madlib. They work with a lot of mainstream artists so i know they getting paid but what about the other ones?

  • for real.

  • bedroom music!

  • See how quick he responded when they asked him about breakin into the mainstream... "NO!"

  • @ANT8U think youre exaggerating

  • @ANT8U at what time does he say that?

  • i wanna hear that madlib and roy ayers collab

  • madlib! blunted nappy head, always keepin it real

  • I wanna be like be like Madlib when I grow up. Our philosophies are so much the same.

  • Name some.

  • His laid back approach, mainly. He isn't a lot about self promotion and trying to take over the industry. I make beats too and if I could be like any producer I would want to be like Madlib in that regard. I would want to make some money but just enough to not have to worry about it and focus on music. Also, it seems he wants to expand his ability to make music by any means necessary, whether it be sampling some relatively obscure piece of music or actually learning to play the instruments.

  • u my friend have got this

  • @bigd23608 do try to be like someone else cause when you do that you loose that special thing thats inside us all so just be yourself ya know

  • @bigd23608 LOL

  • Madlib lives good now everybody take note thats an artist.

  • Marcell2aG; only difference nobody heard of u

  • This is the TRUE spirit of Hip Hop.

Keepin the music flowin, not matter how much money is in possession.

That's why Madlib is my favorite producer, he reminds me a lot of myself.

  • I recently stopped using Fruity Loops so Im looking for a different set up. Which MPC or SP would be recommended for a first time user and what other equipment should I get (speakers, mixers, etc)?

  • you should probably go with either the mpc 1000 or the 2500

  • Thanks but whats the difference between the two and which one has the better sound?

  • buy a 4000

  • some people that i know that think that the big name rappers and producers are it. i let them listen to people like dilla and madlib and they are blown away by it. and it proves just becuase you have your tracks up on the Billboard charts doesnt mean youre the best. stones throw always signs and backs some of the most original artist out there. people that have a true passion for the music not the money and fame. and i cant wait till the next madlib alblum drops.

  • madlib is so fucking cool

  • when he said the new quasimoto album is done, was he talkin bout the further adventures? or another new one??

  • @ 5:07 that song is Quasimoto - fatbacks

  • love that song...."like my asses fat, not flat!"

  • fuckin Madlib keeping it real

  • this people are very special

  • the real SOUL stands up

    <3

  • "I had this bag of shrooms..."

    haha

  • I was supposed to go up against him in a beat battle in 02 but he had something else going on and had to cancel. I ended up winning but I was looking forward to going up against him I've always respected what he does.

  • hahaha i didnt know little anthony was goanna be in this. man i love madlib and all of his work, hah i was super stoked to see some relatives on this. Dope.

  • yaaaa madlib i love all your work

  • any translations of this? dope but i dont speak norwegian.

  • well... alot to translate. but things thats not said in english is mainly:

Stonesthrow started in 1996, madlib started making music in the basent of butter's basement.

Madlib dident realy know how how to play instruments before he started there.

most of the dont earn enuff to live of it, but madlib does now. and thats about the "improtant" info u needed =)

lots of luv from the Norwegian guy and big fan of Stonesthrow

madlib lives 1 houre away from the studio.

  • yea tis out its called "blunted int eh bombshelter" dope smokin music!

  • Loves this brother real creative none of this sell out shit DONT SELL YOUR SOUL MDL BE YOUR SELF 1

  • magic

  • at 1:09 how come the beat ''go f/guilty simpson'' was there at 2006?

  • he is talking about an oldschool reggea album, is it in stores now?

  • it must be the mixtape "Blunted in the bombshelter mix" made with tracks from the Trojan catalogue and which was released in 2002 .

  • oh really? where could you find it or is it like somethin madlib wont give away.

  • in any good record store.(I bought it in France)

  • is there ever going to be the release of jaylib2??? keep the real hip hop music comming!!

  • j-dillas death makes that unlikely.

  • hAhA, what's the program of the tiny-ass national broadcasting-channel from my tiny-ass country, Norway, doing on stonesthrow's channel? Funny. Even in norwegian and stuff. We feeling ya out here in Norway though, stonesthrow! Keep it tight. one Love

  • remember that photo of J Dilla with a drum set ? 3:18

  • real hip hop.

  • OxCity!!

  • Hell yeah madlib...always keepin' it real

  • Blunted in a bomb shelter was great.

  • i havent seen this documentary in years.....but yeah 4ourMat if he;s gonna make Jaylib 2 most likely its gonna be a Madlib Remix

  • Sweet can't wait for it... If it gets releases AT ALL.

  • Wait, Jaylib 2? That's gonna be interesting.

  • the thing is, i been listening to dee since before 2000 (and i'm young tho...not an old head or whatever)....its a shame that he had to die before every cat started to appreciate him...but on the plus side his music is reaching the world

same with madlib, i used to listen to lootpack not considering madlib too much..slum village too.

nobody knows how many of their fav hip-hop tracks were produced by dee

not so much fav...but you wouldnt even really guess cuz he was under the radar sorta

  • someone get this guy a medal!

  • i hope these dudes know how much they are appreciated. it's tough being an uncomprimising musician trying to make a living. all your hard work is inspiring a lot of people...hope you read this...one.

  • yeah i know what you're saying.

i like the original work murs did.

    look up the song "ninefive"

most people havent even heard this shit.

  • Eat a dick.....Dilla is dope.Murs Is dope.

    fuck all of y'all.

  • this was a norwigian program. madlib sick...

  • Listen carefully for the beat beginning at :58.

That sounds just like the beat from that new Wigflip joint, "Go," with Guilty Simpson.

  • Haha, it IS the beat from Go! Nice catch

  • haha its crazy to think a lot of his 'new shit' is actually old.

  • 4:40...that mural is at my church. lol

  • Madlib does it BETTER than anyone else...Dilla did it better than anyone else. Madlib is carrying the torch. Otis is doing it NOW.

  • when are the new madvillian 2, blue note 2, and ynq albums comin out???????

  • You never know with Madlib, i mean he is releasing jazz ep/lps all the time but some stuff seems never to see the light, may be he was talking about Yesterdays Universe(released in 07) that interview is from 06.

  • yea man, i just made a playlist of my fav. madlib joints-244 songs! i got plenty of material to listen to but im just craving more..madlib is the man!

  • over 200 songs? thats fucking awesome

  • Stones Throw = Best Label Eva

  • malib is the fucking shit ya heard!

  • man he should keep his hair like that always

  • anyone know what mixer he is using?

  • now how many producers do you see with a double bass?? not many, alot of producers are bitch made.

Madvillainy 2= a reason to live

  • I heard that.

  • Jay Dee had a one string upright bass as well, don't get it, i mean yes the D definietly fits the hip hop soundrange the best but why not even have atleast the A on...

  • but maybe he was sitting in madlibs studio on that photo(with madlibs bass in the bg)

  • just because you see it, don't mean he uses it.

  • I like what he said at the end of the interview. Now that's a true artist!

  • you can see em passin a blunt hahah

  • madlib is the shit...

  • for madvillainy 2 i'm interested in hearin some reverse shit....some metal fingers strictly while lord quas tears it up. i guess they'd have to switch they collabo name up or whatever

    The Metal Moto (Motto)...lol....or somethin

  • good thought

  • Exactly! The comment @ 7:08 is one of the reasons I like Stones Throw and underground music. Everybody wants to be a mainstream artist like Jay-Z and Diddy cause of money and fame. These Stones Throw artists don't care about money, fame or major record labels, just the music.

    ~Ryde4Life

  • Stones Throw is one of the most legit labels out there. not concerned with dough therefore they just bring it real

  • ok madlib is my mothafuckin man. hopefully him and the new generation of kids can learn from him. smoke some weed. get inspired. and make hot shit. cause thats what its all about in my opinion, without the music. life would suck alot more ass. trust me. mad props to madlib for opening minds. he definitely got me into alot of other music besides his. good music that is. so mad props. and fuck kanye west. the fuck you talkin about. the bitch sampled curtis mayfield move on up. thats fucked up

  • i agree. like totally

  • Madlib (peanut butter, doom, dilla, all the instrumental support)... you are legends. for anyone else feeling the bluenote work he did (jazz/hip-hop cross-over), check

    Soweto Kinch.

he is upcoming UK MC/Jazz artist/Producer...

  • Madvillain 2? Hoooo boy that is reason to get excited.

  • mdvillain is releasing a second album?

  • yes sir

  • Madvillian 2! word! that was an awesome album! Madlib, you are on fire! Big up Yo self

  • hey dont quote me or anything....but i swear i read somewhere kanye giving dilla props for helping him out with his production. I dunno...all though i dont really pay much attention to the mainstreem, i have a quiet respect for people like kanye and lupe fiasco, i mean yes its mainstreem and all that shit but good on them for makin the mainstreem withough being the tired gansta or bling poppy shit.

  • ok, people please shutup , do not bring up Kanye West's name. That guy is a commercial freak. Just a product of good marketing. J Dilla and Madlib, don't really care about the mainstream , but I bet you any day, that both of them would have been highly regarded, well they are anyways lol, even without the mainstream

  • Man I used to wonder what was up with madlib and why everyone was crazy over him....hes style is so differant its definitly not something you can just pick up. Now i gotta say he and Dilla are 2 of the best producers in hiphop.

  • I have to agree with you ...madlib and Dilla are the best producer in hip hop

  • Don't forget Dilla passed away 2 years ago, he sitll lives on though!

  • Malib has his own style...Malib is a classic..now Kanye West has his own style very commerial and that is ok.. but I think Malib is a classic because he has 8 arms he is a octopus he do 8 things at one time. Malib do Reggie,Instruments, break beats, jazz techino,Dj,Mc,and a producer and more...as far as Kanye he is a very very good producer but Kanye is not a 8 arms man but he make good fuckin beats

  • response to "thefreehuey"...of course kayne is ripping off dilla-that's a known fact dude....problem is kayne will never be that diry, authenic, and raw...

  • Madlib a funny nigga. .everytime I see him he lookin high..and thats a good thing for me keep ya head up! n get that gold

  • 00.33 - 00.57

Madlib started as rapper and producer to the underground heros Lootpack. But he has been more of a weak secret over time. The last years it been thrown out records from his studio, in Los Angeles. From great hip-hop records to fine jazz and reggae projects. He got much of the honor, that Stones Throw Records got so big respect by music lovers. And he got no plans to slow down the production.

  • 01.41 - 01.53

Earlier Madlib worked from a studio at the crazy record collector Peanut Butter Wolfs house, in the studio well known as "the bomb-shelter". PBW is the founder and boss of Stones Throw Records, who gives out Madlib and many others artists from Cali.

  • 02.40 - 03.00

When PBW and rapper Charizma had been on a major label for three years, without no record out. Did PBW decide to start his own label(Stones Throw). Stones Throw was founded in 1996, and newly had their 100 publishing. They got more and more attention, much because of the creative force of Madlib.

  • 03.32 - 03.45

Madlib created a jazz quintet all alone, the group Yesterday's New Quintet appear as a full band, where all the members even give out solo albums. But actually everybody is one man.

  • 04.09 - 04.23

The album that made many people take a extra look at Madlib and Stones Throw was the jazzy "Quasimoto - The Unseen". But it was never supposed to get out.

    05.15 - 05.28

One hour north from Los Angeles, is Oxnard. Hometown of Madlib, here also many of the other Stones Throw artists live. Like Oh No(Madlib's brother) and the old partners from Lootpack.

  • 06.08 - 06.15

Stones Throw gives much freedom, but not so much money. As an example, is Dj Romes studio, a room in his mom's house.

    06.48 - 06.55

Madlib has now began to live of his music, and makes beats to big artists like De La Soul, Common and Busta.

  • can somebody sub this?

  • I want to know if people are going to agree with what I am going to say. Do you any of you get the feeling sometimes those sax, strings, congos, and bass bits you hear in Kanye's music are written by someone else and Kanye just produces the sound quality but gets credit for their creativity? He's not exactly something of a musician. I apologize if I seem like I'm hating, but that's what I've been getting latey. Also, his music lately has something of a J Dilla type quality.

  • i have a feeling most of those pieces and cuts are just samples? im not hatin on it i just dont if Kanye is a profound musician like madlib?

  • kanye is his own in some odd way. black milk is a replica of dilla. listen to ruff draft by dilla then listen to black milks popular demand. he uses some of the same samples and reconstructs the same beats just differnt tone.

  • Why is are you even bringing Kanye into this..?

Of course he has influence from Dilla, but to go on like his totally biting or not even relly mkaing beats..where is your proof..??

He has his own style I can hear a Kanye beat & know it came from him...

  • Amazing that nrk actually made a big time quality documentary about hip hop. Great!

  • Helt enig

    Astral Blaaaak...

  • MADLIB the chillest motherfunker on the planet
