The reason why more people died in sri lanka is that ocean didnt recede like in thailand and there was no waves the ocean tide just rose and just flooded inland like torrent of water ,tsunami are not alway big waves they can be 2 feet tall but the speed and volume of the water can still kill u and tsunami have many charactisticts like they can apear has wave breaking in the horizon then forming bore that just floods that floods inland or they can appear more like rising tide like in sri lanka

But you know what, I might have done the same thing. Where I live we can't even imagine how earthquakes feel or tsunamis... So, let's take an advice and follow local people or animals next time when this happens and not running when it's too late.

But not always water disappears - this is the nagative wave = the water dispappears and then a large water wall comes back. On the other hand where the positive wave occurs, not the negative one, you cannot predict when or where the wave wall comes, you even don't know a big wave is coming to you, because the sea is the same as ever. It's a horrible surprise.

@KDGOnline Tsunamis arent so uch waves as they are moving waters.... Haha an earthqauke in the ocean causes un upset in water levels so basically the ocean becomes a river. But I think the video labelled "Incredible tsunami footage" by oldboy11x is the best view of the actual wave head on.
